Book excerpt: School safety and security continues to be a concern in schools throughout the world as it is not a matter of if, but when a crisis will occur. There is a large segment of the population that attends schools in rural settings making preparedness in rural schools a timely topic. The purpose of this study was to examine a Midwestern rural school district to learn the perceptions of how prepared the school's staff felt they were for a crisis situation and to compare their perceptions with local emergency responders. A theoretical framework of protection-motivation theory (PMT) was used throughout the study. PMT postulates when sufficient fear exists and a reasonable probability a catastrophic event could occur, then one is motivated toward protection. It was concluded that the school district was well prepared for crisis situations they have faced, but was not prepared for disasters the school district has not faced. The rural school district has an "it won't happen here" attitude regarding safety and security and as a result, has not kept crisis plans, training, and drills updated. The last thorough update took place shortly after the Columbine school shooting and subsequently, fear of a similar attack motivated the district to update their comprehensive crisis plan at that time. As that fear has waned, so has the preparedness of the district.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to examine school resource officers’ (SROs) perceptions of school safety assigned to 12 schools within rural communities located in the Southeast region of the United States. For this study, school safety was defined as the overall safety and well-being of the school environment. The perceptions of the SROs assigned to selected schools were examined using this definition of school safety. All aspects of safety within the schools were the focus of the study and were not limited to any specific areas of emphasis. This study utilized a purposeful sampling of 12 participants from three school districts in the Southeastern region of the United States. Interviews were conducted with the participants of the study. Analyses of each participant’s interview, both within-case and cross-case, were completed Personal observations of the SROs within the setting and documents were also be gathered and utilized for this study. Results of this study indicated that SROs are dedicated to ensuring that their assigned schools are safe and secure; however, the need exists for further collaborative efforts between SROs, school administrators, teachers, students, and others to adequately address the various safety needs within schools. The analysis of the data showed the need to better clarify and communicate SROs’ roles and responsibilities to others within the schools, while also highlighting the importance of relationships between SROs and students, teachers, and administrators to further enhance school safety.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore school personnel's perceptions of school safety and security in order to better understand the lived experience of three distinct personnel groupings: Office personnel serve as gate keepers to the school builiding, teachers spend the majority of the day with students, and administrators serve as decision makers in school safety and security policies, procedures, and practices. The participants in this study were employees of a single school district in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The researcher sought out these participatns through purpose and convenience sampling. This qualitative study included interviewing, analyzing, and coding of participants' responses to interview questions specific to their experience as a member of school personnel regarding safety and security. This study was a phenomenological study addressing three research questions: (a) What is the lived experience regarding school safety and security for school employees in accordance with their opinion of safety and security as deployed and maintained within their school building?, (b) What are the school safety and security training methods that school employees perceive to be in line with best practices, and in their opinion, are trainings effective or ineffective, and why or why not? (c) Do the school employee's overall feelings of safety & security increase their perceived job satisfaction and performance? Why or why not?, Seven themes emerged from the interviews: sense of safety, training for staff and students, preferred types of training, school hardening, presence of school resource officer(s), impact on job satisfaction, and impact on job performance. Participants reported a strong sense of safety, preference for live school gun violence simulations for school safety training, appreciation for school resource officers, increased feelings of safety and security due to school hardening with the additions of security vestibules, high job satisfaction, and ability to perform their duties due to feeling safe.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to determine if there is an underlying perception of safety risk and potential violence present among the La Costa Canyon High School (LCCRS) teaching staff. This study examines and discusses the implications for schools and administrators in dealing with the challenges our society has placed on schools today. The study was designed to survey each teacher in regard to his/her perception of safety at LCCRS. The project was developed and accomplished as follows: First, research was conducted to reference other studies completed on the perceptions of teachers. Second, survey questions were created for the LCCRS teaching staff and test-piloted in a Research -EDUC 622 class at California State University, San Marcos. Content changes were made to make the survey easier to administer and answer. Third, the survey was test-piloted with the LCCRS administrative team including the athletic director, head counselor, head librarian, head testing coordinator, police officer, principal, and three assistant principals. Rere, minor structural changes were made in order to more easily administer and answer the survey. Fourth, the survey was distributed to and completed by the LCCRS teaching staff at a monthly staff meeting. Information resulting from the survey was distributed to the LCCRS Safety Committee in order to facilitate changes and improvements for the increased safety of staff and students. Results of the survey demonstrate pronounced views held by the LCCRS teaching staff of perceived violence and safety risk. Sixty-one percent of respondents perceive there to be a safety risk in various forms and as the result of differing causes.

Book excerpt: This qualitative research study investigated administrators' and teachers' perceptions of the safety strategies implemented in their school. This study also explored their perceptions of the safety training that they have received. In addition, the study examined the impact of school safety training on school climate. A researcher-designed survey, with self-selected response, Likert, and open-ended questions, was administered. In addition, a researcher-designed interview was conducted with participants who volunteered. Participants in this study included administrators and teachers in a secondary (6-12) setting. All participants are employed in a public education schoool district in Southeastern, Pennsylvania. A total of 57 participants completed the online survey. Two people volunteered to participate in an interview where they could expand on their answers. Results indicated that administrators and teachers feel safe in their current building of employment. This study found that communication was identified as a strength and a weakness in school safety training. In general, administrators and teachers feel that they are prepared for an emergency. However, they agree that there is a lack of special or "real-life" training. The results indicated that safety training and strategies have a positive effect on school climate, or no effect at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring Safe School Environments: Exploring Issues--Seeking Solutions presents research findings and information about school violence, with a focus on strategies for increasing school safety. Based on a special topical issue of Rural Special Education Quarterly, the original journal articles have been rewritten to address safe schools from the perspective of suburban and urban, as well as rural environments. Topics include the frequency of violence in these different settings; violence as it directly impacts school administrators; strategies for preventing and addressing violence at both the school and individual levels; and ways to work with the community both in and out of schools. Part I focuses on issues. In Part II, solutions that have been used to deal with youth violence are offered for readers to consider, including chapters on effective conflict management practices, behavioral support plans, school-community relations, the development of a caring school community as a way to decrease tendencies toward violence, and a model which demonstrates an in-practice, state-wide program designed to assist in the development of a community-focused school. Each chapter concludes with discussion questions and a case study to enhance understanding of and reflection on the issues surrounding school violence. The text is intended as supplementary material for any course preparing school administrators. Presenting both research and practice, the text can be a guide for practicing school administrators in their search for ways to insure the safety and well being of the students whom they serve, as well as a resource for individuals in other community-based human service agencies who deal with school violence.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to generate in-depth understanding and descriptions of secondary students' experiences of safety in the public schools. Quantitative research has demonstrated that students self-report feeling unsafe in school (Utah State University: Center for the School of the Future, 2006). School violence is decreasing, yet many school districts have sponsored and implemented heightened security measures. It seems a contradiction, but amidst heightened security secondary public school students self-report feeling unsafe in school. This study investigated this phenomenon to provide rich and detailed data, utilizing a grounded theory approach to qualitative research and design. The perceptions and experiences of secondary students in public school were described in focus groups comprised of eighth grade students. Five central and unifying themes emerged from the data informing how and why secondary students feel safe and unsafe in school. Results indicated that students feel most safe in schools when students have trusting relationships with school personnel and peers and when school adults adhere to procedures and policies and respond in meaningful ways to student concerns.
