Book Synopsis Activities for Elementary School Social Studies by : James W. Stockard, Jr.
Download or read book Activities for Elementary School Social Studies written by James W. Stockard, Jr. and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2010-04-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Piaget, all higher-order thinking skills have their bases in activities involving concrete manipulation and observation. The third edition of this highly regarded collection of social studies activities continues to be based on the premise that children learn best through experiences and activities—learning by doing. It features new activities for each social studies category (geography, history, anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, and interdisciplinary). Three important new additions to the key elements of the easy-to-follow activity format make it easier for instructors to meet standards-based curriculum requirements: A detailed treatment of National Council of Social Studies standards addressed; specific multiple intelligences addressed (also reinforced by a multiple intelligences section in the back of the book); and useful Web site(s) for group/individual research (URLs for sites that will expand or enrich the learning experience for the activity). By engaging pupils in meaningful, worthwhile social studies activities, instructors can emphasize the processes of learning rather than the products, resulting in a richly rewarding experience for pupils and teacher alike.

Except for the first four activities, which are quick attention getters, all the activities are presented in a standard format. Each begins with an introduction, that provides a brief overview of the activity's content and the teaching strategies used. Student learning objectives are listed, as are recommendations for the subject and grade level at which the activity can be used. The time required to use the activity is given, and any materials and preparation needed are described. Step by step procedures are presented. Included are questions that can be used to stimulate discussion, probe the issue, or debrief a discussion or other activity. Finally ideas for extension and enrichment are given. In some cases, additional resources that could be used to enhance learning about the lesson topic are listed. The activities are organized into three major sections. First are starter activities that stimulate awareness about science, technology, society (STS) topics on issues and help students brainstorm, generate discussion, and explore ideas about STS issues. The following two sections present lessons designed primarily for science and social studies classes, respectively. Within each section, the lessons are grouped by common course titles. In one, the science courses used are earth science and environmental studies, life science and biology, chemistry, and physics. In the next section, the social studies courses used are world geography, world history, U.S. history, and civics and government. (Author/DK)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” -Jesus This is a book about pursuit. How God pursues people. How we pursue him. And how he uses us to pursue others. God pursued us when Jesus came into this ruined world as an agent of redemption, asking us to follow him and to become his disciples. Yet, what does Jesus actually mean by disciple? And as his disciples, what is our mission? Pastor Bill Clem masterfully answers these questions, explaining what Jesus meant when he called his followers “disciples”, and what he intended when he told us to then makedisciples. This helpful guide weaves together Scripture and real-life stories to illustrate the essential elements of Christian discipleship. Whether you’ve just become a follower of Jesus or you’ve been one for years, Disciplewill help you see that Jesus invites his people to freedom rather than mere rule keeping, and it will give you a relational framework-instead of behavioral prescriptions-for pursuing God.
