Book Synopsis God on the Grounds by : Harry Y. Gamble
Download or read book God on the Grounds written by Harry Y. Gamble and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-thinking Thomas Jefferson established the University of Virginia as a secular institution and stipulated that the University should not provide any instruction in religion. Yet over the course of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth, religion came to have a prominent place in the University, which today maintains the largest department of religious studies of any public university in America. Given his intentions, how did Jefferson's university undergo such remarkable transformations? In God on the Grounds, esteemed religious studies scholar Harry Gamble offers the first history of religion’s remarkably large role—both in practice and in study—at UVA. Jefferson’s own reputation as a religious skeptic and infidel was a heavy liability to the University, which was widely regarded as injurious to the faith and morals of its students. Consequently, the faculty and Board of Visitors were eager throughout the nineteenth century to make the University more religious. Gamble narrates the early, rapid, and ongoing introduction of religion into the University’s life through the piety of professors, the creation of the chaplaincy, the growth of the YMCA, the multiplication of religious services and meetings, the building of a chapel, and the establishment of a Bible lectureship and a School of Biblical History and Literature. He then looks at how—only in the mid-twentieth century—the University began to retreat from its religious entanglements and reclaim its secular character as a public institution. A vital contribution to the institutional history of UVA, God on the Grounds sheds light on the history of higher education in the United States, American religious history, and the development of religious studies as an academic discipline.
Book Synopsis Teaching About Diversity by : Melissa J. Marks
Download or read book Teaching About Diversity written by Melissa J. Marks and published by IAP. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers easily implemented strategies for use with secondary and undergraduate students to promote greater engagement with the realities of diversity and commitment to social justice within their classrooms. Defining diversity broadly, the book provides effective pedagogical techniques to help students question their own assumptions, think critically, and discuss issues within race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and ability. The K-12 student population is increasingly diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, language, religion, socio-economic status, and family structure. However, the overwhelming majority of teachers continues to come from White, non-urban, middle class backgrounds (Fletcher, 2014; Hughes et al., 2011) These differences can have serious repercussions for student learning. Non-majority students who feel that their culture or background is not acknowledged or accepted at school are likely to disengage from expected academic and social activities (Hughes et al., 2011). Concurrently, the majority students remain unaware of privilege and ignorant of societal systemic discrimination. In order to teach for social justice, ideas regarding power structure, privilege, and oppression need to be discussed openly. Fear of upsetting students or not knowing how to handle the issue of social justice are commonly heard reasons for not discussing “difficult” subjects (Marks, Binkley, & Daly, 2014). However, when teachers choose not to discuss topics within diversity, students assume that the topics are taboo, dangerous, or unimportant. These assumptions impede students’ abilities to ask important questions, learn how to speak about issues effectively and comprehend the complex challenges woven into current national conversations.
Book Synopsis Overcoming Religious Illiteracy by : D. Moore
Download or read book Overcoming Religious Illiteracy written by D. Moore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-10-02 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Overcoming Religious Illiteracy, Harvard professor and Phillips Academy teacher Diane L. Moore argues that though the United States is one of the most religiously diverse nations in the world, the vast majority of citizens are woefully ignorant about religion itself and the basic tenets of the world's major religious traditions. The consequences of this religious illiteracy are profound and include fueling the culture wars, curtailing historical understanding and promoting religious and racial bigotry. In this volume, Moore combines theory with practice to articulate how to incorporate the study of religion into the schools in ways that will invigorate classrooms and enhance democratic discourse in the public sphere.

Book Synopsis Understanding the Whole Student by : Clifford Mayes
Download or read book Understanding the Whole Student written by Clifford Mayes and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the Whole Student presents a holistic approach to multicultural educational issues by viewing them in terms of the student as a physical, psychosocial, cognitive, ethical, and spiritual being. Conversely, these levels of a student's being cannot be seen apart from the student's cultural identities. This unique book demonstrates that, in a pluralistic democracy, good teaching and deep learning must be multicultural and must look at the student as a whole being, not just as a future worker in a transnational corporate economy as is currently the case with both neo-liberal and neo-conservative programs for 'reform.' The authors contend that good education is, and must be, multicultural in order to gain a deeper perspective on issues under analysis in the classroom through the sharing and negotiating of many different cultural perspectives.

Book Synopsis Religious Tolerance, Education and the Curriculum by : Elizabeth Burns Coleman
Download or read book Religious Tolerance, Education and the Curriculum written by Elizabeth Burns Coleman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of a secular education system was one of the great social experiments designed to break down religious intolerance within society. One element of this design was administrative, involving the creation of non-denominational schools, and another element involved a centralised curriculum. In this collection of essays, political philosophers, lawyers, sociologists, theologians and educators explore the role of state schools in promoting tolerance within 21st century multicultural, religiously pluralistic societies. How may different models of liberalism in the secular state have different outcomes in relation to religious tolerance in the education system? Does a state education system have a role in teaching values such as tolerance, and if so, how is this best achieved? How are epistemology and truth connected with tolerance? How does the ideal of a ‘value free’ secular education mask the values that the secular state teaches? The essays are written from both theoretical and practical perspectives and engage with each other directly to address one of the significant issues of our day. This is the fourth volume arising from a series of conferences on the theme of ‘Negotiating the Sacred’. Previous volumes have included /Blasphemy and Sacrilege in a Multicultural Society; Blasphemy and Sacrilege in the Arts; and Medicine, Religion and the Body.

Book Synopsis It's Time to Call a Spade a Spade by : David Walker
Download or read book It's Time to Call a Spade a Spade written by David Walker and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major culture war is raging in America. The battleground includes issues such as abortion, homosexuality, and evolution. The debate continues over whether America was established as a Christian nation and what this thing called "separation of church and state" really means. Some even debate the truth and trustworthiness of the greatest book ever written, the Bible. Most Christians instinctively know what is right but are ill equipped to stand for it, because they do not have the facts. This book will give you the facts that support the truth and thus equip you with the tools you need to stand for what's right. It is time to cut through the prevailing barrage of misinformation and stand for truth based upon the facts. It is time to look clearly at the issues that threaten the fabric of American society and to rise up and call a spade a spade. David Walker is a teacher who became a pastor. He pastored the same church for twenty-eight years, during which time the church grew from 55 to over 500 members. He also started a Christian school that grew to over 500 students. He has a bachelor's degree and a master's degree and has completed all the work for his doctorate except for the dissertation. For twelve years, David taught American history, world history, government, and economics in high schools in Indiana, Ohio, and Florida. His doctoral work consisted of a major in American history with cognates in political science and educational psychology. David has traveled extensively preaching crusades and training pastors on four continents. He has conducted crusades and pastor-training seminars in a number of places in India and Nigeria. He has ministered in crusades and churches in Brazil and Benin and written training materials for house church leaders in China.
