Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary untold story of Ernest Hemingway's dangerous secret life in espionage A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A finalist for the William E. Colby Military Writers' Award "IMPORTANT" (Wall Street Journal) • "FASCINATING" (New York Review of Books) • "CAPTIVATING" (Missourian) A riveting international cloak-and-dagger epic ranging from the Spanish Civil War to the liberation of Western Europe, wartime China, the Red Scare of Cold War America, and the Cuban Revolution, Writer, Sailor, Soldier, Spy reveals for the first time Ernest Hemingway’s secret adventures in espionage and intelligence during the 1930s and 1940s (including his role as a Soviet agent code-named "Argo"), a hidden chapter that fueled both his art and his undoing. While he was the historian at the esteemed CIA Museum, Nicholas Reynolds, a longtime American intelligence officer, former U.S. Marine colonel, and Oxford-trained historian, began to uncover clues suggesting Nobel Prize-winning novelist Ernest Hemingway was deeply involved in mid-twentieth-century spycraft -- a mysterious and shocking relationship that was far more complex, sustained, and fraught with risks than has ever been previously supposed. Now Reynolds's meticulously researched and captivating narrative "looks among the shadows and finds a Hemingway not seen before" (London Review of Books), revealing for the first time the whole story of this hidden side of Hemingway's life: his troubling recruitment by Soviet spies to work with the NKVD, the forerunner to the KGB, followed in short order by a complex set of secret relationships with American agencies. Starting with Hemingway's sympathy to antifascist forces during the 1930s, Reynolds illuminates Hemingway's immersion in the life-and-death world of the revolutionary left, from his passionate commitment to the Spanish Republic; his successful pursuit by Soviet NKVD agents, who valued Hemingway's influence, access, and mobility; his wartime meeting in East Asia with communist leader Chou En-Lai, the future premier of the People's Republic of China; and finally to his undercover involvement with Cuban rebels in the late 1950s and his sympathy for Fidel Castro. Reynolds equally explores Hemingway's participation in various roles as an agent for the United States government, including hunting Nazi submarines with ONI-supplied munitions in the Caribbean on his boat, Pilar; his command of an informant ring in Cuba called the "Crook Factory" that reported to the American embassy in Havana; and his on-the-ground role in Europe, where he helped OSS gain key tactical intelligence for the liberation of Paris and fought alongside the U.S. infantry in the bloody endgame of World War II. As he examines the links between Hemingway's work as an operative and as an author, Reynolds reveals how Hemingway's secret adventures influenced his literary output and contributed to the writer's block and mental decline (including paranoia) that plagued him during the postwar years -- a period marked by the Red Scare and McCarthy hearings. Reynolds also illuminates how those same experiences played a role in some of Hemingway's greatest works, including For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, while also adding to the burden that he carried at the end of his life and perhaps contributing to his suicide. A literary biography with the soul of an espionage thriller, Writer, Sailor, Soldier, Spy is an essential contribution to our understanding of the life, work, and fate of one of America's most legendary authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 14, 1945, Alfred Eisenstaedt took a picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, minutes after they heard of Japan’s surrender to the United States. Two weeks later LIFE magazine published that image. It became one of the most famous WWII photographs in history (and the most celebrated photograph ever published in the world’s dominant photo-journal), a cherished reminder of what it felt like for the war to finally be over. Everyone who saw the picture wanted to know more about the nurse and sailor, but Eisenstaedt had no information and a search for the mysterious couple’s identity took on a dimension of its own. In 1979 Eisenstaedt thought he had found the long lost nurse. And as far as almost everyone could determine, he had. For the next thirty years Edith Shain was known as the woman in the photo of V-J Day, 1945, Times Square. In 1980 LIFE attempted to determine the sailor’s identity. Many aging warriors stepped forward with claims, and experts weighed in to support one candidate over another. Chaos ensued. For almost two decades Lawrence Verria and George Galdorisi were intrigued by the controversy surrounding the identity of the two principals in Eisenstaedt’s most famous photograph and collected evidence that began to shed light on this mystery. Unraveling years of misinformation and controversy, their findings propelled one claimant’s case far ahead of the others and, at the same time, dethroned the supposed kissed nurse when another candidate’s claim proved more credible. With this book, the authors solve the 67-year-old mystery by providing irrefutable proof to identify the couple in Eisenstaedt’s photo. It is the first time the whole truth behind the celebrated picture has been revealed. The authors also bring to light the couple’s and the photographer’s brushes with death that nearly prevented their famous spontaneous Times Square meeting in the first place. The sailor, part of Bull Halsey’s famous task force, survived the deadly typhoon that took the lives of hundreds of other sailors. The nurse, an Austrian Jew who lost her mother and father in the Holocaust, barely managed to escape to the United States. Eisenstaedt, a World War I German soldier, was nearly killed at Flanders.

Book excerpt: The Brave Pirate Captain and the Sea Monsters Here's a brief summary of the story: The exciting story of Captain Oliver and his loyal crew on the beautiful ship Sapphire Serpent takes us to a world where bravery and adaptability are highly valued. Pirates in the past, Captain Oliver and his gang went through a big change that changed how they felt about the water and how the story of piracy is told. At first, their trip is exciting because they don't know what to expect and they might find buried riches. They are brave pirates who sail the open sea without fear because they want to find treasure and new adventures. But the most important part of their trip is when they find a secret island where dangerous sea animals live. Even though his friends are afraid and warn him not to, Captain Oliver takes his crew with full confidence to the Island of the Sea Monsters. They go into the unknown, where strange noises and a foggy beach make them scared. But they keep going because they believe in his guidance. With swords and guns drawn, they move toward the green but spooky island. The focus of their research is an old, overgrown temple that is guarded by stone statues that look like aquatic life. Because Captain Oliver is determined to figure out the island's secrets, they try to solve more of its puzzles. Inside the temple, they find an amazing treasure room full of gold coins, rare gems, and other beautiful things. Their success is short-lived, though, because giant sea monsters that look like snakes come out of the statues and attack them. Over the course of several hours, the crew's patience is tried, but Captain Oliver's unwavering spirit keeps them going. As the fight goes on, Captain Oliver comes up with a daring plan. He tells his crew to lead the sea monsters back into the water. He jumps onto one of the creatures and puts a huge knife through its shining eye, which makes the other one run away. When the crew finds out that Captain Oliver and the sea monsters have run away to the ocean's depths, it takes away from their moment of victory. When they get back to the Sapphire Serpent, they are sad and have changed a lot. They understand that their captain and the money are gone, but that their newfound respect for the secrets of the water is a much better prize. The sea splitting to show Captain Oliver's return is a sign that their story will end in a miraculous way. His knowledge and the change in the team lead to a new plan to protect the ocean and its animals. They go from being thieves to being brave protectors and defenders of the world under the sea. They go all over the world to save marine animals, protect coral reefs, and promote marine protection. They have become well-known for their brave defense of the water, which has inspired people and groups all over the world to do the same. Since Captain Oliver and his crew changed the way people think about pirates for good, the world has never been the same. Plundering and being greedy are replaced by brave duty and working together, which reminds people of how important it is to protect and care for the environment. So, their story lives on as a story of daring, bravery, and bold guardianship. It is a lesson that we all have the power to change and the duty to protect the treasures that lie beneath the water. This is how the story starts: A brave pirate captain named Captain Oliver used to live where the sea and the sky meet. Captain Oliver was known all over the world for his constant love of excitement and lack of fear. As he crossed the vast ocean with his loyal crew on the beautiful ship "Sapphire Serpent," his heart was full of the excitement of the unknown, and their eyes sparkled with the promise of secret wealth. The pirate Captain Oliver was not like the others. He went to the sea not only because he wanted to steal and get rich, but also because he was very interested in the world and wanted to learn more about it. His team worked hard because he was interested in how big the ocean was and how many things could happen there. They were more than just sea pirates. They were also explorers, dreamers, and people who thought the world beyond the sky was magical. The tall "Sapphire Serpent" was a sight to see, with its dark blue sails and black hull. It is said that it was made by skilled shipwrights who put their hearts and souls into every plank and nail. Its figurehead was a beautifully carved sapphire snake that seemed to come to life at night and watch over the crew as they went on dangerous journeys. This ship was more than just a way for them to get around. It was also their home and a place of safety in the middle of the vast seas. The crew of Captain Oliver was as different as the sea. People from all walks of life, from crusty old sailors to wide-eyed kids, were attracted to their brave leader's charisma. Everyone has a unique story to tell, made up of hopes, regrets, and dreams from their past. They became close because they all liked to try new things and cared about each other. Their travels took them to some of the world's most remote places, where not many people had gone before. They saw old secrets and fought through fierce storms that put their strength to the test. Captain Oliver was not only good at leading his team, but he was also a good teacher. He taught them how to navigate and the value of trust and friendship. He thinks that the real treasures are not gold or jewelry, but the bonds that people make with each other on their trip. One bad day, as the "Sapphire Serpent" sailed through blue seas, they found an old map that had been lost for a long time. The map was supposed to lead to the "Isle of Eternal Dreams," a place that sailors whispered about. It was said to hold the keys to wealth, knowledge, and living forever. Captain Oliver and his team decided to follow the mysterious symbols on the map. Their hearts were racing, and they were excited. It took them by islands no one had ever seen before, through dangerous rivers, and right into the middle of the angry sea. They ran into problems that put their faith to the test in a way that had never happened before. Despite everything, they kept going because they trusted each other and had a strong will. After months of hard journey, they finally reached the mythical Isle of Eternal Dreams. The island was a green paradise with emerald woods, waterfalls, and strange animals they had never seen before. Following the directions on the map, they went deep into the island's center and found a secret room with old books, sparkling gems, and a sparkling fountain. Captain Oliver was humbled by how big of a find they had made. He understood that the real treasure was not the money in front of him, but the knowledge they had gained, the experiences they had shared, and the strong bond that held his crew together. He knew that the most valuable things in life were the desire to learn and to try new things. As they sailed away from the island, their sails were full, and their spirits were high. They knew that there were many more places to discover and that their journey was not over. Captain Oliver and his team kept exploring the vast ocean, never giving up and always looking for new things to see. They understood that where the sea and the sky met, the most important things were the ones you carried in your heart, not the ones you could hold in your hands. They kept sailing, always looking to the horizon for their next big experience. There are stories and legends about Captain Oliver and his loyal crew that are told all over the seven seas. People from far away told stories about the brave pirate captain who went out to find both worldly and spiritual riches. The "Sapphire Serpent" came to stand for bravery, optimism, and the understanding that life's greatest treasures are not always things. Along the way, they met sailors, traders, and pirates from all over the world. Captain Oliver was true to his nature and tried to avoid bloodshed whenever he could. He thought that people could get along better on the high seas if they understood each other and worked together. Because he was charming and his team was seen as honest explorers, they often made friends in strange places. Over time, the crew of the "Sapphire Serpent" became known for their acts of kindness and bravery. They would help poor coastal towns, save sailors who had been lost, and share their wealth with those who had less. Because Captain Oliver was a caring and understanding leader, every member of his team learned how to be caring and understanding. As word spread about how popular they were, kings and queens asked Captain Oliver to share his knowledge and experience at their courts. He became a trusted advisor to kings and a supporter of keeping peace around the world. His impact went far beyond the coast, and he used it to bring people together and help them understand each other.

Book excerpt: In Sailors and Sexual Identity, author Steven Zeeland talks with young male sailors--both gay- and straight-identified--about ways in which their social and sexual lives have been shaped by their Navy careers. Despite massive media attention to the issue, there remains a gross disparity between the public perception of “gays in the military” and the sexual realities of military life. The conversations in this book reveal how known “gay” and “straight” men can and do get along in the sexually tense confines of barracks and shipboard life once they discover that the imagined boundary between them is not, in fact, a hard line. The stories recounted here in vivid detail call into question the imagined boundaries between gay and straight, homosexual and homosocial, and suggest a secret Pentagon motivation for the gay ban: to protect homoerotic military rituals, buddy love, and covert military homosexuality from the taint of sexual suspicion. Zeeland’s interviews explore many aspects of contemporary life in the Navy including: gay/straight friendship networks the sexual charge to the Navy/Marine Corps rivalry the reality behind sailors’reputations as sexual adventurers in port and at sea men’s differing interpretations of homoerotic military rituals and initiations sex and gender stereotypes associated with military job specialities how sailors view being seen as sex objects Everyone interested in the issue of gays in the military, along with a general gay readership, gay veterans, and gay men for whom sailors represent a sexual ideal, will find Sailors and Sexual Identity an informative and entertaining read. Book excerpt: AWARDED THE ANDERSON MEDAL 2020 Inspired by the recent discovery of mathematically calculated digital plans for a fourth-rate ship by the Deptford master shipwright, John Shish, The Master Shipwright's Secrets is an illustrated history of Restoration shipbuilding focused on the Tyger, one of the smaller but powerful two-deck warships of the period. It examines the proceedings of King Charles II in deciding the types of ship he wanted and his relationship with his master shipwrights. This fascinating book reveals the many secrets of Charles II's shipwrights through an analysis of John Shish's plans for the Tyger, revealing innovative practical calculations which differ significantly from the few contemporary treatises on the subject and the complicated process of constructing the moulds necessary to make the ship's frame. All the other duties performed by the master shipwrights, such as repairing ships, controlling their men and keeping up with the latest inventions are also discussed in detail. The Master Shipwright's Secrets is replete with beautiful and detailed illustrations of the construction of the Tyger and explores both its complicated history and its complex rebuilding, complete with deck plans, internal sections, and large-scale external shaded drawings. The title also explores associated ships, including another fourth-rate ship, the Mordaunt, which was purchased into the Navy at the time and underwent a dimensional survey by John Shish. A rare contemporary section drawing of another fourth-rate English ship and constructional drawings of Shish's later fourth-rate ship, St Albans, are also included.
