Book Synopsis Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Large Jet Multiplicities and Missing Transverse Momentum with ATLAS Using by :
Download or read book Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Large Jet Multiplicities and Missing Transverse Momentum with ATLAS Using written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported of a search for new phenomena, such as supersymmetric particle production, that could be observed in high-energy proton–proton collisions. Events with large numbers of jets, together with missing transverse momentum from unobserved particles, are selected. The data analysed were recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2015 using the 13 TeV centre-of-mass proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb-1. The search selected events with various jet multiplicities from ≥7 to ≥10 jets, and with various b-jet multiplicity requirements to enhance sensitivity. Furthermore, no excess above Standard Model expectations is observed. The results are interpreted within two supersymmetry models, where gluino masses up to 1400 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, significantly extending previous limits.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation results are presented from a search for the pair production of heavy colored particles (gluinos, squarks) in R-parity conserving supersymmetric models, in which the lightest supersymmetric particle is a stable and neutral object. The search was performed for events with at least two tau leptons, two highly energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in the final state on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The data sample was collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011, and it corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5fb -1. The tau isolation variable was optimized for this search. The number of events corresponding to standard model processes in the final selection was estimated to be 7.49 plus - minus 0.74 using background estimation techniques based on data. Nine observed events are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction, and exclusion limits on gluino mass are obtained in the context of supersymmetric models at the 95% confidence level. Book Synopsis A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector by : Lesya Horyn

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical development of the Standard Model in the 1960s and 1970s has led to the discovery of its missing piece, the Higgs boson, at the ATLAS experiment (together with its sister experiment, CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012. In order to solve the problem of large quantum corrections to the leading expansion of the Higgs boson mass, additional symmetries need to be added to the Standard Model. A possible solution to this problem of Higgs mass quantum corrections is the theory of Supersymmetry, which includes partners to each Standard Model particle, such as gluinos, squarks, and the lightest supersymmetric particle. This dissertation describes a search for pair-produced gluinos, where each gluino decays via a top squark or a bottom squark to the lightest supersymmetric particle (a neutralino). Events which contain a large jet multiplicity in the final state (i.e. at least four jets of which at least three must be b-jets), and large amounts of missing transverse energy, are obtained for further studies. The dataset used for this search includes 139 fb^−1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the ATLAS experiment between 2015 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV. No significant excess is observed in data above the Standard Model backgrounds, and gluino masses up to 2.3 TeV for both the Gtt and the Gbb models are excluded at a 95% confidence level. This dissertation also contains an overview of, and the author's work on, the data quality monitoring of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter during 2017 data taking.
Book Synopsis A Search for Supersymmetry in Events with Jets and Missing Momentum Using Data Collected by the CMS Detector at 13 TeV by : Sam Daniel Mullin

This book was released on 2016 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As successful as the Standard Model of particle physics has been it still has several major shortcomings which range from unanswered theoretical questions to a lack of any explanation for observed phenomena such as dark matter. One proposed theory for physics beyond the Standard Model which provides solutions for some of these issues is supersymmetry. This dissertation presents a search for supersymmetry using 2.3 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data. This data was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC during 2015. This search focuses on top squark pair production where the produced stops both decay to an all hadronic final state. These decays are characterized by multiple jets and missing transverse momentum. A baseline search region is defined to be sensitive to signal processes which occur at rates many orders of magnitude lower than Standard Model processes. The sensitivity to various signal models is improved by dividing this baseline region into distinct categories. Events with an unreconstructed lepton from leptonic W boson decays constitute the primary background. There are also significant contributions from events where a Z boson decays invisibly to neutrinos especially in bins with higher missing transverse momentum. Events with multijet production where one jet has been severely mis-measured as well as those with a pair of top quarks and an invisibly decaying Z boson also have a small presence in the search region. The contributions from these processes to the search region is estimated using data control regions. No statistically significant deviations from the predicted background yields are observed. The results are interpreted in terms of exclusion limits using the Simplified Model Spectrum framework. Stop and neutralino masses are probed up to 780 GeV and 260 GeV respectively.
