Book excerpt: Lake Tomah, Wisconsin, is a shallow eutrophic system with excessive summer cyanobacterial blooms and poor water quality. Intact sediment cores were collected to measure sediment P release rates as a function of redox and pH under laboratory conditions, as well as examine ve rtical variations in sediment mobile P fractions. Anaerobic conditions led to a mean release rate of 15.52 mg/m 2 d (± 0.84, standard error, SE), which was approximately 9 and 6 times greater than aerobic conditions when bubbled with ambient air containing CO 2 (mean pH= 8.25, mean rate= 1.67 mg/m 2 d, ± 0.11 SE ) or CO 2 -free air (mean pH= 8.88, mean rate= 2.49 mg/m 2 d, ± 0.34 SE), respectively. The greater P release rate at an elevated pH suggested the potential for enhanced P release from aerobic sediment by ligand exchange. The elevated surface concentrations of total and biologically-labile P overlaying lower, constant concentrations at deeper depths, represented potentially mobile P linked to internal loading. Internal P loading under aerobic conditions at high pH potentially accounted for 27%, while tributary loading represented 73 % of the measured P input to Lake Tomah (2011 -2012 ). Thus, P release from sediment played a potentially important role in summer P budget of the lake.
