Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title is the first comprehensive book on sampling and modern sample preparation techniques and has several main objectives: to facilitate recognition of sample preparation as both an integral part of the analytical process; to present a fundamental basis and unified theoretical approach for the professional development of sample preparation; to emphasize new developments in sample preparation technology; and to highlight the future impact of sample preparation on new directions in analytical science, particularly automation, miniaturization and field implementation. Until recently, there has been relatively little scientific interest in sampling and sample preparation, however this situation is presently changing as sampling and sample preparation become integral parts of the analytical process with their own unique challenges and research opportunities. Sampling and Sample Preparation for Field and Laboratory is an essential resource for all analytical chemists, and in particular those involved in method development. Not only does it cover the fundamental aspects of extraction, it also covers applications in various matrices and includes sampling strategies and equipment and how these can be integrated into the analytical process for maximum efficiency.

This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to more and more frequent extreme climate events (floods, drought, and frosts) and due to the changes in precipitation (amounts, seasonality, intensity) and warming temperatures that are impacting rainfed agriculture and changing growing seasons, the Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture (MOJA) of the Islamic Republic of Iran asked the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide assistance in setting up an improved agriculture monitoring system, based on integral use of advanced geospatial technologies to support development of the techniques, policy and investment conditions to achieve sustainable agricultural development under the current changing conditions of climate. The project has focused on the identification of state-of-the-art methods and strategy for acreage and yield estimation, based on an assessment of the existing monitoring methodology, optimized through the use of remote sensing. In addition, the project benefitted from the availability of multi-temporal satellite images for testing and monitoring of a range of crops in 3 selected pilot areas: the provinces of Zanjan and Mazandaran and the region of the south of Kerman. The publication reports data collected, processes followed and results obtained at this stage of the still not completely concluded study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of mining is replete with controversy of which much is related to environmental damage and consequent community outrage. Over recent decades, this has led to increased pressure to improve the environmental and social performance of mining operations, particularly in developing countries. The industry has responded by embracing the ideals of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Mining and the Environment identifies and discusses the wide range of social and environmental issues pertaining to mining, with particular reference to mining in developing countries, from where many of the project examples and case studies have been selected. Following an introductory overview of pressing issues, the book illustrates how environmental and social impact assessment, such as defined in "The Equator Principles", integrates with the mining lifecycle and how environmental and social management aims to eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive mining impacts. Practical approaches are provided for managing issues ranging from land acquisition and resettlement of Indigenous peoples, to the technical aspects of acid rock drainage and mine waste management. Moreover, thorough analyses of ways and means of sharing non-transitory mining benefits with host communities are presented to allow mining to provide sustainable benefits for the affected communities. This second edition of Mining and the Environment includes new chapters on Health Impact Assessment, Biodiversity and Gender Issues, all of which have become more important since the first edition appeared a decade ago. The wide coverage of issues and the many real-life case studies make this practice-oriented book a reference and key reading. It is intended for environmental consultants, engineers, regulators and operators in the field and for students to use as a course textbook. As much of the matter applies to the extractive industries as a whole, it will also serve environmental professionals in the oil and gas industries. Karlheinz Spitz and John Trudinger both have multiple years of experience in the assessment of mining projects around the world. The combination of their expertise and knowledge about social, economic, and environmental performance of mining and mine waste management has resulted in this in-depth coverage of the requirements for responsible and sustainable mining.
