Book excerpt: Since it was discovered in 1908, the Phaistos Disk - one of the most important artifacts from Crete's minoan culture - has challenged scholars of diverse diciplines and captivated interests of amateurs. Its allure is primarily due to the fact that no one has been able to really solve its mystery. None of the numerous decipherments has found general acceptance or scientific approval. This book does not offer yet another attempt at deciphering the Disk. Rather, it is a short presentation of the various research efforts on the dating and origin, writing and language, as well as content and purpose of the Disk. This lively account of the most important aspects of a not-so-strictly-scholarly debate, which has gone on for decades, also includes a view of the putative solutions.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading The pre-modern world, especially the ancient world, is full of many mysteries, riddles, and enigmas that have perplexed scholars and lay people alike for centuries. One does not have to search long to find some of these mysteries. Ancient Egypt is often thought of as one of the most arcane of all civilizations with many aspects of its culture that are only now coming to light. For instance, the hieroglyphic script was not deciphered until the 19th century and to date scholars are still unsure about the details concerning how the pyramids were built or how mummies were made since there are no extant ancient "guidebooks" of either. In the New World, the sudden decline of the Mayan culture has captured the imagination of many for generations as the Maya left no records detailing their downfall. Likewise, the oldest European culture to reach the status of "civilization" - the Minoans - remains a mystery to the modern world in many ways. Nearly 2,500 years after the Golden Age of Athens, people across the world today continue to be fascinated by the Ancient Greeks, but the Greeks looked up to the Minoans. In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus makes note of "a great town there, Cnossus, where Minos reigned." It was perhaps the earliest reference to the Minoan civilization, a mysterious ancient civilization that historians and archaeologists still puzzle over, but a civilization that renowned historian Will Durant described as "the first link in the European chain." Nearly 2,000 years before Homer wrote his epic poems, the Minoan civilization was centered on the island of Crete, a location that required the Minoans to be a regional sea power. And indeed they were, stretching across the Aegean Sea from about 2700-1500 BCE, with trade routes extending all the way to Egypt. Archeologists have found evidence that many of the Cretan cities suffered severe damage and were ravaged by fire at the same time Minoan trade diminished. Although some of the cities were reoccupied and partially rebuilt, the Minoan civilization never fully recovered. There is evidence that the Myceneans from the mainland began to occupy the cities of Crete and became the dominant traders in the Eastern Mediterranean. Throughout the late 19th century and much of the 20th century, some scholars believed the Minoans were unable to maintain their dominance over the bellicose Myceneans, while others speculated the growth of the Minoan population could not be supported by the agricultural production of Crete. However, recent archaeological finds have led to a consensus among scholars that the Minoan civilization was destroyed by a natural cataclysm. The Minoans may have been the first link in the "European chain," leading to the Ancient Greeks and beyond, but questions persist over the origins of the civilization, the end of the civilization, and substantial parts of their history, including their religion and buildings. All of this is largely because their written language, known today as "Linear A," remains undeciphered, and among the more enigmatic finds of this truly enigmatic culture was a small disk-shaped object excavated among the ruins of the Minoan city of Phaistos in 1908. The disc, which has since become known simply as the "Phaistos Disc," contains a number of pictographic symbols that were unrecognized by the scholars who first laid eyes on the object and remain unknown in the more than 100 years since. The contents of the Phaistos Disc, like the Minoan language of Linear A, remain unclear, but that is not for lack of trying by a plethora of scholars, some more credible than others. Many different theories have been advanced, but there is still no consensus concerning its origins, or even if it was intended to be writing.

Book excerpt: This book is the preliminary part of a great work titled «THE BOOK OF THE EGYPTIAN: The beginning of the basic Egyptology or a key to the understanding of history, philosophy and world religion». Usually, the introduction is made in the form of a brief preface or foreword, but I got a whole book as the first step in a multi-volume publication of the study. The purpose of this specific introduction as the beginning of serious research – is right at the level of the opening to inspire a reader, showing him in a clear visual and comprehensible form, the whole true mechanism of the hieroglyphic writing. To achieve this, I will completely dispel the myth created by the modern science that hieroglyphs do not convey any meaning (of words, the whole idea), but only individual sounds (letters), or their combination (syllables). This scientific myth will be finally deprived of the status of scientific knowledge, and the translation of the Phaistos disc, on the contrary, will be clearly shown, what is called «broken apart», and will be read in the ancient hieroglyphic language united by the principle of construction – in the language of the ancient Egyptians. I can say that it will not be two simultaneously existing systems of hieroglyphs translation, as well as two Egyptologies, one will be false, and the other – true! To prove the validity of the system of translation I wanted to give you immediately not only a complete translation of the text of the Phaistos disc, where the number of occurrences of each hieroglyph is not big (1 to 19 times), but the translation of the whole ancient Egyptian writing, because the number of times it is used in there is thousands, if not even millions. And each such use of each hieroglyph is translating in the same way, so it creates the full reading of the hieroglyphic texts – writing, which will be easily read by everyone with the dictionary of hieroglyphs in the future. The main reason why I wanted to do it – is because, at first, I read the ancient Egyptian texts and only then, by chance, came across with the hieroglyphs of the Phaistos disc. But then, I decided to set a different aim – to teach the reader to think, and not just to read hieroglyphs. Since we have no ancient Egyptian temple, and you're not its novice, the method of achieving the aims will be different than in the antiquity. First of all, I would suggest not a translation of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, but a complete translation of the Phaistos disc, and at the same time to give them a sort of test of common sense to modern science in the face of particular academies and universities of the world. Let them answer me the question, not knowing the translations of ancient Egyptian texts, – whether they think this translation of the Phaistos disc is correct? So when I completely publish «The Book of Egyptian», it will become clear who they are and where do they lead all of you. As they always test the students, it's a time to test them as well. Will they pass the test, I do not know, but any way, you, my reader, will get to know about it, (in the main manuscript) and will be able to draw your own conclusions about their intellectual level. Therefore, I recommend you to take this message of the book, at least with the attention, because not every day the science gets a ready revelation, designed in the form of scientific study. And here the attention and common sense will help the reader to re-look the original, pure, uncomplicated meaning of the Hieroglyphs, which through the veil of delusion will finally begin to appear in their true, original and vibrant colors – and finally, get from the nether world – into the realm of the living!

Book excerpt: Sometimes there are places that we find particularly attractive; places where we want to stay because something that is beyond our understanding calls to us. What I am about to describe to you belongs to this type of situation. The Phaistos Disc is a mystery. It belongs to that group of objects which are not interpretable through the classic historical-archaeological method. The Kernos Stone, however, is not considered to be a mystery: it is simply thought to be a surface for offerings. For traditional scholars, it is obvious what unites the Phaistos Disc to the Kernos Stone: they are both artifacts that belong to the archaeological heritage of Crete. Nothing more. But if we link these two objects in our imagination and, indeed, put one on top of the other, perhaps in the same place and at a specific day of the year, we would not only get the solution to an enigma, but also the magic combination to open the mystery that unites them and encloses them: an ancient ritual in which they were used together.

Book excerpt: During one of my space, alien and war ebook research, I encountered the Phaistos Disk looking like a delicious cracker biscuit alongside other unsolvable primitive mystical objects and I thought it was an alien object. I put it in the cooler to research on it later. In my ebook as usual, you will read information given to me spiritually and uniquely different. The Phaistos Disk discovered by Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in Minoan palace of Phaistos on the island of Crete and since 1908, about 114 years ago, Phaistos Disk mystery reluctantly remain unsolved to acceptable logical conclusion. Luigi Pernier, Sir Arthur Evans and others attempted to translate the disks but were unsuccessful. Since that time no fewer than 26 notable attempts have been made to decipher the code, experts have tried to solve the jigsaw surrounding the Phaistos Disk with varying degrees of inconclusive successes, some experts concluded that Phaistos Disk is a fake, others believed it's real. Some at face value believed it's for Astarte goddess of love that glow and grows dim, it's ancient prayer, it's a lunisolar calendar, a game board, a hymn or poem etc. At face value, I believe it's a eulogy statements for the king and queen for side A and B. But when I researched into the Phaistos Disk directly, it was a different revelations altogether. To me the Phaistos Disk first look like a recorded Noah's ark story then like a spy device dating back to the Minoan Bronze Age (second millennium BC), a disk made of clay is one of the most easily destroyed items to imprint secrete coded messages on, in a wet or dry condition in order to safe guard exposure with quick destruction to sand or dust if the need arise. With sound knowledge of analysis, I believe I have finally solved the mystery behind the disk, but I leave it for the readers to judge. For anybody to solve the disk mystery, the researcher will need to tell us what is inside the disk and what they can use the disk for, my decipherments is logogrammatic to simulate linguistic and non-linguistic. You will open your mouth because the research pointed toward spiritual path that scientists does not traverse. It was a different ball game entirely from my reading the disk directly, I will have to deviate into Divination List from Yoruba, Greek to India. For those that has read other hypotheses on Phaistos Disk, you have not read physical into the spiritual hypothesis on the disk anywhere. If my analysis on Phaistos Disk is simple as the others, a blog can accommodate it. Like I said this is different from others, you will conclude yourself whether Luigi Pernier forged the Phaistos Disk or not.

Book excerpt: A clay disk that looks like a child's game has become a headache for archaeologists and historians. And for the throngs of tourists who visit Crete, it is fascinating for its mystery. This is a completely new interpretation of the meaning of the Phaistos Disc, which opens new horizons never before imagined by archaeologists and historians. The utilized interpretative methodology is new as well: It presents a new way of investigating artifacts that are mysterious due to their age; direct evidence isn't possible and interpretation is difficult. The ancients' access to ideas was much different than now. The difficulty of understanding lies in the code of communication, which is no longer understood and in the contents themselves, since neither of the two falls within our wealth of knowledge. The result with the classic historical-archaeological method can only be "un-understanding". This book presents one possible solution. If we are willing to mix "Sacred and Profane", "Rational and Intuitive", and "Scientist and Artist", we can reach the result of this book: The unveiling of a meaning that would otherwise remain mysterious to the mind of modern man.

How did these people sound when they talked? What would that piece of clay say if it could speak! The enigma of the Phaistos Disc is revisited here in the light of new findings. From the various interpretations of the origin of the symbols depicted on the disc. Kober, Ventris, Chadwick and Bennett, the cryptologists are remembered for paving the way for us to understand the language and culture of early societies. Archaeological excavations, archaic languages and Myths are explored, together with theories of archaic Cretan relations as far away as the Black Sea. If this book enthuses just one person to forge ahead to uncover new information to allow “The Stones to Speak,” then I will be satisfied.

Will Pearson investigates twenty unique mysteries with their broad spectrum of strangeness. Some, like the sudden disappearance of the sailing ship Mary Celeste's passengers and crew have gained universal currency. Was the Wow! Signal a radio transmission form deep space, or was it the ambient resonating frequency of a passing comet? Cryptids like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster teeter on the boundaries of probable and improbable, hoax and reality, fact and fiction. Whether it be the intrigue of lost civilisations, like Göblekli Tepe in Turkey, sensationalist interest in The Zodiac Killer, or the elusive Shugborough Code that neither Dickens nor Darwin could crack, each unsolved mystery presents a challenge in its own way. Occasionally, it can feel as if there's a conspiracy at work - one in which scientists, journalists and 'professional explainers' want to put an end to anything and everything mysterious in life. Thankfully, not everything can be nailed down, sucked dry of its secrets and turned into a factoid. Mysteries do still exist - and continue to tease us. Sceptic or believer, the fun lies in probing them.

Beside its role in computerized information systems, cryptology is finding more and more applications inside computer systems and networks, extending to access rights and source file protection. The first part of this book treats secret codes and their uses - cryptography - before moving on to the process of covertly decrypting a secret code - cryptanalysis. Spiced with a wealth of exciting, amusing, and occasionally personal stories from the history of cryptology, and presupposing only elementary mathematical knowledge, this book will also stimulate general readers.
