Different from O2 oxidation, which results in a ( 5x5 )R270 structure and an O coverage that saturates at 0.8 ML, temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed bulk PdO formation by plasma exposure at 550 K. TPD result of propene reaction on such surfaces showed only a single peak at 490 K for all carbon oxides and water, suggesting a direct oxidation pathway for the adsorbed intact propene molecules. The initial sticking coefficient of propene on the PdO clusters was close to unity indicating a high reaction rate on the oxide surface.

Book excerpt: Since the first edition of "Scanning 'funneling Microscopy I" has been pub lished, considerable progress has been made in the application of STM to the various classes of materials treated in this volume, most notably in the field of adsorbates and molecular systems. An update of the most recent develop ments will be given in an additional Chapter 9. The editors would like to thank all the contributors who have supplied up dating material, and those who have provided us with suggestions for further improvements. We also thank Springer-Verlag for the decision to publish this second edition in paperback, thereby making this book affordable for an even wider circle of readers. Hamburg, July 1994 R. Wiesendanger Preface to the First Edition Since its invention in 1981 by G. Binnig, H. Rohrer and coworkers at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has devel oped into an invaluable surface analytical technique allowing the investigation of real-space surface structures at the atomic level. The conceptual simplicity of the STM technique is startling: bringing a sharp needle to within a few Angstroms of the surface of a conducting sample and using the tunneling cur rent, which flows on application of a bias voltage, to sense the atomic and elec tronic surface structure with atomic resolution! Prior to 1981 considerable scepticism existed as to the practicability of this approach.

Book excerpt: Scanning Tunneling Microscopy I provides a unique introduction to a novel and fascinating technique that produces beautiful images of nature on an atomic scale. It is the first of three volumes that together offer a comprehensive treatment of scanning tunneling microscopy, its diverse applications, and its theoretical treatment. In this volume the reader will find a detailed description of the technique itself and of its applications to metals, semiconductors, layered materials, adsorbed molecules and superconductors. In addition to the many representative results reviewed, extensive references to original work will help to make accessible the vast body of knowledge already accumulated in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there has been steady progress in understanding aspects of epitaxial growth throughout the last 30 years of modern surface science, work in this area has intensified greatly in the last 5 years. A number of factors have contributed to this expansion. One has been the general trend in surface science to tackle problems of increasing complexity as confidence is gained in the methodology, so for example, the role of oxide/metal interfaces in determining the properties of many practical supported catalysts is now being explored in greater detail. A second factor is the recognition of the potential importance of artificial multilayer materials not only in semiconductor devices but also in metal/metal systems because of their novel magnetic properties. Perhaps even more important than either of these application areas, however, is the newly-discovered power of scanning probe microscopies, and most notably scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), to provide the means to study epitaxial growth phenomena on an atomic scale under a wide range of conditions. These techniques have also contributed to revitalised interest in methods of fabricating and exploiting artificial structures (lateral as well as in layers) on a nanometre scale. This volume, on Growth and Properties of Ultrathin Epitaxial Layers, includes a collection of articles which reflects the present state of activity in this field. The emphasis is on metals and oxides rather than semiconductors.

Book excerpt: Scanning Tunneling Microscopy II, like its predecessor, presents detailed and comprehensive accounts of the basic principles and the broad range of applications of STM and related scanning probe techniques. The applications discussed in this volume come predominantly from the fields of electrochemistry and biology. In contrast to those in STM I, these studies may be performed in air and in liquids. The extensions of the basic technique to map other interactions are described in chapters on scanning force microscopy, magnetic force microscopy, and scanning near-field optical microscopy, together with a survey of other related techniques. Also discussed here is the use of a scanning proximal probe for surface modification. Together, the two volumes give a comprehensive account of experimental aspects of STM and provide essential reading and reference material. In this second edition the text has been updated and new methods are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a summary of results from a program aimed at studying the atomic structure of semiconductor surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The bulk of the research concerned the epitaxial growth of metals on the (111) and the (100) surfaces of silicon, with particular emphasis on the metals indium and gallium. The STM images provided structural information on all of the metal-induced surface reconstructions in these systems as well as information on the general behavior of the metals on the Si surface, yielding insight into metal mobility, the effect of stepped substrates, and the nucleation of metal growth on the surface. In addition to the semiconductor surface work, there has been some studies of the epitaxial growth of metals on Au(111), and the surface structure of the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+8. Keywords: Semiconductor surfaces, Scanning tunneling microscopy, Silicon, Metal surfaces, Epitaxial growth, Superconductors. (JES).

Book excerpt: This book presents the physical and technical foundation of the state of the art in applied scanning probe techniques. It constitutes a timely and comprehensive overview of SPM applications. The chapters in this volume relate to scanning probe microscopy techniques, characterization of various materials and structures and typical industrial applications, including topographic and dynamical surface studies of thin-film semiconductors, polymers, paper, ceramics, and magnetic and biological materials. The chapters are written by leading researchers and application scientists from all over the world and from various industries to provide a broader perspective.
