Book excerpt: JIMMY IS UNEMPLOYED AND DIRECTIONLESS, and has been roped into coaching the local junior soccer team. Peter is a struggling small businessman, trying to grow his business and find time for his family. Newly single soccer mum Elizabeth is looking for a way to stay at home, earn an income and still have time to raise her son. David is a career high-flyer on the verge of crashing and burning; his approach to leadership has put his career under threat, and makes him a poor role model for his son. Scores on the Board brings together these engaging characters through the journey of an under 11s soccer team -- the Southside Vikings. Using the 5-part Scores on the BoardTM system, Jimmy transforms the Vikings from the easybeats of the competition into an enthusiastic and committed team of rapidly improving players. Along the way, Jimmy and parents Peter, Elizabeth and David also learn how to transform their careers and perspectives on life. Incorporating the latest research from Harvard Business School, the field of neuroscience and practices from some of the world's most successful professional sports and business teams, Scores on the BoardTM is a simple, effective system that delivers dramatic results when applied to pursuing goals in personal development, team-building or business management. This fast-paced, entertaining story will have you cheering for the Southside Vikings and their inspiring vision of what it means to be a winner -- regardless of what the scoreboard says. With this game plan, Scores on the BoardTM may be the best investment you ever make.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leadership Partnership is volume two in the Museum Trustee Association’s Templates for Trustees series. The book and customizable web-based templates feature tools that help boards to consider their options, identify their priorities, and plan their actions at this critical moment in a museum’s life cycle. In addition to the manual and on-line website, purchasers have access to the ongoing assistance of MTA staff. As nonprofit management becomes more challenging, thinking about the relationship between the board and the director is evolving. The bright line between the board’s responsibility for policy and the staff’s responsibility for management is blurring. The Leadership Partnership explores and supports this critical partnership between the executive director and the board and helps leadership develop strategies and approaches appropriate for the individual institution. A series of online surveys allows board members to look at their own performance, that of the board as a whole and that of the executive director across ten critical areas of museum management: mission, vision and strategy; professional development, board operations, individual relationships, oversight, finances and fundraising, collections, facilities, and public engagement. The final template guides users into turning the findings from the surveys into a leadership plan, to be presented and discussed with the board.

Book excerpt: "Corporate reform" is not reform at all. Instead, it is the systematic destruction of the foundational American institution of public education. The primary motivation behind this destruction is greed. Public education in America is worth almost a trillion dollars a year. Whereas American public education is a democratic institution, its destruction is being choreographed by a few wealthy, well-positioned individuals and organizations. This book investigates and exposes the handful of people and institutions that are often working together to become the driving force behind destroying the community public school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computerized assessment offers many opportunities for innovations in measurement. In contrast to static paper-and-pencil instruments, computerized assessment can capitalize on the dynamic capabilities of the computer. For example, the difficulty of administered items can be adopted to the ability of the examinee, thus eliminating items that are too hard or too easy. Multimedia computers provide the opportunity to revolutionize assessment. Stereo sound, animation, and full-motion video can be incorporated into assessment tools and aid in the measurement of individual differences ranging from musical skills to interpersonal abilities. Innovations in Computerized Assessment presents the experiences of leading researchers in computerized assessment. The book places particular emphasis on the dilemmas that were faced by the researchers. Questions addressed include: * What problems did they confront? * What were the pros and cons of various options? * How were dilemmas resolved? * Were the solutions good ones?

This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research has provided insights into the area of look-up behaviour, in particular, look-up strategies. A coding scheme of 51 executive, cognitive and metacognitive operations has been derived from the think-aloud data. On the basis of the codes, seven types of strategies were identified: Ignoring, Assuming, Minimizing, Checking, Paraphrasing, Stretching, and Maximizing. The results also indicated that the look-up strategies preferred one part (either L1 translation equivalents or L2 definitions) rather than both parts (L1 translation equivalents and L2 definitions) of the bilingualised entries. Four other factors i.e. language preference, language proficiency, target words and L2 definitions could also influence the use of the bilingualised entries in various degrees. Learners were shown to have common as well as different patterns of strategy use. Most learners attempted a variety of strategies while one learner repeatedly utilized one type of strategy. The frequency of strategy use for individual learners usually fluctuated when different types of strategies were used. Although a wide variety of strategies were used, not every strategy was used frequently. The most frequently used strategy was maximizing, which was used in 112 look-ups out of a total of 264. It appears that the learners repeatedly used strategies they are familiar with or they think are effective, and do not spontaneously try other strategies that they may know and that may be effective.
