Download or read book School Education in India written by Manish Jain and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines how the public and private domains in school education in India are informed and mediated by current market realities. It moves beyond the simplistic dichotomy of pro-state versus promarket factors that define most current debates in the formulations of educational reform agendas to underline how they need to be interpreted in the larger context. The chapters in the volume present a series of conceptual and empirical investigations to understand the growth of private schools in India; investigate the largely uncontested claims made by the private sector regarding provision of superior quality of education; and their ability to address the educational needs of the poor. Further, the book looks at how the private–public dichotomy has been extended to professional identity of teachers and teaching practices as well. Rich in primary data and supported by detailed case studies, this volume will be of interest to teachers, scholars and researchers dealing with education, educational policy, school education and public policy. It will also interest policy makers, think tanks and civil society organisations.

Book Synopsis Early Childhood Education and School Readiness in India by : Venita Kaul
Download or read book Early Childhood Education and School Readiness in India written by Venita Kaul and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a comprehensive assessment of the status and quality of early educational experiences at preschool and early primary grades in India. It raises a serious concern that despite high enrolment in preschools, children’s school readiness levels remain low at ages five and six, and raises a vital question---are Indian children getting a sound foundation for school and for later life? It addresses three important issues from the Indian perspective: children's school readiness at age five; families' readiness for school; and, most importantly, the readiness of schools for children. India is one of many countries across the global South facing an early learning crisis. High quality early childhood education may be key to improving these outcomes for children, yet little is known about early childhood education programs in India and their impact on children’s school readiness. This volume is based on a longitudinal, mixed methods research study which is perhaps the first of its kind in India. The study covers public provisions along with steadily expanding private pre-schools and schools in rural India and provides interesting narratives and insights into the multiple pathways children are adopting in these critical early years, particularly in the context of the expanding role of the private sector. Written in a lucid and narrative style, this volume is of interest to a diverse readership of researchers, educationists and early childhood education policy makers and practitioners in terms of both its design and findings.

Book Synopsis Education and Development in India by : Jandhyala B.G. Tilak
Download or read book Education and Development in India written by Jandhyala B.G. Tilak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on empirical, interdisciplinary research, this book presents a critical review of some of the major issues that are of interest to researchers, policymakers and planners in developing as well as advanced countries, including specifically in India. It provides an in-depth review of some of the major development policy issues in education in general, and in India in particular, over the past 2-3 decades. Besides presenting an overview of the educational developments in India that reflects issues such as growth, equity, efficiency, foreign aid, decentralization, center-state relations, financing, and cost recovery, the book puts forward in-depth analyses of education poverty, interrelations between education and poverty, low level of outcomes in elementary education, effects of structural adjustment policies and approaches on education, south-south cooperation, etc. It also critically discusses changes in policies relating to financing higher education, external assistance for education, and how the growth of private higher education is affecting society at large. The dichotomy between public policy and action is also highlighted in many chapters. On the whole, while the importance of education is being increasingly recognized, the state does not seem to be as willing to foot the bill for education as the households and even the private sector. Occasionally contrasting with international evidence on, for example, financing higher education, private higher education, or the effects of neo-liberal policies, the book offers an interesting read for a wider audience.

Book Synopsis The Progress of Education in India by : Vani Kant Borooah
Download or read book The Progress of Education in India written by Vani Kant Borooah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book quantitatively analyses data to demonstrate India's recent progress in the education sector. India, as one of the world's fastest growing economies, currently enjoys what is termed a 'demographic dividend' meaning that, compared to most other countries, it has a relatively young working age population. In order to exploit this advantage, the author argues that India needs to make this young population economically productive through education. The chapters in the book address whether India has succeeded in doing so, both in terms of numbers educated and the quality of their education. The author draws on specialist surveys conducted by India's National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in 2008 and 2014 which examine the state of education in India.
Download or read book Education in Asia written by Jee-Peng Tan and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data analyzed in this study are drawn from varied sources including documents provided by governments in the context of the World Bank's operational activity. The data on a basic set of indicators were assembled for a core of 11 Asian countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand). Data for other Asian countries are also presented when available. After an overview, chapter 2 highlights the main features of education in Asia in an international and regional perspective. Chapter 3 provides more detailed documentation of education costs and financing arrangements in Asian countries, focusing on such items as the pattern and level of unit costs across levels of education, the distribution of public spending, and the contribution of private financing. Efficiency and equity are addressed in chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 6 offers conclusions based on the cross-sectional analysis and makes suggestions for future work. The study concludes that the two most essential components of an effective education policy are greater attention to primary education and reduced public financing of higher education. Interspersed within the text are 49 tables and 36 figures. The appendices contain an additional 32 tables and the following: (1) a succinct description and comparative evaluation of the current status of education in individual Asian countries; (2) details on data sources and the corresponding core educational statistics; and (3) figures and miscellaneous data referred to in the text.
