Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the recent, high power ICRH experiments performed on the ST Tokamak are reported. It was demonstrated that both the fast and slow waves could be generated in toroidal geometry, and heating of the plasma ions at power levels up to 1 MW was observed both at the ion cyclotron frequency ($omega$/sub ci/) and its second harmonic (2$omega$/sub ci/). Measurements by a charge exchange neutral detector directed tangentially to the plasma torus revealed that at 2$omega$/sub ci/ the ion energy within the bulk of the ion distribution function (''parallel body temperature'') could be increased from about 100 eV up to 200 eV with efficiencies ranging from 8 to 45 percent. Efficiency at $omega$/ sub ci/ in raising the parallel temperature was less than at 2$omega$/sub ci/. Charge exchange neutral detection perpendicular to the plasma column showed that both at $omega$/sub ci/ and 2$omega$/sub ci/ the ''perpendicular body temperature'' was enhanced very rapidly by a factor of up to 3. Also, buildup of a high energy ''tail'' in the ion energy distribution was observed. Power transfer to the ions seemed extremely efficient. (auth).

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast waves at harmonics of the ion cyclotron frequency, which have been used successfully on National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX), will also play an important role in ITER and are a promising candidate for the Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) designs based on spherical torus (ST). Experimental studies of high harmonic fast waves (HHFW) heating on the NSTX have demonstrated that substantial HHFW power loss occurs along the open field lines in the scrape-off layer (SOL), but the mechanism behind the loss is not yet understood. The full wave RF code AORSA, in which the edge plasma beyond the last closed flux surface (LCFS) is included in the solution domain, is applied to specific NSTX discharges in order to predict the effects and possible causes of this power loss. In the studies discussed here, a collisional damping parameter has been implemented in AORSA as a proxy to represent the real, and most likely nonlinear, damping processes. A prediction for the NSTX Upgrade (NSTX-U) experiment, that will begin operation next year, is also presented, indicating a favorable condition for the experiment due to a wider evanescent region in edge density.*Research supported by the U.S. DOE under Contract No. DE-AC02-09CH11466 with Princeton University.
Book Synopsis Maximizing Absorption in Ion-cyclotron Heating of Tokamak Plasmas by :
Download or read book Maximizing Absorption in Ion-cyclotron Heating of Tokamak Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient ion-cyclotron heating in tokamak plasmas is effectively localized in the central region of the plasma, near the ion second-harmonic layer in a single ion species plasma, or near the ion-ion hybrid layer in a plasma containing a minority ion species. The fast Alfven wave (FAW), which carries the incident rf power, from the low magnetic-field side, is generally focused in (by antenna design and propagation) toward this central region on the equatorial plane of the tokamak plasma. There the FAW encounters a "coupling" region and may undergo reflection (R), transmission(T)-to the high magnetic field side, mode conversion (C)-to an ion-Bernstein wave (IBW), and kinetic dissipation (D)-due to Doppler-shifted ion-cyclotron damping. (Here we ignore electron TTMP and/or Landau damping; these can be readily included by expanding on our formalism.) To determine these power transfer coefficients (R, T, C and D) the problem is in general formulated as an integro-partial-differential equation based upon the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations for an inhomogenous plasma. This is however difficult to solve, even numerically, and has been usually approximated by a fourth or sixth-order o.d.e. description which is amenable to numerical integration.
