Book Synopsis Selected Verse Anthems by : John Blow
Download or read book Selected Verse Anthems written by John Blow and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight verse anthems in this edition constitute the only full scores of works in Blow's hand that survive in this abundant genre. The scores are located in two manuscripts that are now parts of the collections at Christ Church, Oxford, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The Oxford manuscript includes five anthems from the 1670s, and each displays a variety of structural and musical-rhetoric procedures, making them ideal representatives of Blow's multifaceted early style. The Cambridge manuscript dates from ca. 1704 and contains three late works on a much larger scale. As a group, the later anthems require considerably greater virtuosity from the solo singers, and individual verse sections grow both longer and more numerous. As representative examples within a much larger repertoire, the works selected for this edition help to reveal important facets in the career of the first person to hold the title, Composer of the Chapel Royal.

Download or read book A Good Quire of Voices: The Provision of Choral Music at St.George's Chapel, Windsor Castle and Eton College, c.1640-1733 written by Keri Dexter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Until relatively recently, musicologists' account of church music in post-Restoration and early Georgian England has been substantially incomplete due to an almost exclusive preoccupation with the music and musicians of the Chapel Royal. The balance is now being redressed and this book begins the task of filling one of the remaining gaps in our understanding of the field. The volume represents a detailed examination of the practical workings of a choral foundation during the later 17th and early 18th centuries, placing the musicians within their wider historical and social contexts, and based on a comprehensive survey of extant archival material.

Book Synopsis Words and Music by : John Williamson
Download or read book Words and Music written by John Williamson and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word and music studies is a relatively young discipline that has nonetheless generated a substantial amount of work. Recent studies in the field have embraced music in literature (word music, formal parallels to music in literature, verbal music), music and literarature (vocal music) and literature in music (programme music). Other positions have been defined in which song exists as an analysable category distinct from words and music and requiring its own grammar. Much of the literature has tended to focus on readings of the literary text, pushing theoretical and analytical concerns in music to one side, a trend that is as apparent among musicologists as among literary historians. The essays presented here from the third Liverpool Music Symposium seek accordingly to redress this situation. Contributors tackle the study of words and music from a number of standpoints, examining artists as diverse as Eminem, Patti Smith and Arnold Schoenberg.
