Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a Catholic priest who died a failure become one of the world's greatest poets? Discover in his own words the struggle for faith that gave birth to some of the best spiritual poetry of all time. Gerard Manley Hopkins deserves his place among the greatest poets in the English language. He ranks seventh among the most frequently reprinted English-language poets, surpassed only by Shakespeare, Donne, Blake, Dickinson, Yeats, and Wordsworth. Yet when the English Jesuit priest died of typhoid fever at age forty-four, he considered his life a failure. He never would have suspected that his poems, which would not be published for another twenty-nine years, would eventually change the course of modern poetry and influence such poets as W. H. Auden, Dylan Thomas, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, Geoffrey Hill, and Seamus Heaney. Like his contemporaries Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, Hopkins revolutionized poetic language. And yet we love Hopkins not only for his literary genius but for the hard-won faith that finds expression in his verse. Who else has captured the thunderous voice of God and the grandeur of his creation on the written page as Hopkins has? Seamlessly weaving together selections from Hopkins's poems, letters, journals, and sermons, Peggy Ellsberg lets the poet tell the story of a life-long struggle with faith that gave birth to some of the best poetry of all time. Even readers who spurn religious language will find in Hopkins a refreshing, liberating way to see God's hand at work in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned Hopkins expert Joseph J. Feeney, SJ, offers a fresh take on Gerard Manley Hopkins which shakes our understanding of his poetry and his life and points towards the next phase in Hopkins studies. While affirming the received view of Hopkins as a major poet of nature, religion, and psychology, Feeney finds a pervasive, rarely noticed playfulness by employing both the theory of play and close reading of his texts. This new Hopkins lived a playful life from childhood till death as a student who loved puns and jokes and wrote parodies, comic verse, and satires; as a Jesuit who played and organized games and had "a gift for mimicry;" and most significantly, as a poet and prose stylist who rewards readers with unexpected displays of whimsy and incongruity, even, strikingly, in "The Wreck of the Deutschland," "The Windhover," and the "Terrible Sonnets." Feeney convincingly argues that Hopkins's distinctive playfulness is inextricably bound to his sense of fun, his creativity, his style, and his competitiveness with other poets. In unexpected images, quirky metaphors, strange perspectives, puns, coinages, twisted syntax, wordmusic, and sprung rhythm, we see his playful streak burst forth to adorn those works critics consider his most brilliant. No one who absorbs this book's radical readings will ever see and hear Hopkins's poetry and prose quite the way they used to.

Book excerpt: "This volume, the latest in Oxford's edition of The Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, presents Hopkins at his most private and self-considering: there are mundane memoranda about neckties to purchase or letters to write, but also exacting revisions of poems. There are entries of quiet rapture, his attention caught by the unexpected sight of a bluebell or 'some delicate flying shafted ashes...between which the sun sent straight bright slenderish panes of silver sunbeams down the slant towards the eye.' Paintings, sculptures, and works of literature are stringently assessed, his aesthetic principles freely exercised. There are also nightmares relived; undergraduate 'sins' unsparingly recorded; 'signs' of heavenly mercy carefully noted; small acts of 'kindness' from others, both unexpected and restorative, gratefully acknowledged. Like most diarists, Hopkins was committed to life-writing practices not simply to itemize his daily activities, but to explore the possibilities of textual 'selving.' The space of the page was the opportunity, incitement, and necessity of reporting what had been seen, what had been felt, what had been feared, in order both to memorialize the experiences and to make possible subsequent re-readings. Thus, the diaries and notebooks are a summary of the present and an investment in-even a prediction of-future responses. The entries extend from September 1863, during his second term at Oxford, until February 1875, while studying theology as a Jesuit in his beloved Wales, and from February 1884 until July 1885, while Hopkins was living at a 'third remove' in Dublin, Ireland as a Classics Professor at University College and Fellow of the Royal University of Ireland."--

Book excerpt: Hopkins's 'Dublin Notebook' provides intimate and rare access to the Jesuit poet's private, poetic, religious, and academic thoughts and words during his final years in Dublin. In February 1884, Hopkins moved to Dublin from England to become a Professor of Classics at University College (entrusted to the Jesuits in 1883) and a Fellow at the recently-established Royal University of Ireland, an examining institution. He lived at UC's St. Stephen's Green campus until 8 June 1889, when he died of typhoid. The 'Dublin Notebook' is a unique repository of personal memoranda, drafts of poems, lecture outlines, spiritual meditation notes, and academic notes, and sheds new light on the circumstances that produced Hopkins's 'Sonnets of Desolation' in the mid-1880s. The contents include pages in which he tallied examination marks and commented on students' performances; intermittent musical jottings; lists of correspondents to whom he owed letters; attendance records; drafts of a short biography for publication; a commentary on Cicero; and preliminary versions of 'Sibyl's Leaves', one of his most exceptional poems. This edition, Volume VII in the Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, provides readers with a digitized facsimile of the manuscript, a detailed transcription of each page, and scholarly resources such as a historical and cultural introduction to Hopkins's Dublin years; an analysis of the notebook's contents; the editors' explanation of the manuscript and its challenges; translations of and citations for all classical quotations; and thorough annotations (including transcriptions of his musical compositions). Other resources include a Biographical Register; documents related to Hopkins's academic appointments; sample examinations that he set for the Royal University; and edited versions of his study of Cicero's 'On Duty' and his biographical notice of Richard Watson Dixion, the Pre-Raphaelite poet. The 'Dublin Notebook' sheds new light on Hopkins's life and inner torments, his wide-ranging artistic talents (and musical aspirations), his involvement in Ireland's vexed 'troubles' in the late nineteenth century, his harrowing spiritual and emotional condition, and the busy life of a burdened Classics professor.

However, during his lifetime he was known not as a poet but as a Jesuit priest, and his faith was essential to his work. His writings combine an intense feeling for nature with an ecstatic awareness of its divine origins, most remarkably expressed in his magnificent and highly original 'sprung rhythm.' This collection contains not only all of Hopkins’ significant poetry, but also selections from his journals, sermons, and letters, all chosen for their spiritual guidance and insight. Hopkins didn't allow the publication of most of his poems during his lifetime, so his genius was not appreciated until after his death. Now, more than a hundred years later, his words are still a source of inspiration and sheer infectious joy in the radiance of God's creation.

Book excerpt: In his poetry Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 89) sought to discover afresh the potentialities of language, and to that end developed his idiosyncratic theories of instress, inscape and sprung rhythm. Hopkins's verse is also informed by his religious beliefs; having converted to the Roman Catholic Church in 1866, he became a Jesuit priest eleven years later. However, his poetry is free from a sense of religious dogma, and instead offers a whole hearted involvement with all aspects of life, a love of nature and a search for a unifying sacramental view of creation. His best known poems include 'The Wreck of the Deutschland', 'The Windhover', 'Pied Beauty', 'Spring and Fall', 'Carrion Comfort' and 'Harry Ploughman'.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966. In his lifetime, Gerard Manley Hopkins was known as a poet only by a small circle of his friends. More than any other major Victorian writer, he was recovered and presented as a poet to modern readers by editors and scholars of the first half of the twentieth century. This book analyzes how and to what extent the presuppositions of these critics have dictated the modern conception of Hopkins's work. Bender seeks to dispel, once and for all, the notion that Hopkins was a naïf poet. He provides an analysis of classical Greek and Latin rhetoric relative to the classical background of Hopkins's style and the structure in his poetry. He maintains that especially in Hopkins's more extreme work, such as "The Wreck of the Deutschland," there are precedents for the structure of the poem itself, the structure of the sentences within the poem, and its sensual and obscure imagery in the classical literature that Hopkins knew so well. Bender's study suggests two highly controversial positons: first, that although Hopkins is one of the most original voices in English, his poetry is within a tradition insufficiently recognized by modern critics; and second, that the effect of careful and sympathetic study of classical literature can induce quite the opposite of a neoclassical style in English.
