Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first in a series of reports on the seismic performance of lightweight concrete bridge substructure elements. Through a discussion of experimental studies on two test units and analytical investigations, the shear capacity of lightweight concrete bridge columns subjected to cyclic loading is presented. Also presented in this report is a revised model for quantifying the contribution of transverse steel to shear strength that is applicable to both lightweight and normal weight concrete. An alternative method for the evaluation of shear deformation for design and assessment purposes is presented which is also applicable to lightweight and normal weight concrete members.

Book excerpt: Earthquake resistant structures and structures deteriorated due to earthquake and lack of durability inspired engineers to develop novel structural systems. During the recent decades advanced fiber reinforced cementitious composites such as High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (HPFRCs) have been developed. These innovative composite materials exhibit behavior not attainable with conventional concrete materials, such as high compressive and tensile strength, as well as ductility, which lead to a significant increase in the ability of the structure to dissipate energy. These properties are particularly desirable seismic resistant design. However, existing procedures for design, detailing and construction of reinforced concrete frames are not well suited for cost-effective construction with HPFRCs because HPFRCs are substantially different from conventional concrete materials. The structural system consisted of partially precast High Performance Composite Frames (HPCFs) has been investigated to address these issues in this National Science Foundation project. Such a composite frame is made by selectively using Slurry Infiltrated Mat Concrete (SIMCON), Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete (SIFCON), and High Strength - Lightweight Aggregate Fiber Reinforced Concrete (HS-LWA FRC). The objective is to increase the overall seismic resistance and simplify the post-earthquake retrofit procedures, while at the same time minimizing the cost by simplifying the construction procedure and increasing the speed of construction. This thesis presents the development, testing and behavior of an integral part of this innovative approach to earthquake resistant structures. HS-LWA FRC encased in steel tube allows for both improved seismic resistance and possibly more cost-effective method of construction than in conventional structures. The use of SIMCON jacket for HS-LWA FRC filled steel tube column member enhances the seismic behavior of the column, as well as it increases the durab.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of sand-lightweight concrete made with expanded shale aggregate is prevalent throughout the United States and other developed countries. Sand-lightweight concrete is approximately twenty percent lighter than its normalweight counterpart. Lateral earthquake forces applied to a building structure are directly proportional to its mass, so the potential for better seismic performance is clear. Unfortunately, concrete made with lightweight aggregate behaves differently in key aspects when compared to normalweight concrete that can negate its design force reducing advantage. Specifically, lightweight concrete is more brittle in nature than normalweight concrete and as such is less ductile. Ductility is key in seismic design because the structure must be able to absorb the energy produced by the earthquake. This study focused on determining the particular behavior of reinforced sand-lightweight concrete beam-column joints of moment frame buildings under a quasi-static cyclical loading that simulated a seismic event. Six half-scale experimental test specimens and sixty-five non-linear finite element models were used to evaluate the performance of the joints. The experimental portion of this study found that if designed and detailed in accordance with ACI 318-11 standards and if joint shear stress is kept within a reasonable limit, sand-lightweight beam column joints can perform as well as similarly built normalweight concrete specimens. This finding was true even for concrete compressive strengths up to 8000 pounds per square inch. The parametric finite element modeling portion of this study showed the effect on joint performance by varying the following four key parameters: the compressive strength of concrete, the amount of joint shear reinforcement, the longitudinal beam steel reinforcement ratio, and the axial load applied to the column.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the importance of shear capacity under seismic demands, clarifying existing differences between analytical models and existing experimental data, further experimental research on shear performance of reinforced lightweight concrete (RLWC) square columns signifies a current necessity for the civil engineering community. Responding to that necessity and in contrast to the majority of past research that considered monotonic loading, this research evaluated the performance of eight normal strength RLWC large scale square columns, under reversed cyclic loading, simulating earthquake demands, and considering shear failure mechanisms. The variables consisted of different types of aggregate for the concrete mixtures and two sets of specimens with different amount of transverse reinforcement. Moreover, one normal weight and three lightweight structural aggregates such as expanded shale, clay, and slate were considered in order to represent the production in the United States. Two sets of four specimens were designed to develop brittle and ductile shear failures at low and high levels of deformation respectively. A comparative analysis between normal, lightweight concrete, experimental, and analytical data was performed focusing on the shear resistance mechanism and behavior under simulated seismic demands. Shear resistance and deformation components were obtained to determine the difference between lightweight and normal weight concrete shear strengths and behavior at different levels of deformation. In general, results consistently revealed that, at low levels of deformation, the concrete shear strength component was lower in the case of lightweight concrete compared to normal weight concrete. Consequently, a shear strength reduction is recommended for normal strength RLWC square columns compared to capacity assessment models for normal weight concrete. Strength degradation, at low levels of deformation, occurred earlier in the case of RLWC compared to normal we.
