Download or read book Triumph Der Sonne written by Wilbur Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Facts in Jingles by : Winifred Sackville Stoner
Download or read book Facts in Jingles written by Winifred Sackville Stoner and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1915 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These jingles were written by a child for children. The young author does not expect that any one will imagine they were intended to be a contribution to poetry or literature. They will be of interest to adults principally as an illustration of the way a child's mind views some of the every-day situations of life. Grown people will also be interested to see how easily a young child can put facts into the jingle form when freedom of expression is acquired early. Those who have read Mrs. Stoner's Natural Education will recall that Winifred learned almost as a babe to use the typewriter. This helped her in her spelling and composition, so that she gained ease and freedom in expressing herself on any topic that she understood. She wrote out everything she learned so that she might the better get a grasp of it and remember it. And she found that when some kinds of facts were put together in a jingle they could be fixed with less effort and retained more securely than if they were learned in the ordinary way-by rote and without any method of organization.

Book Synopsis Artful Immorality – Variants of Cynicism by : Daniel Scott Mayfield
Download or read book Artful Immorality – Variants of Cynicism written by Daniel Scott Mayfield and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a term is overused, it tends to fall out of fashion. Cynicism seems to be an exception. Its polytropic versatility apparently prevents any discontinuation of its application. Everyone knows that cynicism denotes that which is deemed deleterious at a given time; and every time will specify its toxicities – the apparent result being the term’s non-specificity. This study describes the cynical stance and statement so as to render the term’s use scholarly expedient. Close readings of textual sources commonly deemed cynical provide a legible starting point. A rhetorical analysis of aphorisms ascribed to the arch-Cynic Diogenes facilitates describing the design of cynical statements, as well as the characteristic features of the cynical stance. These patterns are identifiable in later texts generally labeled cynical – above all in Machiavelli’s Principe. With recourse to the Diogenical archetype, cynicism is likewise rendered describable in Gracián’s Oráculo manual, Diderot’s Le neveu de Rameau, and Nietzsche’s Posthumous Fragments. This study’s description of cynicism provides a phenomenon otherwise considered amorphous with distinct contours, renders transparent its workings, and tenders a dependable basis for further analyses.
Book Synopsis Strategic Culture Matters by : Wilhelm Mirow
Download or read book Strategic Culture Matters written by Wilhelm Mirow and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the question of why a significant difference in the frequency and intensity with which Great Britain and Germany used military force since 1990 persists despite reunification and the end of the Cold War. Based on the theoretical framework of moderate constructivism, this thesis argues that differences in strategic culture can explain this puzzle. To this end, it analyses opinion polls and military interventions abroad and then compares decision processes and debates leading to military interventions in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan.

Book excerpt: Less than nine hours after his supposed lethal injection, inmate Raymond Phillips wakes to find himself once again behind bars. Only this time, he isn’t in his old penitentiary cell. Cage is the only word for this type of enclosure, and this one looks like it was made for the world’s largest parakeet. Stranger still, a metal collar has been locked around his neck—one that reads "Kaiser." Enter Stefan Hellstrom, a German aristocrat whose absurd wealth allows him to buy anything his little girl, Amelia, desires. And today, he’s surprising her with a new family pet. Of course, like all domesticated animals, it will have to be trained. It will have to be broken. But with the assistance of his loyal butlers, Stefan is confident Kaiser will learn to behave. At the mercy of his new ruthless master, Ray can feel what’s left of his sanity slipping through his fingers. And he knows his humanity won’t be far behind if he can’t figure out a way to escape. Either way, Ray will learn a lesson he will never forget: The only thing worse than being a prisoner…is being a PET.
Book Synopsis (Dis)Obedience in Digital Societies by : Sven Quadflieg
Download or read book (Dis)Obedience in Digital Societies written by Sven Quadflieg and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms are not to be regarded as a technical structure but as a social phenomenon - they embed themselves, currently still very subtle, into our political and social system. Algorithms shape human behavior on various levels: they influence not only the aesthetic reception of the world but also the well-being and social interaction of their users. They act and intervene in a political and social context. As algorithms influence individual behavior in these social and political situations, their power should be the subject of critical discourse - or even lead to active disobedience and to the need for appropriate tools and methods which can be used to break the algorithmic power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when globalization and the advent of the internet have accelerated the spread and diversification of English varieties worldwide, this book provides a constructive assessment of the theoretical models that best account for the development and use of Englishes in the early 21st century. In this endeavor, the present book brings together cutting-edge contributions by leading scholars who explore the notion of linguistic globalization based on a wide range of ESLs, EFLs and ELF, synchronic and diachronic data, different methodological approaches (corpus-based, sociolinguistic, ethnographic), and a variety of data resources (social media, multiplayer online games, journalistic data, GloWbE, Corpus of Historical Singapore English, thematic blogs). Collectively, these studies serve as a springboard for future research on the globalization of Englishes and they contribute to a timely and necessary scholarly conversation on what constitutes adequate theoretical models of World Englishes in the 21st century.

Book Synopsis Linguistic Perspectives on the Construction of Meaning and Knowledge by : Elke Diedrichsen
Download or read book Linguistic Perspectives on the Construction of Meaning and Knowledge written by Elke Diedrichsen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the dimensions of meaning in language from several important perspectives that are of major interest to scholars today, bringing together studies from the realms of linguistic pragmatics, semantics, ontological knowledge engineering, and computational linguistics. Situated within modern functional-cognitive constructional-ontological and computational paradigms, the analyses here are supported by authentic language data, including corpus data, from a rich set of languages. Context and situation play an important but complex role in meaning elaboration. The role of context and situation is elusive and has proved difficult to elucidate with respect to meaning and knowledge representation. This volume provides evidence of the nature of the, often rapid, emergence of meaning in the digital world of the internet, social media, and Internet memes. The use of computational avatars and the rise of human language technologies, including big data and digital corpora, have made the construction of meaning and human language understanding essential to the work of linguists, cognitive scientists and computer scientists who are increasingly working together in collaborative teams to share insights.
