Book excerpt: The development of an improved agriculture is an indispensable step towards better living standards. It depends upon improved inputs of which seed is the most significant. Seed has always been regarded as the most vital, basic and critical input. Sage Parashara (circa 400 BC) had said, "the origin of plentiful yield is the seed". Today, more than two millennia later, the statement holds true and it will be hold true as long as humans inhabit the earth. Seed health is a priority area in seed production programme. In recent years, the awareness for seed health has increased among the growers, traders, consumers and policy makers. In post -GATT era and with the emergence of WTO concerns regarding the seed health have acquired high importance. In seed production programme, seed certification standards have been worked out. Several diseases have been designated objectionable at field and seed levels. The book provides comprehensive and integrated information on 57 seed-borne diseases covering about 40 major field and vegetable crops. The information is supplemented with about 127 photographs, explanation of technical words in glossary and further readings. The book will be of great help to the people engaged in seed production (fields and vegetable crops), seed certification, agricultural extension workers, field workers and seed industry. It will be of immense use for all the teachers, students and researchers of seed science and technology. Feature: sRole of seed-borne pathogens. Significance of seed health testing. Seed health testing for seed-borne fungal, bacterial, viral and nematode pathogens. Protocols for some common methods employed in seed health testing. Integrated management of seed-borne diseases. Indian seed certification standards for Field and Vegetable crops. Identification and management of objectionable seed-borne diseases. Information on pathogens, location in seeds, disease-cycle and spread, nature, losses, detection techniques and certification standards of 57 seed-borne diseases, supplemented with 127 black and white photographs. Book excerpt: The global population is increasing rapidly, and feeding the ever-increasing population poses a serious challenge for agriculturalists around the world. Seed is a basic and critical input in agriculture to ensure global food security. Roughly 90 percent of the crops grown all over the world are propagated by seed. However, seed can also harbour and spread pathogens, e.g. fungi, bacteria, nematodes, viruses etc., which cause devastating diseases. Seed-borne pathogens represent a major threat to crop establishment and yield. Hence, timely detection and diagnosis is a prerequisite for their effective management. The book "Seed-Borne Diseases of Agricultural Crops: Detection, Diagnosis & Management" addresses key issues related to seed-borne/transmitted diseases in various agricultural crops. Divided into 30 chapters, it offers a comprehensive compilation of papers concerning: the history of seed pathology, importance of seed-borne diseases, seed-borne diseases and quarantine, seed health testing and certification, detection and diagnosis of seed-borne diseases and their phytopathogens, host-parasite interactions during development of seed-borne diseases, diversity of seed-borne pathogens, seed-borne diseases in major agricultural crops, non-parasitic seed disorders, mechanisms of seed transmission and seed infection, storage fungi and mycotoxins, impact of seed-borne diseases on human and animal health, and management options for seed-borne diseases. We wish to thank all of the eminent researchers who contributed valuable chapters to our book, which will be immensely useful for students, researchers, academics, and all those involved in various agro-industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed is common fundamental to the production of all crops. Though many books have been written about the importance of using seed which is viable and free from weed seeds and diseases. The necessity is felt for the need to preserve the generic quality of seed during multiplications. Wigh the production of ever more sophisticated cultivars the work of the seed producer becomes of increasing importance. High seed yields are not enough in temselves and we need to arrange production in such a way that the qualities which give each cultivar a special place in agricultural production are preserved from one generation to the next. The book mainly emphasis on the precutions which the seed producer should take to ensure the production of good quality seed in the widest sense. The author studied the various problems, beginning with the definition of a cultivar and ending with stored seed ready for planting. This book is essentially practical, contins enough basic information to enable reader to understand the reasons behind the management practices which are descibed. It is hoped that the book will be useful to those who are involved in agricultural education, crop production into seed production, to extnesion workers and administration in seed programmers and to the practical seed producers.

New diseases and new biotypes of existing disease producing organisms appear from time to time in more virulent forms. The most startling aspect of plant diseases is that their management cost us a huge sum every year with serious consequences in environment and human health. Therefore, integrated disease management practices need to be refined and adopted to reduce the crop losses. In this book, the current status of various aspects of integrated disease management in fruits, vegetable, ornamentals, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, medicinal and forest plants etc. has been analyzed. Major focus is on the integrated disease management in horticultural crops. Emphasis has been given to the use of non-chemical methods like cultural practices, soil solarization, plant growth promoting microorganisms, organic amendments, botanicals and biocontrol agents. It is hoped that the book will serve as an important guide to the plant pathologists, horticulturists, nematologists, microbiologists, mushroom scientists, breeders and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed is the source of future plants or foods, is the storage place of culture of history, is the first link in the food chain, is the ultimate symbol of food security. Seed is the source of life. Seeds are basic in crop production. No agricultural practice can improve a crop beyond the limits set by the seed. Quality seed is the key for successful agriculture, which demands each and every seed should be readily germinable and produce a vigorous seedling ensuring high yield. “Care with the seed and joy with the harvest” and “Good seed doesn’t cost it always pays” are the popular adage which enlightens the importance of the quality seed. The farmers always very much interested in the best seed management practices which are safe, environmentally sound and scientifically proven technologies. Understandably, in view of the importance of quality seeds in Agriculture, both as a product and as a means of establishing a crop, most attention at all levels of investigation has been directed to crop seeds. Since seed is a biological entity, deterioration beyond harvest is inevitable. The consequences of low quality seeds are poor germination, low and delayed emergence and weak growth leading to poor field stand and ultimately reflecting on reduced yield. Low productivity could be attributed broadly to use of poor quality seeds. At present to overcome this, several seed enhancement techniques are available for quality upgradation. It has two goals; one is related to seed designing and other to seed functioning. The rationale for pre-sowing seed enhancement techniques is to mobilize the seeds own resources and to augment them with external resources to get maximum improvement in field stand establishment and yield. To achieve this, several physical, physiological and biochemical treatments are available at present to give value addition to seeds. Physiological seed treatments that improve seed performance are based primarily on seed hydration and dehydration. Among several non physiological seed treatments, coating or pelleting can also indirectly improve seed germination, stand establishment and crop productivity.

The authors of this manual have brought together, for direct observation and study on a comparative basis, pictures and practical descriptions of a large and representative a collection of seeds. In accord with the visual principal, the textual part of the manual is ample illustrated with 288 figures in the form of line drawings and diagrams, and the generic descriptions are accompanied by reference to the corresponding plates. Lavishly illustrated the pictorial part of the manual, containing 824 photographic plates, showing the seeds of more than 600 plant species, is divided into three habitat classification of Framlands, Wetlands and Woodlands from various parts of the United States. The immediate aim of this manual is to help agriculturists, foresters, wildlife biologists, chemical manufacturers, agricultural experiment stations, seed testing laboratories, and others interested in the land-use programs to identify the seeds in their particular ecological fields of interest. Bearing in mind the different backgrounds of the probable readers of this manual in respect to scientific preparations and experiences, the authors have thought it best to keep the descriptions nontechnical, so far as was feasible, and thus adapt the material to a broad range of interests and skills.
