Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American System of Agricultural Education In 1895 the association appointed a standing committee on methods Of teaching agriculture, which has since presented 13 reports of pro gress. The first report 1 was devoted to recommendations regarding agricultural nomenclature and a review Of agricultural education in European countries; the second report to suggestions regarding the subjects to be included in a four-year course in agriculture; the third, fourth, and fifth reports included outlines for courses in agronomy, zootechny, agrotechny, rural engineering, and rural economics; the Sixth report described methods and facilities for teaching agronomy in the agricultural colleges; the seventh2 showed how secondary courses in agriculture may be incorporated into existing high - school courses; the eighth discussed the relation Of the natural sciences to agriculture in a four-year college course; the ninth3 was devoted to the teaching Of agriculture in the rural common schools; the tenth and eleventh dealt with a secondary course in agrenomy; the twelfth was a preliminary report on a college course in rural engineering; and the thirteenth5 was a secondary course in animal husbandry and dairy ing. These reports have been of great value to the colleges in develop ing their courses in agriculture and reducing them to pedagogic form, and, though it has not been found feasible in any Single institution to adopt all of the recommendations Of the committee, yet many of its suggestions have been acted upon with benefit to the courses of study in agriculture, so that now these courses are coming to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the High School There must be a philosophy of secondary agricultural education. Conscious aims must be set up and their desirability established, and means and methods worked out that shall be effective in securing the realization of these aims. Clearer ideas are needed of the peda gogical principles involved, and the aims in view need to be more clearly defined. In this day of special methods for the teaching of the various school subjects, there should also be one for the teaching of agriculture. So far as our knowledge goes, there is not a book that treats of the methods of teaching this subject in the high school. A consider able amount has been written on the methods of teaching nature study in the elementary school, and the agricultural colleges have their own peculiar methods adaptable to the needs of the college student, but the field embracing school methods in secondary agri culture is still a virgin one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Education in Agriculture in the United States The county agricultural schools were first established in Wisconsin in 1902. These schools have been equipped at the expense of the counties where they are located, but the State aids each school to the extent of a year, to be applied to the running expenses. The course of study in each school extends over two years and is of quite a practical character, including agriculture, wood working, iron work ing, and domestic science, besides local United States history, civil government, and commercial arithmetic. County agricultural schools are also found in Maryland, Michigan, and Mississippi. The statistics for the normal schools have already been given, show ing that over 100 normal schools in the country are giving instruction in agriculture. This instruction is quite different in character in different schools. In some cases there is a regular course by a special instructor who is a graduate of an agricultural college. In other cases the teaching of agriculture has been taken up by the science teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This has meant duplication of extensive farm and school equipment. In a few cases normal schools and agricul tural colleges have cooperated in the training of secondary teachers, the normal schools or school of education given the professional training and the agricultural colleges the technical training. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eleventh Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education: Agricultural Education in Secondary Schools Some idea of the present demand for instructors qualified to teach agriculture in secondary schools may be derived from the fact that in the United States at present there are over a hundred special agricul tural schools located in 17 different states supported in whole or in part by the states, and that agriculture was taught in 1910, as a separate subject in more or less complete courses, to over pupils in public and 140 private high schools, according to the reports submitted by these schools to the Bureau of Education. It is true that much of the instruction given in these schools is very elementary and is of an informational rather than a practical character. It is true also that the courses given are very brief in the majority of cases. On the other hand there are fully as many high schools giving four-year courses as there are special agricultural schools and the courses given by them are as vocational in their character as the courses given by the majority of the special schools. California, for instance, has 12 high schools with agricultural departments in charge Of special agricultural teachers. All of these schools are supplied with land for instructional purposes vary ing from 3 to 27 acres in extent; all have available laboratories and several have greenhouses. Michigan has 11 high schools with four-year courses in agriculture, each taught by a graduate of the Michigan Agri cultural College. Massachusetts, New York, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Vermont each has several such schools. One or more may be found In almost every state in the Union.
