Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the puzzling phenomenon of new veiling practices among lower middle class women in Cairo, Egypt. Although these women are part of a modernizing middle class, they also voluntarily adopt a traditional symbol of female subordination. How can this paradox be explained? An explanation emerges which reconceptualizes what appears to be reactionary behavior as a new style of political struggle--as accommodating protest. These women, most of them clerical workers in the large government bureaucracy, are ambivalent about working outside the home, considering it a change which brings new burdens as well as some important benefits. At the same time they realize that leaving home and family is creating an intolerable situation of the erosion of their social status and the loss of their traditional identity. The new veiling expresses women's protest against this. MacLeod argues that the symbolism of the new veiling emerges from this tense subcultural dilemma, involving elements of both resistance and acquiescence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeds are a vital part of life on earth. They are fundamental for plant reproduction, and many seeds play an important role in the diet of man and domestic and wild animals. Knowledge of the appearance of seeds - seed morphology - is of great importance to botany and seed identification in relation to: seed setting, quarantine work, forensic work, seed poisening, studies of seed dispersal, seed banks and archaeological studies.;This bibliography contains 3775 references and is divided in two parts: handbooks, and articles and monographs. In the latter the bibliographical reference is supplemented by information of importance to seed identificaiton: genera mentioned in articles, keys, descriptions, drawings, photograph, scanning electron micrographs, anatomy and chemical methods. The index of authors contains the names of an extensive number of authors, cited in the bibliography, and in the index of genera more than 3900 genera, described in one or more of the publications are cited.

Book excerpt: Current major interests in this area include the study of higher level phylogenetic relationships and character evolution in the angiosperms, floral evolution, the genetic basis of key floral differences in basal angiosperms, the genetic and genomic consequences of polyploid speciation, conservation genetics of rare plant species, and phylogeography. Developmental Genetics of the Flower provides a series of papers focused on the developmental genetics of flowering as well as the genetic control of the timing of flowering. Investigation of speciational mechanisms, evolutionary relationships, and character evolution in flowering plants and land plants utilizing a variety of experimental approaches are discussed. The chapters are excellent reviews of the current fast-moving area of research. Provides a brief review of genes known to regulate flower development Articles emphasize the classic ABC model of flower development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solanaceous family is one of the most interesting and diverse plant groups among the dicotyledons. Plants of various genera are grown for their edible parts, for drugs, or for ornamental purposes. The six genera grown primarily as ornamental plants are: Browallia, Brunsfelsia, Datura, Nicotiana, Petunia, and Salpiglossis. Of these, Petunia is the most economically important in terms of worldwide use as an ornamental plant. In addition to its horticultural value and prominence, the genus Petunia plays a key role as experimental plant material in a broad range of horticultural and biological research endeavors. Because of the broad range of commercial and research interest in Petunia, the collaborating authors believed it was appropiate to prepare a monograph dealing in a comprehensive manner with all economic and biological facets of the genus Petunia. The authors sincerely hope that this monograph will be of resource value and stimulating to students, researchers, and workers in industry interested in having a compendium of the knowledge available on the genus Petunia.
