Book excerpt: A semiotic analysis is made of the six major plays by Eugene O'Neill and an attempt is made to yield a systematic analysis towards humanistic interpretations of texts. Theoretical interpretations are enriched with discussions of the plays. Technical matters such as the segmentation of the text are specified in appendices. Six semiotic dimensions have been studied: motifs, theatrical semiotic systems, their use in communicational functions, role function of the dramatis personae, their levels of awareness, and aristotelian divisions.

Book Synopsis On the Medieval Theory of Signs by : Umberto Eco
Download or read book On the Medieval Theory of Signs written by Umberto Eco and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the long debate on the nature and the classification of signs, from Boethius to Ockham, there are at least three lines of thought: the Stoic heritage, that influences Augustine, Abelard, Francis Bacon; the Aristotelian tradition, stemming from the commentaries on De Interpretatione; the discussion of the grammarians, from Priscian to the Modistae. Modern interpreters are frequently misled by the fact that the various authors regularly used the same terms. Such a homogeneous terminology, however, covers profound theoretical differences. The aim of these essays is to show that the medieval theory of signs does not represent a unique body of semiotic notions: there are diverse and frequently alternative semiotic theories. This book thus represents an attempt to encourage further research on the still unrecognized variety of the semiotic approaches offered by the medieval philosophies of language.

Book Synopsis Distance Manipulation by : Joanna Kot
Download or read book Distance Manipulation written by Joanna Kot and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century, there appeared in the Western world a stream of literary and dramatic works that confused their audiences to an unprecedented degree. Many of these works continue to confuse to this day and are avoided by theatre managers wishing to fill seats. Choosing for analysis a selection of five early-twentieth-century Russian plays, this book examines in detail the techniques, devices, and elements that the playwrights applied in order to undercut the traditional dramatic and theatrical expectations of their audiences. Kot studies experimental dramas by Gippius, Sologub, Blok, and Ivanov, but the centerpiece of the book is Chekhov's Cherry Orchard his last and greatest play. Kot argues that it presents a subtle balance of distancing and emotive techniques. An invaluable guide to the often bewildering nature of so-called "innovative" twentieth-century works, this book will appeal to anyone interested in modern theater.

Book Synopsis Songs of American Experience by : Marc Maufort
Download or read book Songs of American Experience written by Marc Maufort and published by New York : P. Lang Pub.. This book was released on 1990 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative literature study examines Eugene O'Neill's long neglected link with the 19th century American literary tradition. It is the first scholarly work to focus exclusively on O'Neill's kinship with novelist Herman Melville. Thus, it sheds new light on aspects of O'Neill's craftsmanship that had hitherto been considered through a European looking-glass. With Melville, the playwright shared a satirical view of American Puritanism. Like the author of Moby Dick, he developed an intensely personal concept of tragedy and was fascinated by the sea. In other words, both writers attempted, through a strikingly similar sense of vision, to define the reality with which their contemporaries were confronted and thus to create compelling songs of American experience.

Book Synopsis Struggle, Defeat or Rebirth by : Thierry Dubost
Download or read book Struggle, Defeat or Rebirth written by Thierry Dubost and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-10-27 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Eugene O'Neill, the links between man and his surroundings were of prime importance. His characters struggled with existential problems, and how they related to them reveals much about O'Neill's own humanity. For the most part, the characters defeat their problems and in doing so are "reborn" in some manner. This work examines the 49 plays that O'Neill completed, focusing on his attempt to find an inner truth in his characters. Part One explores the family, showing how a person is trapped by heredity, space, time and communal hierarchy. Part Two deals with the individual and society, showing how societal conventions confined the characters. In Part Three, personal freedom is the centerpiece, showing how the characters develop a specific approach to life that leads to a coherent vision of the characters' relationships with the world around them.
