Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Trees and Shrubs Evaluated for Single-Row Windbreaks in the Central Great Plains States Forestry Project immediately after the Dust Bowl Days of the 1980's were 10 rows wide. About 50 percent were 5 to 7 rows wide and the remaining 10 percent were either 3, 4, 11, or 21 rows wide Such wide barriers are effective but they waste valuable cropland. Ideally, a single row of trees or shrubs that attain substantial and uniform height in a short time, retain branches to the ground and provide sufficient year-round density would use the least land and be most desirable. Seed zones are needed for many species because of the genetic variation associated with their geographic distribution. Zone boundaries may be delineated from experimental data that identify genetic variation, or by analysis of the environmental factors that most likely acted as selective forces in creating such genotypic variation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Shrubs The cultivation of shrubs and trees is a very simple matter, and the principal details can be readily mastered by those who have an elementary knowledge of garden ing. Unless the circumstances are quite exceptional and the nursery is within a few miles of the garden, plants of medium size should be preferred to those that have attained to large dimensions. The latter are costly be cause of the large amount expended in labour upon their preparation by the nurseryman, and they are much more difficult to establish. Sometimes with considerable care they die in the summer after they are planted. In other cases they are so slow in becoming established that they make but little growth for two or three years and when they readily take to their new quarters, it is not unusual for them to be overtaken by plants several years younger at the time of planting. Speaking in a general way, the plants offered at the usual catalogue price are the best, having regard to their cost and the rapidity with which, under ordinary care, they become established and fill the positions assigned them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."
