Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Poems of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley When we read a play or a story poem we do not usually concern ourselves about the writer unless he is an actor in his own story.' But when we read a lyric (i.a. A song poem), or an ode or elegy we usually gain more or less insight into the mind and emotions of the poet. It matters little that we know only a few facts about Shakespeare, but we want to know as much as possible about Keats and Shelley and the times in which they lived, for these two poets write very largely about themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Keats The present volume has been carefully prepared, in the case of poems published during Keats' lifetime, from the author's own text. The posthumous pieces included are edited from the best sources. I have endeavoured to give the whole of the Poet's work of real value, excepting a few fine pieces which are still copyright. "Endymion" has not, previously, been adequately represented in selection. This position of the volume will, I doubt not, be acceptable to many who have neither the time nor the inclination to read that Poem in its entirety. Book excerpt: Keats was a well known poet of the English romantic period, and despite his death at the tender age of 25, is one of the most widely read authors of the era. The Complete Poetical Works and Letters of John Keats contains all of John Keats published poetry as well as an extensive selection of personal letters written by the author. The book opens with a brief biographical sketch written by editor Horace E. Scudder. From there, this book is all Keats'. The poems are presented chronologically according to the date they were written, and are loosely organized into the categories of early poems, the poems of 1818-1819, and supplementary verse. In all, more than 100 poems written by Keats are included. The section of personal letters is even more extensive, featuring more than 200 letters, also authored by Keats. These letters vary in tone and content, but help the reader to form their own biographical sketch of the man. The real highlight of The Complete Poetical Works and Letters of John Keats is of course the author's poetry. John Keats was preternaturally gifted in the art of verse, and it is astonishing that he was able to compose such beautiful lines at such a young age. His odes are some of the most powerful poetry ever written by an English poet, and have stood the test of time well. Indeed, read today, these poems feel as fresh as the day they were written. The Complete Poetical Works and Letters of John Keats is a standout book for one reason - the wonderful poems of John Keats. Those who are unfamiliar with the poet owe it to themselves to read his work, and those who are fans of Mr. Keats will relish the opportunity to add his work to their collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Keats: A Study Oh, what a wild and harmonised tune My spirit struck from all the beautiful. - Endymion. In all true poetry there is an element of prophecy, an inner vision, the scope of which is not, and ought not to be, comprehended at once. The real harmony which will make the poetry of John Keats lasting is to be found in prophetic element. For a work of genius is the expression of a mind at its greatest, a mind no longer limited and fettered with its own. individuality, but free and great by reason of its union with general life. It is the voice of the many in one, of the one in many, and such a voice must by its very nature be prophetic. Some chance sight or sound has wrapt him away from the young greenness of the May morning, and plunged him deep into the Opulent colour of September. His prophetic eye sees all the apple-buds as golden orbs of fruit, and the swallows, that now build beneath the eaves, making ready for their departure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of John Keats The same feeling as prompted the arrangement of the text has induced me to place the notes at the end of the. Volume, rather than, as would perhaps have been more convenient, at the bottom of the page. Here are the poems, wrote Keats, in despatching to his brother in America some of his latest com positions, they will explain themselves - as all poetry should do, without any comment and though notes may sometimes add to our knowledge in such a way that we return to the text with a fuller appreciation and a wider power of sympathy, for once that they are consulted the poems will be read many times, and in moods - those moods, indeed, in which poetry makes its surest appeal - when all explanatory comments are a source of weariness and imitation. The notes are both textual and illus trative. The record of textual variations makes no pretence at being exhaustive for a complete account of the different forms through which the poems passed before Keats left them Mr. Forman's edition will always remain the exact and unim peachable authority, and it would. Have been wholly unnecessary, even if the material at my disposal had made it possible, for me to attempt again what has already been so admirably done. I have been content, therefore, with recording those variants which are especially interesting in the light they throw upon the poet's powers of self-criticism, and upon the gradual. Growth, as it were, of a work of art to the form in which the artist thought fit to give it to the world. However, the first version of the. Ode to a Nightingak, which has come to light since the publication of Mr. Forman's edition, is given in every detail. The earlier drafts of the poems of Keats are of particular value in that he had no opportunities, as, e.g., had Wordsworth or Tennyson, to revise his work after its first publication. But the main object of the. Notes, introduction, and ap pendices is to discuss and illustrate the relation of Keats with his predecessors, and to establish the sources of his inspiration. The subject is one of special interest and special importance to a study of Keats, and much has from time to time been written incidentally upon it; but it has never, I think, been treated systematically in all its bearings upon the spirit of his work and upon its subject matter, style, and vocabulary. Yet such a study; as -it' seems to me, affords one of the surest methods by which we may come to understand that essential element of original P genius by virtue of which Keats is among the very greatest of our poets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When I say this book is a love story, I mean it is about things that cannot be gotten over—like this world, and some of the people in it.” In 1819, the poet John Keats wrote six poems that would become known as the Great Odes. Some of them—“Ode to a Nightingale,” “To Autumn”—are among the most celebrated poems in the English language. Anahid Nersessian here collects and elucidates each of the odes and offers a meditative, personal essay in response to each, revealing why these poems still have so much to say to us, especially in a time of ongoing political crisis. Her Keats is an unflinching antagonist of modern life—of capitalism, of the British Empire, of the destruction of the planet—as well as a passionate idealist for whom every poem is a love poem. The book emerges from Nersessian’s lifelong attachment to Keats’s poetry; but more, it “is a love story: between me and Keats, and not just Keats.” Drawing on experiences from her own life, Nersessian celebrates Keats even as she grieves him and counts her own losses—and Nersessian, like Keats, has a passionate awareness of the reality of human suffering, but also a willingness to explore the possibility that the world, at least, could still be saved. Intimate and speculative, this brilliant mix of the poetic and the personal will find its home among the numerous fans of Keats’s enduring work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Stroll With Keats I Stood tiptoe upon a little hill, The air was cooling, and so very still, That the sweet buds which with a modest pride Pull droopingly, in slanting curve aside, Their scanty-leaved and finely-tapering stems, Had not yet lost the starry diadems Caught from the early sobbing of the morn. The clouds were pure and white as flocks new-shorn, And fresh from the clear brook; sweetly they slept On the blue hills of heaven, and then there crept A little noiseless noise among the leaves, Born of the very sigh that silence heaves; For not the faintest motion could be seen Of all the shades that slanted o'er the green. There was wide wandering for the greediest eye. To peer about upon variety; Far around the horizon's crystal air to skim, And trace the dwindled edgings of its brim; To picture out the quaint and curious bending Of a fresh woodland alley never-ending; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
