Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his arrival in Britain in the 1950s and involvement in the New Left, to founding the field of cultural studies and examining race and identity in the 1990s and early 2000s, Stuart Hall has been central to shaping many of the cultural and political debates of our time. Essential Essays—a landmark two-volume set—brings together Stuart Hall's most influential and foundational works. Spanning the whole of his career, these volumes reflect the breadth and depth of his intellectual and political projects while demonstrating their continued vitality and importance. Volume 1: Foundations of Cultural Studies focuses on the first half of Hall's career, when he wrestled with questions of culture, class, representation, and politics. This volume's stand-out essays include his field-defining “Cultural Studies and Its Theoretical Legacies"; the prescient “The Great Moving Right Show,” which first identified the emergent mode of authoritarian populism in British politics; and “Encoding and Decoding in the Television Discourse,” one of his most influential pieces of media criticism. As a whole, Volume 1 provides a panoramic view of Hall's fundamental contributions to cultural studies.

Book Synopsis The Collected Writings of Murray Stein by : Murray Stein
Download or read book The Collected Writings of Murray Stein written by Murray Stein and published by . This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Murray Stein's prolific career has produced a substantial body of writings, lectures, and interviews. His writings, captured in these volumes, span a wide domain of topics that include writings on Christianity, Individuation, Mid-life, the practice of Analytical Psychology, and topics in contemporary society. His deep understanding of Analytical Psychology is much more than an academic discourse, but rather a deeply personal study of Jung that spans nearly half a century. The unifying theme of the papers collected in this volume is the individuation process as outlined by C.G. Jung and adopted and extended by later generations of scholars and psychoanalysts working in the field of analytical psychology. Individuation is a major contribution to developmental psychology and encompasses the entire lifetime no matter its duration. The unique feature of this notion of human development is that it includes spiritual as well as psychosocial features. The essays in this volume explain and expand on Jung's fundamental contributions.

Book Synopsis Out of Order, Out of Sight by : Adrian Piper
Download or read book Out of Order, Out of Sight written by Adrian Piper and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1999-01 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrian Piper joins the ranks of writer-artists who have provided much of the basic and most reliable literature on modern and contemporary art. Out of Order, Out of Sight is an artistic and intellectual autobiography and an (occasionally scathing) commentary on mainstream art, art criticism, and American culture of the last twenty-five years. Piper is an internationally recognized conceptual artist and the only African American in the early conceptual art movement of the 1960s. The writings in Out of Order, Out of Sight trace the development of her thinking about her artwork and the art world, and her evolving awareness of herself as a creative, racial, and gendered subject situated in an often limiting and always absurd cultural and social context.
Book Synopsis Intermedia, Fluxus and the Something Else Press: Selected Writings by Dick Higgins by : Dick Higgins
Download or read book Intermedia, Fluxus and the Something Else Press: Selected Writings by Dick Higgins written by Dick Higgins and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dick Higgins and his Something Else Press epitomized the riotous art of the '60s There are few art-world figures as influential--and as little known--as Dick Higgins (1938-98), cofounder of Fluxus, "polyartist," poet, scholar, theorist, composer, performer and, not least, the publisher of the legendary Something Else Press. In 1965 he restored the term "intermedia" to the English language, giving it new dimension to recognize the dissolution of boundaries between traditional modes of art-making and the open field for new forms that cannot be compartmentalized. His own contributions to intermedia are many--as a participant and instigator of happenings, as writer and composer straddling traditional and vanguard forms, among others--but it was Something Else Press (1963-74) that redefined how "the book" could inhabit that energized, in-between space. Something Else Press was as much a critical statement and radical experiment as it was a collection of books by some of the most luminary artists and writers of the 20th century: Gertrude Stein, John Cage, Ray Johnson, Dieter Roth, Bern Porter, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Emmett Williams, Robert Filliou, and George Brecht, among many others. Along with his Great Bear Pamphlet series and the Something Else newsletter, Higgins exploited and subverted conventional book production and marketing strategies to get unconventional and avant-garde works into the hands of new and often unsuspecting readers. Edited by Granary Books publisher Steve Clay and Fluxus artist Ken Friedman, this judiciously curated and indispensable compendium of essays, theoretical writings and narrative prose dives deep into the ever-influential ideas that Higgins explored in theory and practice. Clay and Friedman have chosen works that illuminate Higgins' voracious intellectual appetite, encyclopedic body of knowledge and playful yet rigorous experimentation in a selection that includes many writings long out of print or difficult to find.

Book Synopsis Selected Writings of Alonzo T. Jones by : Alonzo T. Jones
Download or read book Selected Writings of Alonzo T. Jones written by Alonzo T. Jones and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume 1 of 4 contains some ten books, eleven sermons/lectures, and five pamphlets-over 800,000 words. There are nearly 7,000,000 recorded words of A. T. Jones available to us. In choosing the material for the planned four volumes, consideration was given to the tendency of placing one's most important material in the most permanent form-books and pamphlets. Thus, the four volumes will contain largely books and pamphlets, plus all of the recorded General Conference sermons, and some selected journal articles. A few booklets and pamphlets that are duplicated in the retained publications are not included. The four "Empire Series" books, - The Empires of the Bible, The Great Empires of Prophecy, Ecclesiastical Empire, and The Great Nations of Today-begin at the Tower of Babel, and cover the history of the world. Jones, Alonzo Trevier (1850-1923) -. Editor, author, preacher. Jones became an SDA in 1874 while in the Army at Fort Walla Walla. He soon became involved in evangelism in the Northwest. He was called in 1885 to assist with periodical editorial work at the Pacific Press, where Ellet J. Waggoner was also working as editor. Jones' knowledge of history enabled him quickly to become the church's expert on the fulfillment of prophecy in the realm of religious liberty. With Waggoner, he pushed the frontiers of understanding the righteousness of Christ in relation to liberty and salvation. May of 1888 Senator Blair brought a national Sunday bill to the U. S. Senate, with Jones appearing later that year before a Senate committee to oppose that legislation on behalf of the church, the first of many testimonies he would give in those settings. The 1888 General Conference Session brought to a head the differences between some leaders and Jones and Waggoner. The issues were prophecy and salvation. Ellen White endorsed the urgency of the crisis in relation to religious liberty and prophecy highlighted by Jones. She later would call the salvation message Jones and Waggoner were presenting "most precious" and prophesied against those who called them "fanatics, extremists, and enthusiasts" (1888 1336.2 & 1341.2). Next to Ellen White, Jones is undoubtedly the most prolific writer the SDA denomination has ever had. Over the years, he did editorial work for a number of our publications. In 1897 he became editor of the Review and Herald for a few years. Ellen White repeatedly, at least through 1899, spoke of Jones as a messenger of God with a special work to do (1888 1455.2), and warned of the "fatal delusion" of rejecting the message, especially if either Waggoner or Jones were to lose their way (1888 1455.2). As the church entered into the period when it would "remain here in this world because of insubordination many more years" (Lt 184, 1901), Jones departed from church membership, but remained active in publishing the last 20 years of his life, and kept the Sabbath until his death in 1923. - Adapted from the Adventist Pioneer Library Publications Included In Vol 1. 1888 The Abiding Sabbath & The Lord's Day 1889 Kansas Camp-meeting Sermons 1889 National Reform is Church and State 1889 The National Sunday Law 1889 Religion and the Public Schools 1889 Rev.
