Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism In The New Testament In this thorough and well-documented study of the sacrament of Holy Baptism, G.R. Beasley-Murray presents a critical defense of the doctrine of believers' baptism on the basis of the New Testament evidences. The author--one of the leading New Testament scholars in England--is himself a Baptist; but his discussion transcends denominatioal lines. Beasley-Murray begins by discussing various rites that precede Christian baptism historically, and analyzes the relationship between these earlier rites and baptism. From these antecedents--Old Testament ritual washings, Jewish proselyte baptism, the lustrations practiced at Qumran, and the baptism of John the Baptist--the author proceeds to the foundations of Christian baptism in the career of Jesus, its emergence as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and its development in the New Testament epistolary literature. In his consideration of the doctrine of Christian baptism as ariculated in the New Testament, Beasley-Murray focuses his attention on the necessity of baptism and its relationship to grace, faith, the Spirit, the church, ethics, and hope. A careful examination of the rise and significance of infant baptism follows, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography and several indices.

This book was released on with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophet Brigham Young taught the restored gospel of Jesus Christ in a basic, practical way that gave inspiration and hope to the Saints struggling to build a home in the wilderness. Though more than a century has now passed, his words are still fresh and appropriate for us today as we continue the work of building the kingdom of God. President Young declared that as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we possess the “doctrine of life and salvation for all the honest-in-heart” (DBY, 7). He promised that those who receive the gospel in their hearts will have awakened “within them a desire to know and understand the things of God more than they ever did before in their lives” and will begin to “inquire, read and search and when they go to their Father in the name of Jesus he will not leave them without a witness” (DBY, 450). This book reflects the desire of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to deepen the doctrinal understanding of Church members and to awaken within them a greater desire to know the things of God. It will inspire and motivate individuals, priesthood quorums, and Relief Society classes to inquire, read, search, and then go to their Father in Heaven for a witness of the truth of these teachings. Each chapter contains two sections—“Teachings of Brigham Young” and “Suggestions for Study.” The first section consists of extracts from Brigham Young’s sermons to the early Saints. Each statement has been referenced, and the original spelling and punctuation have been preserved; however, the sources cited will not be readily available to most members. These original sources are not necessary to have in order to effectively study or teach from this book. Members need not purchase additional references and commentaries to study or teach these chapters. The text provided in this book, accompanied by the scriptures, is sufficient for instruction. Members should prayerfully read and study President Young’s teachings in order to gain new insights into gospel principles and discover how those principles apply to their everyday lives. By faithfully and prayerfully studying these selections, Latter-day Saints will have a greater understanding of gospel principles and will more fully appreciate the profound and inspired teachings of this great prophet. The second section of each chapter offers a series of questions that will encourage thoughtful contemplation, personal application, and discussion of President Young’s teachings. Members should refer to and carefully reread his words on the principle being discussed. Deep and prayerful study of these teachings will inspire members to greater personal commitment and will help them resolve to follow the teachings of the Savior, Jesus Christ. If individuals and families prayerfully follow the principles in this book, they will be blessed and inspired to greater dedication and spirituality, as were the early Saints who heard these words directly from the lips of the “Lion of the Lord” (HC, 7:434)—the prophet, seer, and revelator, President Brigham Young.

Book excerpt: The two things that the church of Christ is known for by those who are not members are the fact that we don't use instruments of music in our worship, and we require all to be baptized by immersion. Baptism is not a modern religious invention, it has a history as long as Christianity itself and in this lesson, I'd like to review that with you.

Ideal as an aide to parents, Sunday school teachers, and children's ministry directors, this book teaches children a number of lessons concerning baptism, such as: Why we get baptized (to show others we have joined God's family) How someone is baptized, and who may baptize them How to use baptism as an opportunity to share the faith with others But most importantly, this wordbook presents children with the question of whether or not they are in fact ready to be baptized. Designed especially for kids in grades 2-5, activities include a crossword puzzle, word search, coloring page, quiz, and "Certificate of Spiritual Birth." These activities, paired with engaging illustrations and simple explanations, will help your children truly understand the gift of baptism. * This book is part of The Children’s Wordbook series, by Richard Todd, and is most beneficial when used alongside the wordbooks, which cover salvation, baptism, communion, giving, and church. They are great resources for parents and teachers who want to teach children of these fundamental Christian doctrines.

What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions. Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Book excerpt: I want to write about one of the two ordinances the Lord Jesus left and instructed the church to follow and preserve. One of His ordinances is Holy Communion. Holy Communion contains two symbolic elements. The bread symbolic of His body causing us to remember Him (Luk 22:19). The juice/wine symbolic of His blood causing us to realize we are in the New Covenant (Luk 22:20). Most Christ followers can explain and pass this ordinance on to their children and can well tell anyone the meanings of Communion because of these two elements. The elements themselves teach and explain the ordinance plus help us hold onto the meaning. The ordinance I want to write about is water baptism. We know water baptism involves water, but most Christians are not positive what the water symbolizes and teaches. They don't know what is to happen when water baptized. Also, there's confusion about how much water to use. Should we sprinkle, pour water on a person's head, or dunk the person in water? Today there's tremendous uncertainty and vagueness about the necessity and purpose of water baptism. Many Christ followers are ill-informed about water baptism's importance, so they are not water baptized. I fear many people reading have not been water baptized according to the Scriptures. Is there a proper way to water baptize a person? If so, what is it? Is it important to experience proper water baptism? Did you believe certain blessings come with water baptisms? Yes, there are specific blessings associated with water baptism, and the Lord wants you to have them all.Water Baptism is a most special part of the life of a believer. I designed this book to help us understand water baptism and why it is special. The book's purpose is to answer questions you have and develop understanding, belief, and faith in water baptism. Over years of study, ministry, and performing baptisms I learned people have questions about water baptism. A problem is they don't know what to ask. People feel they should experience baptism because, well, that's what they're supposed to do, but feel foolish asking questions. They feel they should know what water baptism is about. You get dunked, sprinkled, or somebody pours water on your head, right? No, there is so much more to know. The problem is no one's taught them. This should not be. Often people experienced water baptism, but no change occurred. So, another question occurs. "Did I experience baptism, or did I only get wet?" I hope to answer all your questions and help you. By the end of this book, you will understand water baptism. I pray what you learn stirs you, and you receive baptism if you have not. If you have, experiencing baptism again is a possibility. I want you comfortable with water baptism and know what is happening or happened. I want to answer the question "Why shouldn't I be baptized?" For thirty-one years I was the lead pastor and primary teaching pastor in a church. I've studied the Scriptures and the Bible going on fifty years now. If I'm not cautious, I'll think people know more about the Scriptures than they do. I need to remember if you are reading this book, you likely know little about the Scriptures. You want to know about water baptism and not become a theologian. I will try to keep it as clear as I can but give you as much information as possible. To understand water baptism we will need to do some Greek word studies, etc., but I promise I'll only do what is necessary. I wrote a short book about baptism years ago called "What Doth Hinder Me To Be Baptized." Its title is from the same passage of Scripture I titled this book. I used the King James English in the first book. I used the New International Version for this book's title. My point is I've included "What Doth Hinder Me to Be Baptized" at the end of this book. Several of the points I say again, but the points are worth repeating if they help someone.

Book excerpt: The Freedom of the Christian was Martin Luther's first public defense of the doctrine of justification by grace through faith on account of Christ alone. Luther's explosive rediscovery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ shattered the Church of Rome's foundation of works, which considered good works a part of salvation instead of a result of it. Here, Luther constructed a rich theology that relies on the full power of the Gospel, which not only grants saving faith but also nurtures that faith through good works done in the freest service. This new abridged translation from Adam Francisco, featuring a brief essay from Scott Keith, leaves no doubt that the Christian, secure in Christ, is truly free—free from sin, death, and the devil, and free to serve their neighbor.
