Book Synopsis Man in the Landscape by : Paul Shepard
Download or read book Man in the Landscape written by Paul Shepard and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering exploration of the roots of our attitudes toward nature, Paul Shepard's most seminal work is as challenging and provocative today as when it first appeared in 1967. Man in the Landscape was among the first books of a new genre that has elucidated the ideas, beliefs, and images that lie behind our modern destruction and conservation of the natural world. Departing from the traditional study of land use as a history of technology, this book explores the emergence of modern attitudes in literature, art, and architecture--their evolutionary past and their taproot in European and Mediterranean cultures. With humor and wit, Shepard considers the influence of Christianity on ideas of nature, the absence of an ethic of nature in modern philosophy, and the obsessive themes of dominance and control as elements of the modern mind. In his discussions of the exploration of the American West, the establishment of the first national parks, and the reactions of pioneers to their totally new habitat, he identifies the transport of traditional imagery into new places as a sort of cultural baggage.
Book Synopsis Big Sagebrush by : Bruce Leigh Welch
Download or read book Big Sagebrush written by Bruce Leigh Welch and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail from western Nebraska, through Wyoming and southern Idaho and into eastern Oregon, referred to their travel as an 800 mile journey through a sea of sagebrush, mainly big sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata). Today approximately 50 percent of the sagebrush sea has given way to agriculture, cities and towns, and other human developments. What remains is further fragmented by range management practices, creeping expansion of woodlands, alien weed species, and the historic view that big sagebrush is a worthless plant. Two ideas are promoted in this report: (1) big sagebrush is a nursing mother to a host of organisms that range from microscopic fungi to large mammals, and (2) many range management practices applied to big sagebrush ecosystems are not science based.

Download or read book The Sagebrush Bohemian written by Nigey Lennon and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-06-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people, including literary biographers and other people who should know better, have a persistent image of Mark Twain as a dyspeptic geezer in a white suit, sourly regarding the world from a rocking chair on his New England porch. Not surprisingly, when Nigey Lennon’s groundbreaking biography, "The Sagebrush Bohemian", originally presented its startlingly irreverent revelations about Twain’s formative years, it aroused a firestorm of controversy. Previous Twain biographers had virtually ignored the pivotal period (1861-1869) during which Samuel Clemens migrated to the Western territory; learned the craft of writing in newspaper offices, saloons, and worse places; visited the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands; became a public speaker; adopted (or misappropriated) his famous monicker; and acquired his trademark moustache. Beneath its breezy, eminently readable surface, "The Sagebrush Bohemian" digests acres of primary sources to provide a penetrating, ribald, and hilarious look at the origins of Mark Twain, not to mention the Zeitgeist of the lusty and lawless era that produced him. “[The Sagebrush Bohemian] offers an efficient and lighthearted introduction to the years in which Sam Clemens transformed himself into the writer who made the American language and American irreverence the stuff of literature.” -- The New York Times Book Review “With great good humor, Lennon recounts Twain’s acquisition of a craft lost in his counterparts today...a different look at Samuel Clemens.” -- Booklist “A delight to read.” -- San Francisco Review of Books

Book Synopsis Sagebrush Soldier by : Sherry L. Smith
Download or read book Sagebrush Soldier written by Sherry L. Smith and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2001-05-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sagebrush Soldier is an account of military life during the Indian Wars in the late nineteenth-century West. Private William Earl Smith describes daily camp life, battle scenes, and the behavior of famous men - Ranald Mackenzie and George Crook - in public and private poses. His diary covers the war from the enlisted men’s viewpoint, as he worries about what he will eat and how he will keep warm in freezing conditions, and how he will keep calm when bullied by the sergeant major, of whom he says he would give "five years of my life to [have] walked up to him and smacked him in the nose." To complete the picture of the Sioux War, and particularly the Powder River Expedition, Sherry Smith frames Private Smith’s narrative with contemporary accounts written by other participants in these events. She assembles a balanced, comprehensive history by also incorporating the testimony of officers, their Indian scouts and allies, and their enemy, the Northern Cheyennes. In camp on Christmas Eve, 1876, Smith bought a can of peaches, which cost him two dollars, to share with his bunkmate. Meanwhile, he sees another man give ten dollars for a bottle of whiskey. His own words best convey the feelings of a young man far from home at Christmas: "We had a regular Old Christmas Dinner, a little piece of fat bacon and hard tack and a half cup of coffee. You bet I thought of home now if ever I did. But fate was a gane me and I could not bee there. My Bunkey bought some candy and we ate it." Christmas candy and thoughts of home; some things never change, as readers will learn in this picture of military life unique in its eloquent honesty.
