Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In works by filmmakers from Bertolucci to Spielberg, debauched images of nazi and fascist eroticism, symbols of violence and immorality, often bear an uncanny resemblance to the images and symbols once used by the fascists themselves to demarcate racial, sexual, and political others. This book exposes the "madness" inherent in such a course, which attests to the impossibility of disengaging visual and rhetorical constructions from political, ideological, and moral codes. Kriss Ravetto argues that contemporary discourses using such devices actually continue unacknowledged rhetorical, moral, and visual analogies of the past. Against postwar fictional and historical accounts of World War II in which generic images of evil characterize the nazi and the fascist, Ravetto sets the more complex approach of such filmmakers as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Liliana Cavani, and Lina Wertmuller. Her book asks us to think deeply about what it means to say that we have conquered fascism, when the aesthetics of fascism still describe and determine how we look at political figures and global events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart's Don Giovanni is an operatic masterpiece full of iconic and mythical tensions that still resonate today. The work redefines the terms of power, seduction, and morality, and the resulting conflict between the aesthetic and the ethical is deeply rooted in the Enlightenment and romanticism. The Don Giovanni Moment is the first book to examine the aesthetic and moral legacy of Mozart's opera in the literature, philosophy, and culture of the nineteenth century. The prominent scholars in this collection address the opera's impact on the philosophical visions of Kierkegaard, Goethe, and Williams and its influence on the literary and dramatic works of Pushkin, Hoffmann, Mörike, Byron, Wagner, Strauss, and Shaw. Through a close and careful analysis of Don Giovanni's literary and philosophical reception and its many appropriations, rewritings, and retellings, these contributors treat the opera as a vantage point from which theory and philosophy can reconsider romanticism's central themes. As lively and passionate as the opera itself, these essays continue the spirited debate over the meaning and character of Don Giovanni and its powerful legacy. Together they prove that Mozart's brilliant artistic achievement is as potent and relevant today as when it was first performed two centuries ago.

Book excerpt: This double issue of Digital Culture & Society addresses the dialectics of play and labour, taking a closer look at the problem of play and work from two overlapping, albeit not mutually exclusive, perspectives. After the first issue explored the notion of laborious play, this second one studies the concept of playful work. The contributions feature critical inquiries into various phenomena of playful work - ranging from interfaces of play and work in the BDSM subculture over labour in digital gaming to high frequency trading. Alongside the articles, the issue features an interview with Fred Turner, Chair of the Department of Communication at Stanford University. He talks about the Bauhaus in the US, countercultural cybernetics, technology and consciousness, and work in the Silicon Valley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Fictions of the Sixties focuses on the major socio-political changes that marked the sixties in relationship to the development of literature over the decade. This book is the first critical study to acknowledge that the 1960s can only be understood if, next to its contemporary socio-political history, its fictions and mythologies are acknowledged as a vital constituent in the understanding of the decade. Groes uncovers a major epistemological shift, and presents a powerful meta-narrative about post-war literature in the UK, and beyond. British Fictions of the Sixties offers a re-examination of canonical writers such as Iris Murdoch, Angela Carter, Muriel Spark and John Fowles. It also pays critical attention to avant-garde writers including Ann Quinn, Bridget Brophy, Eva Figes, Christine Brooke-Rose, and J. G. Ballard, presenting a comprehensive insight into the continuing power the decade exerts on the contemporary imagination.

The management of sex offenders in the community is of paramount concern to the general public, and this is reflected in the numberous recent changes to public protection procedures. Managing High Risk Sex Offenders in the Community covers both the assessment and management of high risk sex offenders in the community, with an emphasis on evidence-based approaches. The reader will be able to access the most widely used actuarial approaches to risk assessment and understand the clinical themes that underpin such variables. The book answers questions including: * Are sex offenders likely to escalate their behaviour if not stopped? * Is the risk on the streets or at home? * Can we differentiate between those offenders who will and those who will not reoffend? This book links psychologically-based theoretical principles with practical considerations for professionals in the field. By demystifying the current state of knowledge on risk posed by sex offenders, practitioners will be well placed to engage in defensible decision-making and strive for best practice in the community.

Book excerpt: Long-Term Psychoanalytic Supervision with Donald Meltzer is a detailed account of a particularly demanding analysis which Donald Meltzer closely supervised over twelve years. This will enable the reader to closely follow the internal life of a long-term, trying analysis. The reader can see how Meltzer’s thoughts had crucially guided the course of this analysis in many of its most challenging moments, often redirecting it. By watching things happening, the reader is enabled to get a deeper insight into Meltzer's highly complex, though outstanding thought. On many particularly important points, the author invited Meltzer to give his thoughts and interpretations in his own words as if he himself was the analyst. This provides the reader with a unique opportunity to ‘listen’ to Meltzer verbatim. Long-Term Psychoanalytic Supervision with Donald Meltzer demonstrates the often overwhelming yet fascinating complexities of mental life and will speak to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, as well as those interested in the philosophy of the mind.

Book excerpt: Theology and Technique is a posthumous, incomplete volume drafted in the 1970s that nevertheless constitutes a significant addition to the Ellul corpus. Working from Jacques Ellul's original outline, a collaborative team including three of Ellul's children, a grandson, and Ellul scholars has assembled previous partial publications that Ellul himself approved for eventual incorporation along with relevant unpublished essays and notes into a book which throws the relationship between Ellul's radical theology and sociological critique into fresh perspective. Frederic Rognon contributes an especially insightful general introduction. The translation by Christian Roy is a model of rendering the complexities of the French original into English. This latest Ellul publication will be essential to any serious attempt to appreciate the scope and depth of Ellul's Christian engagement with the challenges of the contemporary world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I hated to admit it, but I'd given up hope on finding a solution to my little spell problem. Not that I'd say it out loud where Arthur might hear me, because if I did, he'd have another reason to grumble at me for another millenia. Arthur wasn't the worst person to be trapped in Avalon with… No, that award would go to Morgana. It would be hell. Literally. We'd find creative ways to kill each other just to remember that we couldn't die, not while still in Avalon. I should clarify… We'd die, but Avalon heals all wounds which would basically be a loop of murder and death. Yeah, hell. When I'd dragged Arthur through the portal, I hoped he'd heal and we could be on our way back to Camelot. But Morgana had other ideas. She'd tried to come through and magically shove Arthur back into a world of final death. He was mostly annoying, but I liked the guy, and he didn't deserve that because Morgana was a crazy witch. It's not my fault she convinced the dragon to lie to me about a prophecy involving her and I. If I could go back and kill that dragon for pulling Arthur into it, I would in a heartbeat. Fucker ruined his life. Though, it was my fault that I tried to kill her after I found out the truth. Sure, I'd uttered words with double meanings when I'd thrown up a barrier to keep Morgana out of Avalon, but the last thing I needed was a woman to distract me. Fifteen hundred years… that was how long I'd accidentally trapped us in Avalon with no back portal out of this place. I couldn't survive on apples forever… oh wait, yes I could. I just didn't want to. Then Morgana shoved Gwen into Avalon and into my life. Everything about Gwen drew me to her, especially her take-no-shit attitude. Arthur always said I fell in love too easily… But something about Gwen left me wondering if she fell into the true love category. I hadn't seen a new woman since I cast the barrier spell over a millenia ago… and she intrigued me. Of course the insanity didn't stop there. How was I supposed to know Gwen would weaken the barrier? And the key she carried. Something about it looked… felt familiar. I needed a second look because it might be the thing I've been searching for. Honestly, I think my spell may have sought out Gwen and given her the power she has now… but why? She'll hate me if she finds out everything that happened to her is my fault. No. She can't find out the truth. The spell I uttered in a moment when my life passed before my eyes called for unity. Deep down, I suspected it referred to Gwen, Arthur, and me… and that strange cat-man she kept as a pet. Which meant we had to all get along. Whenever Gwen was in the room with me, she was all I could think about. Kissing her had been a mistake. The strange sensation in my gut when I was around her was dangerous. To save Avalon, I needed to get close enough to Gwen for the spell to work… without falling for her. But first, I had to heal her. Then I'd seduce her. It was impossible to seduce someone I loved… right? I scooped out the healing salve and drew the base spell on Gwen's stomach. The feel of her skin under my fingers sent a spark through me. Touching her like this was almost unbearable. Though I suspected Arthur had purposely taken Lance with him so I could have alone time with Gwen. With the potions applied, I whispered the spell with far more emotional attachment than I had the first time. The pull of magic was much stronger than before. Proof that I was falling for her. My mind ran through the spell I'd cast seconds before Arthur and I would have died. I was certain Gwen was the one power tied to the fate of Avalon. But if we were to achieve unity, she had to love me as much as I was starting to love her. With my mind made up, I stood and took Gwen's hand. I guided her over to my bed and pulled my shirt off. Seducing Gwen was just the beginning...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When representing the Holocaust, the slightest hint of narrative embellishment strikes contemporary audiences as somehow a violation against those who suffered under the Nazis. This anxiety is, at least in part, rooted in Theodor Adorno's dictum that "To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric." And despite the fact that he later reversed his position, the conservative opposition to all "artistic" representations of the Holocaust remains powerful, leading to the insistent demand that it be represented, as it really was. And yet, whether it's the girl in the red dress or a German soldier belting out Bach on a piano during the purge of the ghetto in Schindler's List, or the use of tracking shots in the documentaries Shoah and Night and Fog, all genres invent or otherwise embellish the narrative to locate meaning in an event that we commonly refer to as "unimaginable." This wide-ranging book surveys and discusses the ways in which the Holocaust has been represented in cinema, covering a deep cross-section of both national cinemas and genres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of sexual sadism emerged from nineteenth-century alienist attempts to imagine the pleasure of the torturer or mass killer. This was a time in which sexuality was mapped to social progress, so that perversions were always related either to degeneration or decadence. These ideas were internalized in later Freudian views of the drives within the self, and of their repression under the demands of modern European civilization. Sadism was always presented as the barbarous past that lurked within each of us, ready to burst forth into murderous violence, crime, anti-Semitism, and finally genocide. This idea maintained its currency in European thought after the Second World War as Freudian-influenced accounts of the history of philosophy configured the Marquis de Sade as a kind of Kantian “superego” in a framework that viewed the Western Enlightenment as unraveled by its own inner demons. In this way, a straight line was imagined from the late eighteenth century to the Holocaust. These ideas have had an ongoing legacy in debates about sexual perversion, feminism, genocide representation, and historical memory of Nazism. However, recent genocide research has massively debunked assumptions that perpetrators of mass violence are especially sexually motivated in their cruelty. This book considers how the late twentieth-century imagination eroticized Nazism for its own ends, but also how it has been informed by nineteenth-century formulations of the idea of mass violence as a sexual problem.
