Book excerpt: IN the village of P'pie, at the foot of that gaunt and hungry mountain which men called Limpisi, or Limbi, there lived a young man whose parents had died when he was a child, for in those far-off days the Devil Woman of Limbi demanded double sacrifices, and it was the custom to slay, not the child who was born upon her holy day-which was the ninth of the new moon-but his parents. Therefore he was called by acclamation M'sufu-M'goba-'the-fortunate-boy-who-was-not-his-own-father'. All children who are born of sacrificed parents are notoriously clever, and M'sufu was favoured of ghosts and devils. It is said that when he was walking-young he climbed up to the cave of the Holy Devil Woman herself, passing through the guard of Virgins, who kept the hillside, in a most miraculous way, and that he had tottered into that dreadful cave whence no human had emerged alive, and had found the Old Woman sleeping.

Book Synopsis Philosophy en noir by : Miroslav Petříček

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thought necessarily reflects the times. Following the tragedy of the Holocaust, this fact became ever more clear. And it may be the reason postwar philosophical texts are so difficult to understand, since they confront incomprehensibly traumatic experiences. In this first English-language translation of any of his books, Miroslav Petříček — one of the most influential and erudite Czech philosophers, and a student of Jan Patočka — argues that to exist in the second half of the twentieth century and beyond, Western philosophy has had to rewrite its tradition and its discourse, radically transforming itself. Should philosophy be capable of bearing witness to the time, Petříček contends, this metamorphosis in philosophy is necessary. Offering an original Central European perspective on postwar philosophical discourse that reflects upon the historical underpinnings of pop culture phenomena and complex philosophical schools — including Adorno, Agamben, Benjamin, Derrida, Husserl, Kracauer, and many others — Philosophy en noir is a record of this transformation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "African Novels: Premium Collection of ALL 12 Novels” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was an English writer. During 1907 Edgar travelled to the Congo Free State, to report on atrocities committed against the Congolese under King Leopold II of Belgium and the Belgian rubber companies, in which up to 15 million Congolese were killed. Isabel Thorne of the Weekly Tale-Teller penny magazine, invited Wallace to serialise stories inspired by his experiences. These were published as his first collection Sanders of the River (1911), a best seller, in 1935 adapted into a film with the same name, starring Paul Robeson. Wallace went on to publish 11 more similar collections (102 stories). They were tales of exotic adventure and local tribal rites, set on an African river, mostly without love interest as this held no appeal for Wallace. His first 28 books and their film rights he sold outright, with no royalties, for quick money. Table of Contents: Sanders of the River (1911) The People of the River (1911) The River of Stars (1913) Bosambo of the River (1914) Bones (1915) The Keepers of the King's Peace (1917) Lieutenant Bones (1918) Bones in London (1921) Sandi the Kingmaker (1922) Bones of the River (1923) Sanders (1926) Again Sanders (1928)
