Book Synopsis The Conciliarist Tradition by : Francis Oakley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early fifteenth century, the general council assembled at Constance and, representing the universal Church, put an end to the scandalous schism which for almost forty years had divided the Latin Church between rival lines of claimants to the papal office. It did so by claiming and exercising an authority superior to that of the pope, an authority by virtue of which it could impose constitutional limits on the exercise of his prerogatives, stand in judgement over him, and if need be, depose him for wrongdoing. In so acting the council gave historic expression to a tradition of conciliarist constitutionalism which long competed for the allegiance of Catholics worldwide with the high papalist monarchical vision that was destined to triumph in 1870 at Vatican I and to become identified with Roman Catholic orthodoxy itself. This book sets out to reconstruct the half-millennial history of that vanquished rival tradition.
Book Synopsis Trent and All That by : John W. O'Malley
Download or read book Trent and All That written by John W. O'Malley and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counter Reformation, Catholic Reformation, the Baroque Age, the Tridentine Age, the Confessional Age: why does Catholicism in the early modern era go by so many names? And what political situations, what religious and cultural prejudices in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries gave rise to this confusion? Taking up these questions, John O'Malley works out a remarkable guide to the intellectual and historical developments behind the concepts of Catholic reform, the Counter Reformation, and, in his felicitous term, Early Modern Catholicism. The result is the single best overview of scholarship on Catholicism in early modern Europe, delivered in a pithy, lucid, and entertaining style. Although its subject is fundamental to virtually all other issues relating to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe, there is no other book like this in any language. More than a historiographical review, Trent and All That makes a compelling case for subsuming the present confusion of terminology under the concept of Early Modern Catholicism. The term indicates clearly what this book so eloquently demonstrates: that Early Modern Catholicism was an aspect of early modern history, which it strongly influenced and by which it was itself in large measure determined. As a reviewer commented, O'Malley's discussion of terminology opens up a different way of conceiving of the whole history of Catholicism between the Reformation and the French Revolution.

Download or read book Conciliarism and Papalism written by J. H. Burns and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-04 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost on the eve of the sixteenth-century Reformation, the long-running debate over the respective authority of popes and councils in the Catholic Church was vigorously resumed. In this collection the editors bring together the first English translation of four major contributions to that debate. In these texts, complex arguments derived from Scripture, theology, and canon law are deployed. The issues that emerge, however, prove to have a broader significance. What is foreshadowed here is the confrontation between 'absolutism' and 'constitutionalism' which was to be a dominant theme in the politics of early-modern Europe and beyond. Even on the threshold of the twenty-first century the concerns that underlie and animate the scholastic disputations in these pages retain their force. This 1997 volume includes introductory material which elucidates the context of the debate, as well as a comprehensive bibliography.

Book Synopsis The Spirit of the Counter-Reformation by : H. Outram Evennett
Download or read book The Spirit of the Counter-Reformation written by H. Outram Evennett and published by . This book was released on 1991-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outram Evennett was a university lecturer in history at Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity College. This book, based on his Birkbeck Lectures of 1951, represents some twenty years' work on the sources of the Counter-Reformation. Evennett did not live to complete his task, but he has provided a remarkable synthesis of the vast European literature on this subject. His method was to isolate the special and positive characteristics of the Counter-Reformation and to account for them in relation to the environment in which they developed. This approach is highly original; it sees in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation an attempt not to check but to extend and come to terms with the more individualistic and modern environment in which the Catholic Church found itself. The Jesuits are treated as agents of this change. Dr John Bossy has edited these lectures for publication and added a Postscript, analysing some of the problems raised in the years since the lectures were delivered. Professor David Knowles pays tribute to Evennett's memory in a Foreword.

Book Synopsis Reformation And Catholicity by : Gustaf Aulén
Download or read book Reformation And Catholicity written by Gustaf Aulén and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1979-05-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reformation was the most profound rupture in the life of Christendom. For this reason it quite naturally becomes an object of special attention in this age of ecumenical endeavors. The point of departure for what is presented here has been the lively debate concerning the Reformation which has been going on in recent times, not least of all the remarkable contributions coming from prominent Roman theologians. The opinions they have presented show features obviously divergent from the stereo-typed controversies of the past. Their estimate of the Reformation is, from some central points of view, entirely positive. -- Preface.

Book Synopsis The Catholic Reformation by : Michael A. Mullett
Download or read book The Catholic Reformation written by Michael A. Mullett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Reformation (1999) provides a dynamic and original history of this crucial movement in early modern Europe. Starting from the late middle ages, it clearly traces the continuous transformation of Catholicism in its structure, bodies and doctrine. Charting the gain in momentum of Catholic renewal from the time of the Council of Trent, it also considers the ambiguous effect of the Protestant Reformation in accelerating the renovation of the Catholic Church. It explores how and why the Catholic Reformation occurred, stressing that many moves towards restoration were underway well before the Protestant Reformation. The huge impact the Catholic renewal had, not only on the papacy, Church leaders and religious ritual and practice, but also on the lives of ordinary people – their culture, arts, attitudes and relationships – is shown in colourful detail.
