Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea urchins are a major component of marine environments found throughout the world's oceans. A major model for research in developmental biology, they are also of major economic importance in many regions and interest in their management and aquaculture has increased greatly in recent years. This book provides a synthesis of biological and ecological characteristics of sea urchins that are of basic scientific interest and also essential for effective fisheries management and aquaculture. General chapters consider characteristics of sea urchins as a whole. In addition, specific chapters are devoted to the ecology of 17 species that are of major commercial interest and ecological importance.Features include: • A synthesis of what is known about the basic biological characteristics of the sea urchin, useful for the direction of future research. • Case histories of 17 species that illustrate their ecological role in a variety of environments. • With the catastrophic decline in fisheries resulting primarily from over-fishing, it is essential that the populations be managed effectively and that aquaculture be developed. This book provides knowledge of the biology and ecology of the commercially important sea urchins that will contribute to these goals. • The only book available in present literature devoted to sea urchins. With this new title experts provide a broad synthetic treatment and in depth analysis of the biology and ecology of sea urchins from around the world, designed to provide an understanding of the group and the basis for fisheries management and aquaculture.

Book excerpt: "Sea urchins are harvested worldwide, the majority destined for the Japanese market. Japan is by far the world's largest importer and consumer of sea urchin roe. In 2002, Japan imported about 18,525 metric tons (mt) of live sea urchins and sea urchin roe valued at about 247 million dollars, an increase of more than ten-fold in volume and 12-fold in value from 1975. Much of this increase was due to good demand, decreased domestic harvest, and consequent rise in price for sea urchin roe. Fresh sea urchin roe was the dominant product imported into Japan, representing as much as 49 percent in value in 2002. The United States has become the largest supplier of fresh roe to Japan, providing over 45 percent in value and 39 percent in volume of the total. Differences in peak fishing seasons in Japan (spring through summer) and the United States (fall through spring) have benefitted U.S. exporters in marketing sea urchin roe to Japan. Japan was the world's largest harvester of sea urchins until 1984. Since 1987, Japanese harvests have declined steadily due mainly to declining stock abundance. The harvest in 2002 of 13,000 mt was less than half of the record high landings which occurred in 1969. From 1987 to 2001, landings in the United States have exceeded Japanese landings. In 2001, sea urchins were harvested in six states: Alaska (1,166 mt), Washington (344 mt), Oregon (571 mt), California (5,951 mt), Maine (4,491 mt), and Rhode Island (0.1 mt). Most fresh sea urchin roe are sold through auction at the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market. Although quality of roe is the most important factor in determining prices, total supply (domestic and imported roe) is also significant. In 2002, the highest price for imported roe occurred in January. High prices for Japanese roe occurred in January and September, reflecting the low availability of roe during these months. Japan regulates imports of sea urchin products with import tariffs. As the United States and Japan are signatories to the World Trade Organization (WTO), WTO tariffs apply to U.S. exports of sea urchin products: 7 percent for fresh, frozen, or salted sea urchin roe, and 10 percent for prepared or preserved products, including those in airtight containers. There is no tariff for live sea urchins. Tariff rates are calculated as a percentage of total cost, including insurance and freight. Sea urchin roe shipped from Los Angeles is considered to be the best in Japan's import market. The future market for sales of U.S. sea urchins to Japan depends to a large extent on Japanese sea urchin harvest. Because domestic harvest is not likely to increase in the short term, increased export of U.S. sea urchins and sea urchin roe has significant potential."--Executive summary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the four hundred thousand years that humanity has been collecting fossils, sea urchin fossils, or echinoids, have continually been among the most prized, from the Paleolithic era, when they decorated flint axes, to today, when paleobiologists study them for clues to the earth’s history. In The Star-Crossed Stone, Kenneth J. McNamara, an expert on fossil echinoids, takes readers on an incredible fossil hunt, with stops in history, paleontology, folklore, mythology, art, religion, and much more. Beginning with prehistoric times, when urchin fossils were used as jewelry, McNamara reveals how the fossil crept into the religious and cultural lives of societies around the world—the roots of the familiar five-pointed star, for example, can be traced to the pattern found on urchins. But McNamara’s vision is even broader than that: using our knowledge of early habits of fossil collecting, he explores the evolution of the human mind itself, drawing striking conclusions about humanity’s earliest appreciation of beauty and the first stirrings of artistic expression. Along the way, the fossil becomes a nexus through which we meet brilliant eccentrics and visionary archaeologists and develop new insights into topics as seemingly disparate as hieroglyphics, Beowulf, and even church organs. An idiosyncratic celebration of science, nature, and human ingenuity, The Star-Crossed Stone is as charming and unforgettable as the fossil at its heart.

Their spines can be long or short and can cause great injury in their own right. In addition, some sea urchins’ spines are venomous. Divers are familiar with how to deal with a sea urchin sting, and readers will be, too. From why sea urchins sting to the rest of their body structures, this volume’s science content gives a great overview of this fascinating creature. Full-color photographs take readers into the ocean to see sea urchins up close—but not close enough that they’ll get stung.

Book excerpt: Sea urchins play a key role in marine ecosystems, controlling through its grazing activity the dynamic, structure and composition of seaweed and sea grasses. Moreover, it is a crucial component of the food web, as prey for fishes and other marine animals. Due to its sedentary habits and sensitivity to pollutants, adult sea urchin has been used in several studies as a biological-biochemical indicator of local pollution. This book provides several topics on sea urchins. It discusses the phenotypic variation and resilience in sea urchin morphogenesis; response of sea urchins to environmental stress; nonparametric regression applied to sea urchin growth; and sea urchin immune systems.

Book excerpt: This fully revised and expanded edition of Sea Urchins provides a wide-ranging understanding of the biology and ecology of this key component of the world's oceans. Coverage includes reproduction, metabolism, endocrinology, larval ecology, growth, digestion, carotenoids, disease and nutrition. Other chapters consider the ecology of individual species that are of major importance ecologically and economically, including species from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa. In addition, six new contributions in areas such as immunology, digestive systems and community ecology inform readers on key recent developments and insights from the literature.Sea urchins are ecologically important and often greatly affect marine communities. Because they have an excellent fossil record, they are also of interest to paleontologists. Research on sea urchins has increased in recent years, stimulated first by recognition of their ecological importance and subsequently their economic importance. Scientists around the world are actively investigating their potential for aquaculture and fisheries, and their value as model systems for investigations in developmental biology continues to increase. - Continues the series "Developments in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science" with a newly revised volume - Collects and synthesizes the state of knowledge of sea urchin biology and ecology - Expanded from previous edition to include non-edible species, providing the needed basis for broader evolutionary understanding of sea urchins
