Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Crary's Techniques of the Observer provides a dramatically new perspective on the visual culture of the nineteenth century, reassessing problems of both visual modernism and social modernity. This analysis of the historical formation of the observer is a compelling account of the prehistory of the society of the spectacle. In Techniques of the Observer Jonathan Crary provides a dramatically new perspective on the visual culture of the nineteenth century, reassessing problems of both visual modernism and social modernity. Inverting conventional approaches, Crary considers the problem of visuality not through the study of art works and images, but by analyzing the historical construction of the observer. He insists that the problems of vision are inseparable from the operation of social power and examines how, beginning in the 1820s, the observer became the site of new discourses and practices that situated vision within the body as a physiological event. Alongside the sudden appearance of physiological optics, Crary points out, theories and models of "subjective vision" were developed that gave the observer a new autonomy and productivity while simultaneously allowing new forms of control and standardization of vision. Crary examines a range of diverse work in philosophy, in the empirical sciences, and in the elements of an emerging mass visual culture. He discusses at length the significance of optical apparatuses such as the stereoscope and of precinematic devices, detailing how they were the product of new physiological knowledge. He also shows how these forms of mass culture, usually labeled as "realist," were in fact based on abstract models of vision, and he suggests that mimetic or perspectival notions of vision and representation were initially abandoned in the first half of the nineteenth century within a variety of powerful institutions and discourses, well before the modernist painting of the 1870s and 1880s.

Book excerpt: The Observer Effect is a term used in quantum physics to describe the effect an observer has in the quantum field, which in this book is the universe at large. An observer is a measuring device, which equates to your beliefs. I'm going to show you how, as an observer, can change the way you perceive things to effect a change in the things you perceive. You will find the Golden Key, a term coined by ancients to unlock the most powerful door known to humans. The term is, however, a metaphor; inside you exists one key place you can instantly unlock with nothing more than believing it is there. Few realise this, and live their lives as though reality is separate from them, out of their personal control. Nothing could be further from the truth. You are in a position to observe reality in any way you desire by simply harnessing the emotions you most want and literally creating a new, better reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book both introduces the philosophy of science through examination of the occult and examines the occult rigorously enough to raise central issues in the philosophy of science. Placed in the context of the occult, philosophy of science issues become immediately understandable and forcefully compelling. Divergent views on astrology, parapsychology, and quantum mechanics mysticism emphasize topics standard to the philosophy of science. Such issues as confirmation and selection for testing, causality and time, explanation and the nature of scientific laws, the status of theoretical entities, the problem of demarcation, theory and observation, and science and values are discussed. Significantly revised, this second edition presents an entirely new section of quantum mechanics and mysticism including instructions from N. David Mermin for constructing a device which dramatically illustrates the genuinely puzzling phenomena of quantum mechanics. A more complete and current review of research on astrology has been included in this new edition, and the section on the problem of demarcation has been broadened.

Book excerpt: AutoRicerca is a journal whose mission is to publish writings of value on the topic of inner research (but not only). This nineteenth issue of AutoRicerca is entirely dedicated to the topic of quantum physics, with three essays by Massimiliano Sassoli de Bianchi. The first is an updated and expanded edition of a booklet that the author published in 2013, entitled "Observer Effect". The second is the "transliteration" of a video that the author published in 2012, on the subject of the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and quantum non-spatiality. Finally, the third is a short article in which the possibility of spontaneous self-teleportation of a human body is explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches the God-question in a different way than normal: from the perspective of psychotherapy. In a world of machine intelligence, the key idea is an analogy of being between human personhood and divine personhood as the only satisfactory way of showing that our inner conscious awareness (nourished by the validation of the self) is responded to in ultimate terms. It aims to extrapolate "from below," from our psychological experience to asking ultimate questions, drawing lines between: -Observation in quantum physics -The maternal gaze -Recognition in social worlds that confer perception in place of invisibility -The power of inter-subjectivity in relational neurobiology and therapy What has to be accounted for is our sense of personhood and how that fits in with a cosmos that is at best neutral. The metaphor of a "wifi" universe is proposed but rather than a soulless device being switched on, how a human psyche comes to a sense of consciousness of its own value is the issue here. A personal God is the best explanation for the evidence of how our personhood and subject status requires correspondence. As engaging with a neutral AI entity is bound to be "soulless," the first-person perspective requires an I-thou relationship. A universe constructed from "nature" by itself or one where the ultimate is impersonal energy just does not cut it or respond adequately to what is inside us. This book offers an account of how the realm described by physics and our inner world can tie up--perhaps the only way they can!
