Book excerpt: This invaluable volume collects papers written by many of the world's top experts on L-functions. It not only covers a wide range of topics from algebraic and analytic number theories, automorphic forms, to geometry and mathematical physics, but also treats the theory as a whole. The contributions reflect the latest, most advanced and most important aspects of L-functions. In particular, it contains Hida's lecture notes at the conference and at the Eigenvariety semester in Harvard University and Weng's detailed account of his works on high rank zeta functions and non-abelian L-functions.

Bao and Z. Shen. The editors of this volume have provided comprehensive and informative "capsules" of presentations and technical reports. This was facilitated by classifying the papers into the following 6 separate sections - 3 of which are applied and 3 are pure: * Finsler Geometry over the reals * Complex Finsler geometry * Generalized Finsler metrics * Applications to biology, engineering, and physics * Applications to control theory * Applications to relativistic field theory Each section contains a preface that provides a coherent overview of the topic and includes an outline of the current directions of research and new perspectives. A short list of open problems concludes each contributed paper. A number of photos are featured in the volumes, for example, that of Finsler. In addition, conference participants are also highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume develops the depth and breadth of the mathematics underlying the construction and analysis of Hadamard matrices, and their use in the construction of combinatorial designs. At the same time, it pursues current research in their numerous applications in security and cryptography, quantum information, and communications. Bridges among diverse mathematical threads and extensive applications make this an invaluable source for understanding both the current state of the art and future directions. The existence of Hadamard matrices remains one of the most challenging open questions in combinatorics. Substantial progress on their existence has resulted from advances in algebraic design theory using deep connections with linear algebra, abstract algebra, finite geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. Hadamard matrices arise in a very diverse set of applications. Starting with applications in experimental design theory and the theory of error-correcting codes, they have found unexpected and important applications in cryptography, quantum information theory, communications, and networking.

This book was released on 2008-08-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large amount of the capacity of today’s computers is used for computations that can be described as computations involving real numbers. In this book, the focus is on a problem arising particularly in real number computations: the problem of veri?edor reliablecomputations. Since real numbersare objects c- taining an in?nite amount of information, they cannot be represented precisely on a computer. This leads to the well-known problems caused by unveri?ed - plementations of real number algorithms using ?nite precision. While this is t- ditionally seen to be a problem in numerical mathematics, there are also several scienti?c communities in computer science that are dealing with this problem. This book is a follow-up of the Dagstuhl Seminar 06021 on “Reliable Imp- mentation of Real Number Algorithms: Theory and Practice,” which took place January 8–13, 2006. It was intended to stimulate an exchange of ideas between the di?erent communities that deal with the problem of reliable implementation of real number algorithms either from a theoretical or from a practical point of view. Forty-eight researchers from many di?erent countries and many di?erent disciplines gathered in the castle of Dagstuhl to exchange views and ideas, in a relaxed atmosphere. The program consisted of 35 talks of 30 minutes each, and of three evening sessions with additional presentations and discussions. There were also lively discussions about di?erent theoretical models and practical - proaches for reliable real number computations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Diamond are examples of wide-bandgap semiconductors having chemical, electrical and optical properties which make them very attractive for the fabrication of high-power and high-frequency electronic devices, as well as of light-emitters and sensors which have to operate under harsh conditions. The book comprises the proceedings of the 5th edition of the European Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials, held from the 31st August to the 4th September 2004 in Bologna, Italy. This conference series here continued its tradition of being the main European forum for exchanging results, and discussing progress, between those university and industry researchers who are most active in the fields of SiC and related materials. Attendees at the conference highlighted the progress made in material growth technology, characterization of material properties and technological processing for electronic applications. Many electronics devices were presented: including high-voltage, high power-density and high-temperature components; as well as microwave components. Radiation-hard sensors were also presented. These proceedings fully document the latest experimental and theoretical understanding of the growth of bulk and epitaxial layers, the properties of the resultant materials, the development of suitable processes and of electronic devices that can best exploit and benefit from the outstanding physical properties that are offered by wide-bandgap materials.
