Book excerpt: The Concilium Sanguinarius, the Council of Blood who rule the vampires with an iron fist and manipulate the mortal world from the shadows, with a deftness born of the countless centuries. In New York, as the millennium moves and the twenty first Century dawns, a female vampire, Danaan, feels pangs of loneliness and begins to search the night for a companion. Also in the city is Ymochel, outcast and distrusted, and eager for revenge on the Concilium and, more specifically, Danaan. Theirs is a history that crosses boundless centuries and a myriad taboos, but now their histories converge in the most violent of ways. But do they act alone, or is a more sinister power at work? What occurs between them threatens the entire stability of vampire society.

Book excerpt: An indispensable guide containing all the common jargon, slang, doublespeak, plays on words, etc., used by real vampires to converse with one another, either privately or in public. With so many real vampires "coming out," or at least reaching out to others, there are many who just discovering there's a wide community out there, both on and offline. Many new vampires are unfamiliar with "vampspeak," and as such, use inaccurate or inappropriate terms they have been exposed to in popular fiction, movie, or role-playing games; or they use specialized terms only they, and possibly a small group of fellow vampires, have come up with. Unfortunately, though they may be quite real, this often makes them seem like posers, or ignorant. This lexicon should be an excellent guide and introduction to much of the terminology used; it is not intended to cover the highly specialized terminology and jargon used by specific groups and houses. This edition includes over 60 new terms not contained in the previous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who recognize that the original Tarzan is a literary creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs understand that the exploits of Tarzan are best explored through the magical medium of the printed word. Readers can experience a journey that lasts through 24 books and wanders not only into the jungle depths but farther down through the Earth's crust into the savage prehistoric land of Pellucidar. Also covered is the long out of print The Tarzan Twins as well as the recent Tarzan, the Lost Adventure and The Eternal Savage. This book serves as a literary guide to all the Tarzan novels. Section One provides an overview of Tarzan the character, including a list of the many names and titles used by and given to Tarzan; Section Two covers the mythical language used in the novels, including a dictionary of the ape language; Section Three enumerates the lost cities, civilizations, tribes, peoples and religions discovered by Tarzan, detailing their religious rites and locations; Section Four describes the characters (human and otherwise) found in the novels; and Section Five gives summaries of all 24 books that comprise the Burroughs canon. The book also includes over thirty illustrations from the series' various printings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fourth in a series of 4 volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series about morphology, anatomy, reproduction, development, ecology, phylogeny and systematics of Annelida. It covers the most typical polychaetes, Phyllodocida, together with certain smaller taxa placed incertae sedis. This volume completes the polychaetous Annelida. Phyllodocida are often vagile, possess well-developed parapodia. Due to their broad and flat cirri these parapodia look like leaves in some taxa and leading to the name of the entire group. Many of its members are macrophagous and often predators. Accordingly most species possess elaborate sense structures such as sensory palps, antennae, eyes and nuchal organs. In certain species the eyes comprise thousands of photoreceptor cells and lenses most likely allowing forming true images. Phyllodocida typically possess an axial muscular pharynx called proboscis functioning as a kind of suction pipe allowing them to swallow and ingest their prey or other food. This pharynx may be armed with cuticular jaws and some species even possess venom glands. The probably most popular and important polychaete model organism, Platynereis dumerilii, belongs to this interesting group. Phyllodocida fall into two to three higher clades comprising about 25 families which represent more than one fourth of the polychaete diversity. One of these families, Syllidae, comprises about 700 valid species of mainly small size and may, therefore, represent one of the most complex and somehow difficult polychaete families on Earth.

Book excerpt: As our 88th issue was coming together, I noticed that we have a pair of jungle adventure novels—the first Bomba the Jungle Boy story, as well as Tarzan and the Lost Empire. So I’m going to bill it as a “Special Jungle Warrior Issue” and just add that it’s a fun one. #88 also includes two original mysteries (Mark Thielman, N.M. Cedeño) plus a bunch of other great modern and classic stories (Fritz Leiber! Day Keene! George O. Smith!). I would have gladly bought Anna Tambour’s story for Weird Tales when I was editing WT—don’t forget to check it out. (It falls somewhere between fantasy, crime, and Rod Serling’s the Twilight Zone. And we are super happy to welcome back Acquiring Editor Cynthia Ward, who brings us the Walter Jon Williams tale this time. We look forward to many more selections from her. Here’s the complete lineup: Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure: “License to Kill,” by Mark Thielman [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “The Case of the Burgled Bushels,” by Hal Charles. [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery] “Short-Term Murder,” by N.M. Cedeño [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “Dead Men Do Tell Tales,” by Day Keene [short story] Bomba the Jungle Boy, by Roy Rockwood [novel] Science Fiction & Fantasy: “Lethe,” by Walter Jon Williams [Cynthia Ward Presents short story] “I Killed for a Lucky Strike,” by Anna Tambour [short story] “Atomic Bonanza,” by George O. Smith “Martians Keep Out!” by Fritz Leiber [short novel] Tarzan and the Lost Empire, by Edgar Rice Burroughs [novel]

The book intervenes in narratives of virtual reality to propose that the Internet can be re-read as a space of fantasy.

Book excerpt: "There's no book available on the vampire culture today with the range, depth, and diversity of Belanger's Vampires in Their Own Words."—Katherine Ramsland, author of Piercing the Darkness and The Science of Vampires "Belanger gives empathetic access to an emergent new magical-religious community...An important sourcebook for both the scholar and inquiring public."—J. Gordon Melton, Director, Institute for the Study of American Religion, and author of The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead The Code of Silence Has Been Broken For this anthology, vampire Michelle Belanger convinced nearly two dozen real-life vampires to break the code of silence that has kept their fascinating subculture shrouded in secrecy. Sometimes provocative, sometimes surprisingly down-to-earth, these candid firsthand accounts come from both psi vampires who feed on energy and sanguine vampires who drink actual blood. Their true stories shed light on a variety of topics, including awakening to vampirism, the compulsion to feed and feeding practices, donor ethics and etiquette, and vampire traditions and codes of behavior.
