Book excerpt: This is book 1 of the Steel Jockeys MC series! Books 2 and 3 are available everywhere now! I won't take no for an answer. I claimed my best friend's little sister. I don't care if she wants this. I don't care if it's wrong. Tonight, she'll learn the truth: she belongs to me now. I swore I'd keep her safe. That's the last thing I said to him – her brother, my best friend – before he died in my arms. Keeping her safe meant keeping her far the hell away from the Steel Jockeys MC. A little girl like Ruby had no business getting mixed up with a clubhouse full of cold-blooded killers, hitmen, outlaws, and bikers. We drank too much. Rode too hard. So, for seven years, I kept her away. And I upheld my oath to my fallen brother-in-arms. But all of a sudden, Ruby isn't a little girl anymore. She's a woman. Not just any woman – she's a beauty. Hair like a sunlit waterfall, skin pure and flawless, curves that test the strength of my zipper. Like it happened overnight, she went from being my best friend's kid sister… To a woman that I'd kill to have. The only problem is, other people feel the same. Especially the men who slaughtered her brother. And they're coming back to finish the job they started seven years ago. But there's a difference. This time around, I'm ready for war. Because if they think they can take Ruby from me, they've got another thing coming. From the second I saw her, I knew one thing: this girl was mine now. And there's not a single man, dead or alive, who gets to lay a damn finger on what's mine. I'm a savage rebel. And I'll kill to protect my woman.

Johnstone have created a brilliant new series: a saga of two men, one a gunfighter, the other a Yankee lawman, building a future in the West's' most dangerous territory. . . Welcome To Hangtree, Texas--The Most Dangerous Town In The World In 1866, the border between the U.S. and Mexico is a hotbed of gunrunners, mercenaries, and the Emperor of Mexico's spies, saboteurs and double agents. On top of which, West Texas is plagued by Comanche warriors. Into this mix ride two massive gangs of the meanest, most kill-happy bunch of bloodthirsty ravagers to ever draw a breath. Sam Heller and Johnny Cross have got the marauders in their sights, but they aren't ready for the slaughter and destruction the raiders unleash on Hangtree County. Suddenly, the good guys in Hangtree are dangerously outnumbered. Sam and Johnny turn to cunning--pitting one gang against the other. And what that won't do, a liberated army howitzer just might--as the border explodes into an all-out white-hot civil war. . .

Book excerpt: Many of the world's states—from Algeria to Ireland to the United States—are the result of robust national movements that achieved independence. Many other national movements have failed in their attempts to achieve statehood, including the Basques, the Kurds, and the Palestinians. In Rebel Power, Peter Krause offers a powerful new theory to explain this variation focusing on the internal balance of power among nationalist groups, who cooperate with each other to establish a new state while simultaneously competing to lead it. The most powerful groups push to achieve states while they are in position to rule them, whereas weaker groups unlikely to gain the spoils of office are likely to become spoilers, employing risky, escalatory violence to forestall victory while they improve their position in the movement hierarchy. Hegemonic movements with one dominant group are therefore more likely to achieve statehood than internally competitive, fragmented movements due to their greater pursuit of victory and lesser use of counterproductive violence. Krause conducted years of fieldwork in government and nationalist group archives in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, as well as more than 150 interviews with participants in the Palestinian, Zionist, Algerian, and Irish national movements. This research generated comparative longitudinal analyses of these four national movements involving 40 groups in 44 campaigns over a combined 140 years of struggle. Krause identifies new turning points in the history of these movements and provides fresh explanations for their use of violent and nonviolent strategies, as well as their numerous successes and failures. Rebel Power is essential reading for understanding not only the history of national movements but also the causes and consequences of contentious collective action today, from the Arab Spring to the civil wars and insurgencies in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: January 1889. German and American naval forces are engaged in an escalating confrontation in Samoa in the South Pacific. Warships are at battle stations. Naval reinforcements from both nations are on the way. The press in Berlin, Hamburg, Washington, and San Francisco is calling for national honor to be defended. At any minute, open warfare may erupt. All it will take is one spark. President Grover Cleveland orders Commander Peter Wake, Office of Naval Intelligence, to clandestinely accomplish one of two things: either somehow prevent all-out war between Germany and America, or win it decisively at the outset to prevent combat from spreading worldwide. Coming up with an admittedly makeshift plan along the way, Wake enlists the help of an unlikely trio he encounters in the Pacific: a Hawaiian artillery officer, a renegade Methodist minister, and a beautiful widow. Unfortunately for Wake—and unbeknownst to him—each of them has his or her own motives for heading to Samoa. If he fails, thousands across the world will die. It is a dilemma right out of today's headlines: When do you cross the line of civilized behavior to potentially save lives? How do you live with the consequences? Amidst this dilemma, Wake decides to employ a repulsive tactic that results in horror for a member of his team, something he will regret for the rest of his life. The intrigue is as deadly as the action in this novel, which culminates in one of the most significant events in Pacific—and American—naval history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fake history is not a harmless mistake of fact or interpretation. It is a mistake that conceals prejudice; a mistake that discriminates against certain kinds of people; a mistake held despite a preponderance of evidence; a mistake that harms us. Fake history is like the Zombies we see in mass media, for the fake fact, like the fictional Zombie, lives by turning real events and people into monstrous perversions of fact and interpretation. Its pervasiveness reveals that prejudice remains its chief appeal to those who believe it. Its effect is insidious, because we cannot or will not destroy those mischievous lies. Zombie history is almost impossible to kill. Some Zombie history was and is political, a genre of what Hannah Arendt called “organizational lying” about the past. Its makers designed the Zombie to create a basis in the false past for particular discriminatory policies. Other history Zombies are cultural. They encapsulate and empower prejudice and stereotyping. Still other popular history Zombies do not look disfigured, but like Zombies walk among us without our realizing how devastating their impact can be. Zombie History argues that, whatever their purpose, whatever the venue in which they appear, history Zombies undermine the very foundations of disinterested study of the past.
