Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Life and Poetry Glimpses of the early life of the people may be had through consideration of their homes. Shelter from weather, security from foes, contiguity to fishing-grounds or beds of shell-fish, the existence of cover for the constant warfare on the forest monsters, the vicinity of quarries for weapons, guided the selection of the site of what not infrequently in far later days became perhaps a populous and important city. The folks who lived so are the objects of wildest conjecture. We know what they lived on. and with what instruments they slew; but little more, except that they must have frequently endured wretched misery. The able hunter, or the strong man with a weapon, either fashioned by himself or wrung from the grip of some other, alone could reckon on being fit to secure the best shelter and the skins required for a measure of comfort and clothing. Vet they were not utterly brutes. From some of the caves have been recovered what were doubtless masterpieces of primitive art, giving us a glimpse of our tawny prehistoric hunter, in his smoky home, by the light of his flickering fire, scratching, on antlers and tusks of deer and mammoth elephant, figures of beasts of the chase, with lines of real beauty in them. These are proofs that even in Cimmerian darkness, light, beauty-seeking, had arisen for some. Life must have been a sort of sleepless grappling scuffle with the shadows of fear that inhabited low marsh and cavern, lake and forest, and above all, with man's persistent enemies - disease and man himself, his fellow-creature and continual foe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Poets: Recent and Living In submitting a new edition of Recent and Living Scottish Poets to the favour of the public, the author desires to recapitulate what he said in the preface to the former edition, - namely, that the greater portion of the work appeared first as a series of brief Biographical Sketches in the newspaper press during the year 1880. These Sketches, with emendations and additions, were issued in book form early in the following year. The work having gone out of print almost immediately on publication, he now has the pleasure of issuing an augmented and thoroughly revised edition, which, he hopes, may meet with similar success. Many new names have been added, and the whole work has been thoroughly sifted and re-arranged with a view to completeness without indiscriminate superfluity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leading Poets of Scotland From Early Times: Illustrated Some of the sketches are brief, and some of the metrical extracts are of necessity short, or the volume would have grown far beyond the dimensions originally purposed. But we venture to believe the biographies will be found reliable, and the poems such as will offer a fair sample of the authors' style and quality. A popular edition of the Poets of Scotland was not to be had in a cheap form when this edition was first advertised, but two or three have since been announced. Literature has made rapid progress during the past forty or fifty years, and to be um acquainted with the lives and writings of our poets is now considered almost a culpable fault. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Heath and Prairie: Scottish and American Poems Spey. My youthful mind was keenly sensible of the sublimity of the northern hills, and the varied charms of vale and river. When ten years old I framed my first verses, which I carefully concealed from View. Even at that early age I fully expected to leave my native land, and I often found myself wistfully gazing on the scenes of beauty round me, as on that which I might never see again. So when the ocean rolled between them and me I found the scenes of childhood were imprinted on my memory - that absence made the heart grow fonder. Constant association with brother Scots served to keep alive in me the patriotic ardor and drew from my pen many of the poems which have appeared in Scottish and American publications. They have all been composed during hours of labor, to the accompani ment of the clang of hammer and the whirr of belt and wheel. Now, in response to the wishes of many friends, I have made a selection of those which pleased me best, with many others not hitherto printed. Besides those of special interest to British Americans, there. Are many which present my impres sions of life in a Western city. American Scots are so patriotic that they need little incentive to be true to'the traditions of their native land; and men are so learned now that it is hard to bring a smile to their face; but if these simple verses cause a thrill of fond remembrance in an exiled heart, or beguile a weary hour, they shall not have been written in vain.
