Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Management and Labor The book here presented is based upon an investigation of scientific management in its relations to labor, made by the writer for the United States Commission on Industrial Relations. The investigation involved a study of scientific management shops designated, in the main, by Mr. Frederick W. Taylor, Mr. H. L. Gantt and Mr. Harrington Emerson, leaders of the movement. In this shop study, the investigator was assisted by Mr. Robert G. Valentine, Industrial Counselor, appointed by the Commission to represent employing management, and Mr. John P. Frey, Editor of the "International Molders' Journal," similarly appointed to represent labor. Both Mr. Valentine and Mr. Frey were in close touch with the writer during the course of the investigation and the preparation of the report to the Commission, and both attached their signatures to that document as well as to the conclusions which were presented with it. This monograph has also received their unqualified approval. The discussion which follows is for the most part an attempt to test Mr. Taylor's claims respecting scientific management in its relations to labor, the claims of Mr. Gantt and Mr. Emerson being considered only in so far as they differ from those of Mr. Taylor. Justification for this mode of procedure is clearly set forth in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management and the Worker This book and its two companion volumes are designed to present a complete picture of the common problems that arise in handling human relations in any business, large or small. The method of treatment throughout is the one that seems logically suggested by the nature of the problem itself. Theory has been the approach in very many earlier volumes treating the same question, but the relations between employers and employees are today so practical, the points ordinarily at issue between them have been defined so often and so completely, and so much experience has accumulated in handling the problems, that the only satisfactory treatment today seems to be an analysis of methods actually being used and proving successful. This book is designed primarily for those who face the problems of employee management. Business today is a huge laboratory in which numerous intensely interesting industrial experiments are being tried. Some of these experiments are still in too early a stage to determine how well they may succeed, or whether they will succeed at all. Only in two or three instances have these been touched on in the present volume. There are many other plans, however, that have been thoroughly tried and their success proved by results. The bulk of this volume and its companion titles are made up of descriptions of the methods used in these concerns. Book excerpt: The Principles of Scientific Management Frederick Winslow Taylor The cheapening of any article in common use almost immediately results in a largely increased demand for that article. Take the case of shoes, for instance. The introduction of machinery for doing every element of the work which was formerly done by hand has resulted in making shoes at a fraction of their former labor cost, and in selling them so cheap that now almost every man, woman, and child in the working-classes buys one or two pairs of shoes per year, and wears shoes all the time, whereas formerly each workman bought perhaps one pair of shoes every five years, and went barefoot most of the time, wearing shoes only as a luxury or as a matter of the sternest necessity. In spite of the enormously increased output of shoes per workman, which has come with shoe machinery, the demand for shoes has so increased that there are relatively more men working in the shoe industry now than ever before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cost Keeping and Scientific Management This book is written for jobbing shops and small manufacturing plants where accurate cost keeping and the principles of good management have received but little attention. It is hoped that it will not be without interest to the officials of large manufacturing establishments and shipbuilding plants. Many owners and manager desire to improve the cost system, but are deterred by the belief that this cannot be done without the aid of expert accountants who will devise an elaborate system which will require a large clerical force to maintain. The methods which I have outlined are simple and require but little clerical labor. Any manager can adapt this system to meet the requirements of his work. The efficiency of a large plant under my supervision has been greatly improved by adopting and following the principles of management advocated by Mr. Fred W. Taylor. I believe that in thousands of shops marked improvement will be made if these principles are followed. The methods described in the chapters devoted to management should be of assistance to the manager who wishes to take the first steps towards Scientific Management. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems, at first glance, like an obvious step to take to improve industrial productivity: one should simply watch workers at work in order to learn how they actually do their jobs. But American engineer FREDERICK WINSLOW TAYLOR (1856-1915) broke new ground with this 1919 essay, in which he applied the rigors of scientific observation to such labor as shoveling and bricklayer in order to streamline their work... and bring a sense of logic and practicality to the management of that work. This highly influential book, must-reading for anyone seeking to understand modern management practices, puts lie to such misconceptions that making industrial processes more efficient increases unemployment and that shorter workdays decrease productivity. And it laid the foundations for the discipline of management to be studied, taught, and applied with methodical precision.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Scientific Management AN element of risk attaches to any effort to appraise a movement while that movement is still in its earlier and more enthusiastic stages, especially when the appraisal is made by one who is (however modestly) a participant in it. The attempt is justified only by the accuracy with which facts are presented and by the justice and fairness of the inferences and conclusions drawn. In this book I have tried to give only facts which can be verified and to make infer emees with all due conservatism. The result is Offered for what it may be worth. There is some consolation in the thought that a later genera tion may count it an original, or at least con temporary, source. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense in Labor Management In this book I have tried to bring into clear definition the more important relations between employers and employees, with an appraisement of methods proved successful in harmonizing them. My function has been that of a reporter, in large part, for the ideals and policies expressed herein are not impractical ideals or policies of mere theory. I have gone to experienced managers for them. My task has been one of selection and formulation. Hence, my debts to broad-thinking business men from coast to coast are so numerous that I should be unfair to all if I singled out any for special mention. I must not fail, however, to record my deep satisfaction and gratefulness for the opportunities afforded through my association with the A. W. Shaw Company, for the preparation of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Working Conditions, Wages and Profits NO management question is more intimate than how far the employer ought to go in providing for the physical, social, and intellectual well-being of employees; no question of any sort is the source of more con icts between employers and employees than wages; and the measurement of the efficiency of labor in cost terms is the final test that the managers of a company can apply to a labor policy. These three angles of the labor problem are presented in the two companion volumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A dense, challenging and important book.' Philip French Observer 'At the very least, this blockbuster is probably the best single volume history of Hollywood we're likely to get for a very long time.' Paul Kerr City Limits 'Persuasively argued, the book is also packed with facts, figures and photographs.' Nigel Andrews Financial Times Acclaimed for their breakthrough approach, Bordwell, Staiger and Thompson analyze the basic conditions of American film-making as a historical institution and consider to what extent Hollywood film production constitutes a systematic enterprise, in both its style and its business operations. Despite differences of director, genre or studio, most Hollywood films operate within a set of shared assumptions about how a film should look and sound. Such assumptions are neither natural nor inevitable; but because classical-style films have been the type most widely seen, they have come to be accepted as the 'norm' of film-making and viewing. The authors show how these classical conventions were formulated and standardized, and how they responded to the arrival of sound, colour, widescreen ratios and stereophonic sound. They argue that each new technological development has served a function within an existing narrational system. The authors also examine how the Hollywood cinema standardized the film-making process itself. They describe how, over the course of its history, Hollywood developed distinct modes of production in a constant search for maximum efficiency, predictability and novelty. Set apart by its combination of theoretical analysis and empirical evidence, this book is the standard work on the classical Hollywood cinema style of film-making from the silent era to the 1960s. Now available in paperback, it is a 'must' for film students, lecturers and all those seriously interested in the development of the film industry.
