Book excerpt: Effective angular momentum functions from atmosphere, oceans, and terrestrial water storage are obtained from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts atmospheric data and corresponding simulations with the Ocean Model for Circulation and Tides and the Land Surface and Discharge Model (LSDM). Mass exchanges among the subsystems are realized by means of freshwater fluxes, causing the total ocean mass to vary predominantly annually. Variations in total ocean mass affect the oceanic excitations of the annual wobble by almost 1 milliarc second (mas) for both prograde and retrograde components, whereas the motion term contributions of terrestrial water flow derived from LSDM are found to be 3 orders of magnitude smaller. Since differences to geodetic excitations are not substantially reduced and regional decompositions demonstrate the large spatial variability of contributions to seasonal polar motion excitation that compensate each other when integrated globally, it is concluded that the closure of the seasonal excitation budget is still inhibited by remaining model errors in all subsystems.

Many efforts have been made to relate spectral peaks to geophysical processes, such as atmospheric or oceanic variations. However, the mechanisms of excitation of some typical oscillations are still unclear. In order to get insight into the rotational dynamics of the Earth, the non-linear gyroscopic Earth model DyMEG has been developed. The present paper studies the superposed effect of atmospheric and oceanic excitation on the free rotation of a viscoelastic gyro. In contrast to former investigations, period and damping of the Earth's free wobble (Chandler wobble) are generated by the gyro from geometrical and rheological parameters. Numerical results for polar motion in the time domain demonstrate that damping exists without explicit excitation but vanishes when regarding atmospheric and oceanic angular momentum. Simulated polar motion for the period from 1975 to 1994 forced by consistent atmospheric and oceanic angular momentum shows significant correlation with geodetic observations which indicates that the free gyroscopic model DyMEG is able to reproduce realistic variations of the Earth's rotation. Spectral analyses of both atmospheric and oceanic excitations give no hint for increased power in the Chandler frequency band as it was stated for the maintenance of the Chandler wobble in recent research studies. Thus, stochastic signals in the climate dynamics as caused by both the weather and oceanic mass redistributions are found to be a sufficient source to maintain the amplitude of the Earth's free wobble by resonant interaction.

Book excerpt: Analysis of nonseasonal polar motion excitation and atmospheric mass equatorial angular momentum (EAM) over land for the period 1980-1993 reveals a clear pattern of high power and correlation during the northern hemisphere (NH) winter followed by low power and correlation during the NH summer. During the southern hemisphere winter there is significant correlation between the atmospheric EAM over midlatitude southern oceans and polar motion excitation indicating the existence of a dynamic atmosphere-ocean excitation. The atmospheric excitation power is too small to explain the large correlation during the NH winter. The momentum of wind probably accounts for the deficit in power. The implication of these results is that there are two main excitation sources each dominant at different seasons. Atmospheric mass redistribution over land forces polar motion during the NH winter, and a dynamic atmosphere-ocean response is important during the SH winter. The Chandler wobble frequency F and quality factor Q are estimated by least squares using polar motion data in combination with proxy excitations derived from atmospheric data. Monte Carlo tests show that this approach can provide useful improvements over traditional maximum likelihood methods, which use only observed polar motion. With less than a decade of good simultaneous polar motion and atmospheric data there is no new information about Q, but 90% confidence intervals for F are near ±0.004 cycles per year (cpy), making them comparable to maximum likelihood results based on nearly a century of historical polar motion data. Using a proxy excitation constructed from a linear combination of atmospheric EAM over land and SH ocean, the estimate of F is near 0.831 cpy (a period of 439.5 days), which is significantly different from the maximum likelihood value near 0.843 cpy (433 days). This difference can be understood in light of the assumptions underlying the two methods.
