Book Synopsis The Idea of Galicia by : Larry Wolff
Download or read book The Idea of Galicia written by Larry Wolff and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galicia was created at the first partition of Poland in 1772 and disappeared in 1918. Yet, in slightly over a century, the idea of Galicia came to have meaning for both the peoples who lived there and the Habsburg government that ruled it. Indeed, its memory continues to exercise a powerful fascination for those who live in its former territories and for the descendants of those who emigrated out of Galicia. The idea of Galicia was largely produced by the cultures of two cities, Lviv and Cracow. Making use of travelers' accounts, newspaper reports, and literary works, Wolff engages such figures as Emperor Joseph II, Metternich, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Ivan Franko, Stanisław Wyspiański, Tadeusz "Boy" Żeleński, Isaac Babel, Martin Buber, and Bruno Schulz. He shows the exceptional importance of provincial space as a site for the evolution of cultural meanings and identities, and analyzes the province as the framework for non-national and multi-national understandings of empire in European history.
Download or read book Corpus written by Jean-Luc Nancy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have we thought “the body”? How can we think it anew? The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”

Book Synopsis Dada and Beyond, Volume 1 by : Elza Adamowicz
Download or read book Dada and Beyond, Volume 1 written by Elza Adamowicz and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of critical essays celebrates the subversive and challenging creativity of the Dada movement, born in pacifist Zurich in 1916 in violent reaction to the First World War. It examines the collective and individual activities that took place under the name of Dada in Zurich, Cologne, Berlin, Paris, New York and Barcelona, and explores the various creative forms employed, including text, collage, photomontage, objects, dance, performance and film. The authors suggest new ways of understanding the work of the most famous Dadaists, while also casting light on the contribution of hitherto neglected figures. Far from attempting to reduce Dada to a homogeneous movement, or to define a unifying principle beneath and beyond the multiple directions taken by Dadaists, this collection aims to respect the diversity and heterogeneity of the movement's collective activities as well as the specificity of its individual actors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Silence of Colonel Bramble" by André Maurois is a very funny novella. The story is set in the trenches and reveals the author's memories of the First World War. Maurois plays the role of Aurelle, who is the French interpreter. Aurelle uses his poems to intersperse his reminiscences. He finds the British very hard to make out! The book is not a war memoir but about British people, their way of thinking, and their culture in a fun manner.
Book Synopsis At the Limits of Presentation by : Martta Heikkilä
Download or read book At the Limits of Presentation written by Martta Heikkilä and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the significance of art in Jean-Luc Nancy's philosophy. The main object of the work is to discuss the notion of art and its contribution to some of Nancy's central ontological ideas. Art's importance is considered in its own right - the main questions being whether art does have ontological significance, and if so, how one should describe this with respect to the theme of presentation. According to the work's central argument, with his thinking on art Nancy attempts to give one viewpoint to what is called the metaphysics of presence and to its deconstruction. On which grounds may one say that art is not reducible to philosophy? These topics are examined by highlighting the differentiation between the notions of «presentation» and «representation» with regard to the influence of Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida on Nancy's thought.

Book Synopsis Isabelle Huppert by : Darren Waldron
Download or read book Isabelle Huppert written by Darren Waldron and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a lineup of distinguished academics, this collection remedies the absence of scholarly attention to French cinematic legend Isabelle Huppert. This volume deconstructs Huppert's star persona and public profile through critical and theoretical analysis of her various screen roles-from her very early appearances alongside Romy Schneider in César et Rosalie (Sautet, 1972) and Gérard Depardieu in Les Valseuses (1974) to a number of celebrated collaborations with high-profile European auteurs such as Catherine Breillat, Claire Denis, Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Haneke and Joseph Losey, and with more popular auteurs such as Claude Chabrol and François Ozon. Known for a cerebral internalization of characterization, a technical mastery of extreme emotions, and a singular brand of icy intellectualism, Huppert's performances continue to impress, stun and surprise audiences. By focusing on several theoretical questions that relate to image, identity, sexuality and place, this volume situates Huppert's star persona in the more practical creative contexts of performance, authorship, genre and collaboration. This volume contrasts complementary critical accounts of her stardom by working across the different periods and territories of her career.

Download or read book Queer Nations written by Jarrod Hayes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) has been inhabited for millennia by a heterogeneous populace. However, in the wake of World War II, when independence movements began to gain momentum in these French colonies, the dominant national discourses attempted to define national identities by exclusion. One rallying cry from the 1930s was "Islam is my religion, Arabic is my language, Algeria is my fatherland." In this incisive postcolonial study, Jarrod Hayes uses literary analysis to examine how Francophone novelists from the Maghreb engaged in a diametric nation-building project. Their works imagined a diverse nation peopled by those who were excluded by the dominant political discourses, especially those who did not conform to traditional sexual norms. By incorporating representations of marginal sexualities, sexual dissidence, and gender insubordination, Maghrebian novelists imagined an anticolonial struggle that would result in sexual liberation and envisioned nations that could be defined and developed inclusively.

Book Synopsis Ancient Histories of Medicine by : P.J. van der Eijk
Download or read book Ancient Histories of Medicine written by P.J. van der Eijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on the ways in which Greek and Latin authors viewed and wrote about the history of medicine in the ancient world. Special attention is given to medical doxography, i.e. the description of the characteristic doctrines of the great medical authorities of the past. The volume examines the various attitudes to the history of medicine adopted by a wide range of ancient writers (e.g. Aristotle, Galen, Celsus, Herophilus, Soranus, Oribasius, Caelius Aurelianus). It discusses the historical sense of ancient medicine, the variety of versions of the medical past that were created and the wide range of purposes and strategies which medico-historical writing served. It also deals with the question of the sources, the role of historiographical traditions and the variety of literary genres of ancient medico-historical writing.
