The first table is a collection of miscellaneous prices that could not properly be included under any other head, and of scraps of information found among the papers at Brandsby Hall and Castle Howard. Some of the entries are remarkable. The very modest prices paid for the keep of the racehorse, and for the services of the jockey, form a startling contrast to the fee paid for teaching Mr. Mitford the not very difficult art of shaving. Nor can the school fees at Douay be con sidered high; fencing and dancing seem the only sub jects taught, and a considerable proportion of the total is spent on amusements. The year 1 782 was one of agricultural depression, and it is the only occasion on which, so far as I have been able to tell, the rents were reduced or abated. Although the books at Brandsby Hall do not show how much was paid per acre, it is evident that the rents had been very much raised in the previous twenty years. This increase was partly due to immigration from the Netherlands and France, partly to the growth of domestic industries, especially cloth-weaving, but most of all to the settle ment and occupation of the counties north of the Trent. At the time of the Revolution, as we can see from the returns of the Hearth Tax, the northern counties were nearly as fully peopled as the southern, certain differ ences of soil and climate being taken into account. These counties were especially, though not wholly, the seats of the new manufactures. In the seventeenth century, too, other manufactures than those of textile fabrics made considerable progress. Paper, glass and iron were increasingly produced in England, apparently of excellent quality, and chiefly in the South of England paper in Kent, glass and iron in Sussex. It is to this century jalso that the art of smelting iron by pit-cod is assigned. There is evidence that this process was known a century before, but it may well have been improved by Dud Dudley, its reputed inventor.
