Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated white with a Red V jumper that features on the cover of this book and is worn today by St George Illawarra in the NRL is the No. 1 brand across all Australian football codes. The Red V fanbase is the biggest and most passionate in rugby league. 'There is something special at St George, a fellowship, a friendship,' Reg Gasnier once said. Gasnier is a Dragons Immortal, synonymous with class, greatness and the Spirit of the Red V. St George made their premiership debut on St George's Day, 23 April 1921. The club merged with the Illawarra Steelers in 1999 to become the St George Illawarra Dragons. They celebrate their centenary in 2021. During the first 100 years, the Dragons built a reputation for excellence, especially from 1956 to 1966 when teams featuring names such as Gasnier, Provan, Raper and Langlands won 11 straight premierships.Spirit of the Red V (Volume I) is fully endorsed by the St George club, and is the major publishing event of their centenary season. The book explains why the club was not formed in 1908, the game's foundation year. It recalls their early struggles, and how Frank Burge, another League Immortal, arrived in 1927 to build a winning Dragons culture. This revolution brought years of much success and then the 11 premierships, with more glory days to follow. There are countless heroes, a little sadness, and many famous and controversial games, sometimes on fields of mud, always watched by huge crowds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located on a prominent site overlooking Galway Bay in the west of Ireland, Tyrone House was once one of the country’s finest Georgian mansions. Dating from the 1770s, the building was home to generations of the French and St George families, a powerful symbol of their wealth and power. The interior of the house was lavishly decorated and furnished, beginning with the entrance hall, dominated by a life-size marble statue of Lord St George. But despite their advantages, over the course of the nineteenth century, the family went into irreversible decline and eventually forsook their great residence, which was destroyed by fire in 1920. This book tells the story of the rise and fall of the St Georges and their fate, embodied in what became of Tyrone House, which is today a little more than a gaunt ruin.

Book Synopsis Materials and medicine by : Pratik Chakrabarti
Download or read book Materials and medicine written by Pratik Chakrabarti and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine was transformed in the eighteenth century. Aligning the trajectories of intellectual and material wealth, this book uncovers how medicine acquired a new materialism as well as new materials in the context of global commerce and warfare. Bringing together a wide range of sources, this book argues that the intellectual developments in European medicine were inextricably linked to histories of conquest, colonization and the establishment of colonial institutions. This is the first book to trace the links between colonialism and medicine on such a geographical and conceptual scale. Chakrabarti examines the texts, plants, minerals, colonial hospitals, dispensatories and the works of surgeons, missionaries and travellers to demonstrate that these were shaped by the material constitution of eighteenth century European colonialism. This book will appeal to experts and students in histories of medicine, science, and imperialism as well as south Asian and Caribbean history.

Book Synopsis The Cult of Saint George in Medieval England by : Jonathan Good
Download or read book The Cult of Saint George in Medieval England written by Jonathan Good and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2009 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How St. George became the patron saint of England has always been a subject of speculation. He was not English, nor was his principal shrine there - the usual criteria for national patronage ; yet his status and fame came to eclipse that of all other saints. Edward III's use of the saint in his wars against the French established him as a patron and protector of the king ; unlike other saints George was adopted by the English to signify membership of the "community of the realm". This book traces the origins and growth of the cult of St. George, arguing that, especially after Edward's death, George came to represent a "good" politics (deriving from Edward's prosecution of a war with spoils for everyone) and could be used to rebuke subsequent kings for their poor governance. Most medieval kings came to understand this fact, and venerated St. George in order to prove their worthiness to hold their office. The political dimension of the cult never completely displaced the devotional one, but it was so strong that St. George survived the Reformation as a national symbol - one that continues in importance in the recovery of a specifically English identity.
