Book Synopsis More Important Than the Music by : Bruce D. Epperson
Download or read book More Important Than the Music written by Bruce D. Epperson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, jazz is considered high art, America’s national music, and the catalog of its recordings—its discography—is often taken for granted. But behind jazz discography is a fraught and highly colorful history of research, fanaticism, and the intense desire to know who played what, where, and when. This history gets its first full-length treatment in Bruce D. Epperson’s More Important Than the Music. Following the dedicated few who sought to keep jazz’s legacy organized, Epperson tells a fascinating story of archival pursuit in the face of negligence and deception, a tale that saw curses and threats regularly employed, with fisticuffs and lawsuits only slightly rarer. Epperson examines the documentation of recorded jazz from its casual origins as a novelty in the 1920s and ’30s, through the overwhelming deluge of 12-inch vinyl records in the middle of the twentieth century, to the use of computers by today’s discographers. Though he focuses much of his attention on comprehensive discographies, he also examines the development of a variety of related listings, such as buyer’s guides and library catalogs, and he closes with a look toward discography’s future. From the little black book to the full-featured online database, More Important Than the Music offers a history not just of jazz discography but of the profoundly human desire to preserve history itself.
Book Synopsis Easy Listening and Film Scoring 1948-78 by : Jack Curtis Dubowsky
Download or read book Easy Listening and Film Scoring 1948-78 written by Jack Curtis Dubowsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composers, arrangers, conductors, session musicians, and executives worked in easy listening and scoring, complicating an academic focus that lionizes film music while ignoring or deriding easy listening. This book documents easy listening’s connections with film music, an aspect overlooked in academic and popular literature. Fueled by the rise of the LP and home entertainment, easy listening became the largest midcentury commercial music market, generating more actual income for the record business than 7- inch singles. Easy listening roped in subgenres including classical, baroque, jazz, Latin, Polynesian, "exotica," rock, Broadway, and R&B, appropriated and reinterpreted just as they were for cinema. Easy listening provided opportunities in orchestral music for conservatory- trained composers. Major film composers such as Henry Mancini and Michel Legrand had a prodigious output of easy listening albums. Critics fault easy listening for structural racisms, overlooking its evolution and practitioners. Easy listening helped destabilize a tripartite record business that categorized product as race records, old time records, or general popular music. Charlie Parker’s with Strings records altered the direction of jazz, profoundly influencing other performers, encouraging bold crosspollinations, and making money. The influence of technology and historical contexts of music for work and leisure are explored. Original interviews and primary sources will fascinate scholars, historians, and students of cinema, television, film scoring, and midcentury popular music.
Book Synopsis Blowing the Blues by : Dick Heckstall-Smith
Download or read book Blowing the Blues written by Dick Heckstall-Smith and published by Clear Press Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the autobiography of a master musician, the King of British blues saxophone. In the 60s and 70s Dick was the cornerstone of such seminal R&B bands as Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, the Graham Bond Organisation, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Colosseum, paving the way for R&B-influenced rock groups like Fleetwood Mac, the Yardbirds, the Animals and the Rolling Stones. With his pithy humour, Dick describes the revolutionary founding years of British R&B - his anecdotes about Ginger Baker, Alexis Korner, Charlie Watts and the unforgettable Graham Bond alone are worth the price. An extraordinarily entertaining book, Dick’s unrelentingly honest account of his musical career also reflects on what it takes to be a full time musician, and grapples with the racism and drug abuse endemic in the music industry. In the back of the book is a CD featuring 25 minutes of previously unreleased tracks by Dick Heckstall-Smith, illustrating the sheer musical diversity of his work.

Book Synopsis The McJazz Manuscripts by : Sandy Brown
Download or read book The McJazz Manuscripts written by Sandy Brown and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he died in 1975, Sandy Brown was working on an autobiography in which he had set out to describe, with the incisiveness and idiosyncratic wit which was already familiar to Listener readers of his columns on jazz and pop, the evolution of his talents against a background of Indian childhood, Edinburgh schooldays, and the rewards and frustrations of his twin careers of jazz musician and acoustic architect. Incomplete as it is, the section here provides from the inside a remarkable account of the unique combination of temperament and ability, at once composer and executant, which makes a jazz musician. It is also often extremely funny. The portrait of an outstanding artist and extraordinary man is completed here by a selection from Sandy Brown's Listener articles and the correspondence with which he enlivened the in-trays of public figures, colleagues and friends. 2009 will see the eightieth anniversary of Sandy Brown's birth, the Faber Finds reissue of this title is timed to celebrate that.
