Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of Internet security doesn’t lie in doing more of the same. It requires not only a new architecture, but the means of securing that architecture. Two trends have come together to make the topic of this book of vital interest. First, the explosive growth of the Internet connections for the exchange of information via networks increased the dependence of both organizations and individuals on the systems stored and communicated. This, in turn, has increased the awareness for the need to protect the data and add security as chief ingredient in the newly emerged architectures. Second, the disciplines of cryptography and network security have matured and are leading to the development of new techniques and protocols to enforce the network security in Future Internet. This book examines the new security architectures from organizations such as FIArch, GENI, and IETF and how they’ll contribute to a more secure Internet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. INTRODUCTION With the increasing deployment of wireless networks (802. 11 architecture) in enterprise environments, IT enterprises are working to implement security mechanisms that are equivalent to those existing today for wire-based networks. An important aspect of this is the need to provide secure access to the network for valid users. Existing wired network jacks are located inside buildings already secured from unauthorized access through the use of keys, badge access, and so forth. A user must gain physical access to the building in order to plug a client computer into a network jack. In contrast, a wireless access point (AP) may be accessed from off the premises if the signal is detectable (for instance, from a parking lot adjacent to the building). Thus, wireless networks require secure access to the AP and the ability to isolate the AP from the internal private network prior to user authentication into the network domain. Furthermore, as enterprises strive to provide better availability of mission-critical wireless data, they also face the challenge of maintaining that data's security and integrity. While each connection with a client, a supplier or a enterprise partner can improve responsiveness and efficiency, it also increases the vulnerability of enterprise wireless data to attack. In such an environment, wireless network security is becoming more important every day. Also, with the growing reliance on e-commerce, wireless network-based services and the Internet, enterprises are faced with an ever-increasing responsibility to protect their systems from attack.

Book excerpt: Architectural decisions are crucial to the success of any ISP, because they will determine the cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and scalability of the infrastructure used to deliver services. Designing ISP Architectures is a start-to-finish best-practices guide to effective ISP architectural design and implementation. Leading ISP architect and consultant John V. Nguyen uses a running case study to cover every step of the process: formulating design requirements; establishing an architectural model; creating and documenting both logical and physical designs; selecting components; and implementing the architecture you've defined. Nguyen demonstrates how to create platform-independent architectures that can support rapid growth in subscribership, ongoing new product introductions, low-cost operation, and effective management. Along the way, he identifies key tradeoffs and limitations, offering practical guidance architects can use to optimize ISP infrastructure for any marketplace or application portfolio. For every IT architect, consultant, and network professional responsible for designing or implementing ISP architectures.

Book excerpt: Architecture and Design for the Future Internet addresses the Networks of the Future and the Future Internet, focusing on networks aspects, offering both technical and non-technical perspectives. It presents the main findings of 4WARD (Architecture and Design for the Future Internet), a European Integrated Project within Framework Programme 7, which addressed this area from an innovative approach. Today’s network architectures are stifling innovation, restricting it mostly to the application level, while the need for structural change is increasingly evident. The absence of adequate facilities to design, optimise and interoperate new networks currently forces a convergence to an architecture that is suboptimal for many applications and that cannot support innovations within itself, the Internet. 4WARD overcomes this impasse through a set of radical architectural approaches, built on a strong mobile and wireless background. The main topics addressed by the book are: the improved ability to design inter-operable and complementary families of network architectures; the enabled co-existence of multiple networks on common platforms through carrier-grade virtualisation for networking resources; the enhanced utility of networks by making them self-managing; the increased robustness and efficiency of networks by leveraging diversity; and the improved application support by a new information-centric paradigm in place of the old host-centric approach. These solutions embrace the full range of technologies, from fibre backbones to wireless and sensor networks.
