Book excerpt: This volume presents the non-linear theory of electrostatic focusing of an electron beam split into bunches under conditions when the plasma permittivity at the modulation frequency is negative and the effective Coulomb force acting on the electron bunches is reversed. Conditions for the spatial equilibrium between the bunch and plasma emission, as well as the dynamics of the formation of focussed bunches, are confirmed by solving (both analytically and numerically) the self-consistent set of equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown that the fields generated by relativistic electron (positron) bunches moving in overdense cold plasma have two components -- wake and Coulomb. The existence of the Coulomb component is caused by the absence of the Debay screening of the charge moving in plasma with the velocity greater than the thermal velocity of the plasma electrons. It is shown that at some conditions the contribution of the Coulomb component to focusing and self-focusing of the electron (positron) bunches, and wake field generation could be essential. This conclusion is valid for different descriptions of cold plasma-relativistic electron bunch system.

Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An envelope equation is derived which describes the radial evolution of a radiation beam propagating through a plasma. The radiation envelope equation contains a defocusing term due to diffraction spreading and a focusing term due to relativistic oscillations of the plasma electrons. The case of a constant density background plasma is analyzed in detail and an expression for a critical laser power is derived. For powers exceeding the critical power the radiation envelope oscillators and does not diffract. Under certain conditions, the radiation beam propagates through the plasma with a constant radius envelope. Keywords: Self focusing; Laser plasma interactions; Radiation propagation; Envelope equation; Relativistic plasma.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the non-linear theory of the collective interaction between a modulated beam of relativistic charged particles and narrow electromagnetic and Langmuir wave packets in plasma or gas slow-wave systems. Regular oscillations excited by a relativistic beam under the conditions of Cherenkov resonance and the anomalous Doppler effect can be used to generate coherent microwave radiation and accelerate charged particles in plasma.

Book excerpt: This document is the final report on a project to study focusing effects of relativistic beams of electrons and positrons interacting with a cold plasma. The authors consider three different models for the overdense cold plasma - electron bunch interaction. They look at coulomb effects, wakefield effects, bunch parameters, and the effects of trains of pulses on focusing properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis covers the few-cycle laser-driven acceleration of electrons in a laser-generated plasma. This process, known as laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), relies on strongly driven plasma waves for the generation of accelerating gradients in the vicinity of several 100 GV/m, a value four orders of magnitude larger than that attainable by conventional accelerators. This thesis demonstrates that laser pulses with an ultrashort duration of 8 fs and a peak power of 6 TW allow the production of electron energies up to 50 MeV via LWFA. The special properties of laser accelerated electron pulses, namely the ultrashort pulse duration, the high brilliance, and the high charge density, open up new possibilities in many applications of these electron beams.

Book excerpt: Recent advancements in generation of intense X-ray laser ultrashort pulses open opportunities for particle acceleration in solid-state plasmas. Wakefield acceleration in crystals or carbon nanotubes shows promise of unmatched ultra-high accelerating gradients and possibility to shape the future of high energy physics colliders. This book summarizes the discussions of the 'Workshop on Beam Acceleration in Crystals and Nanostructures' (Fermilab, June 24-25 , 2019), presents next steps in theory and modeling and outlines major physics and technology challenges toward proof-of-principle demonstration experiments.
