Book excerpt: I've been around considerable in the Western Country-mostly some years back-and I've seen quite a little, one way and another, of the folks living there: but I can't really and truly say I've often come up with them nature's noblemen-all the time at it doing stunts in natural nobility-the story-books make out is the chief population of them parts. Like enough the young fellers from the East who write such sorts of books-having plenty of spare time for writing, while they're giving their feet a rest to get the ache out-do come across 'em, same as they say they do; but I reckon the herd's a small one-and, for a fact, if you could cross the book brand with the kind you mostly meet on the ranges the breed would be improved.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to DOT administrators, supervisors, and staff, as well as to the consultants that work with them. Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) regional and local agency staffs might also find it informative. The synthesis was initiated in response to a recommendation made during the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) Reassessment, which was undertaken by the FHWA in 1997/1998 to expand data sharing and partnering more widely among states, MPOs, and local governments. It documents current arrangements among state DOTs, MPOs, and other local and regional agencies to partner in the collection and share in the use of HPMS data. Key elements examined include institutional arrangements, the use of data and data sharing, cost and resource requirements, technical capabilities/barriers, implementation processes, and data quality and capability, as well as successes, failures, and difficulties. Case studies of successful state and MPO partnerships are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times has called the work of the Polshek Partnership a "triumph of substance over flash," and New Yorker Paul Goldberger has lauded the firm's ability to create meaningful works that demonstrate that "architecture can be an enriching force in life." This long-awaited monograph is published as the firm celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Guided by a respect for the environment, the innovative use of materials and technology, a progressive aesthetic vision, and its collaborative structure, the Polshek Partnership has produced a catalog of public worksnbsp;-- from theaters sand museums to libraries, hospitals, and schoolsnbsp;-- that collectively ennoble our civic life on a daily basis. In this handsomely produced volume, sixteen, of the partnership's most important works are examined in depth from initial conception through design, construction, and completion. These works include the celebrated Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Times Printing Plant, and the Ed Sullivan Theater adaptation for David Letterman's Late Show. The book also documents seven of the firm's most recent projects, including the Clinton Presidential Library, Scandinavia House, and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Book Synopsis Public Private Partnerships for Urban Water Utilities by : Philippe Marin
Download or read book Public Private Partnerships for Urban Water Utilities written by Philippe Marin and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-09-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Public-Private Partnerships for Urban Water Utilities: A Review of Experiences in Developing Countries' analyzes the market growth of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the developing world since 1990, and the performance of more than 65 large water PPP projects representing more than 100 million people for access, service quality, operational efficiency, and tariff levels. Although a relatively small portion of the water utilities in the developing world are operated under PPPs (about 7 percent in 2007), the urban population served by private water operators has grown every year since 1990. Despite many difficulties encountered by PPP projects and a few contract terminations, a large majority of contracts awarded since 1990 are still in place. The track record for improving service and efficiency reaffirms the value of PPPs to help turn around poorly performing water utilities, even though the level of private financing did not match initial expectations. Over time, a more realistic market has developed, the number of private investors from developing countries has grown, and contract designs have become more pragmatic concerning risk allocations between partners. The water sector has many features that set it apart from other infrastructure sectors. This book suggests the need for careful consideration of those specificities to successfully involve private operators. Although concessions with private financing have worked in a few places, contractual arrangements that combine private operation with public financing appear to be the most sustainable option in many countries. Policy makers, stakeholders, and donors need to remain heavily engaged in the water sector, especially in the poorest countries and during a global financial crisis. This book contributes to a better understanding of the various options to tackle the many challenges of providing water and sanitation services to urban populations in the developing world.
