Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia a Handbook on Commercial and Industrial Conditions The Russian Empire, possessing a greater area of contiguous terri tory than any other country m the world, 18 still m a comparatively early stage of commercial development, although the foreign com merce of European Russia alone, including Finland, amounted to more than $1, 261 000 000 in 1912. The possibilities of trade in this vast territory are little known to the great mass of business men in the United States, and it is with the object of giving a general view of economic conditions in that country that this monograph has been prepared. The total area of Russia, both in Europe and Asia, is square miles, or one-seventh of the land area of the globe, while its population in 1911 was only or about 20 per square mile. This 18 a smaller number of inhabitants ln proportion to its territory than 1s possessed by the United States, where there are 32. 08 persons for each square mile, while Germany has a density of population of 310. 96 to the square mile, France has to the square mile, Austria Hungary 195. 78 to the square mile, and Sweden to the square mile. In fact the Russian Empire as a whole IS only slightly more thickly settled than Norway and Mexico, which average and 19. 7 inhabitants per square mile respectively. In per cent of the population Of European Russia proper per cent of the population of Russian Poland, 12. 9 per cent of the population of the Caucasus 11 per cent of that Of Siberia, 13. 5 per cent Of the population Of entral Asia, and 14. 6 per cent of the population of Finland lived in towns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1999, Russia's economy was growing at almost 7% per year, and by 2008 reached 11th place in the world GDP rankings. Russia is now the world's second largest producer and exporter of oil, the largest producer and exporter of natural gas, and as a result has the third largest stock of foreign exchange reserves in the world, behind only China and Japan. But while this impressive economic growth has raised the average standard of living and put a number of wealthy Russians on the Forbes billionaires list, it has failed to solve the country's deep economic and social problems inherited from the Soviet times. Russia continues to suffer from a distorted economic structure, with its low labor productivity, heavy reliance on natural resource extraction, low life expectancy, high income inequality, and weak institutions. While a voluminous amount of literature has studied various individual aspects of the Russian economy, in the West there has been no comprehensive and systematic analysis of the socialist legacies, the current state, and future prospects of the Russian economy gathered in one book. The Oxford Handbook of the Russian Economy fills this gap by offering a broad range of topics written by the best Western and Russian scholars of the Russian economy. While the book's focus is the current state of the Russian economy, the first part of the book also addresses the legacy of the Soviet command economy and offers an analysis of institutional aspects of Russia's economic development over the last decade. The second part covers the most important sectors of the economy. The third part examines the economic challenges created by the gigantic magnitude of regional, geographic, ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity of Russia. The fourth part covers various social issues, including health, education, and demographic challenges. It will also examine broad policy challenges, including the tax system, rule of law, as well as corruption and the underground economy. Michael Alexeev and Shlomo Weber provide for the first time in one volume a complete, well-rounded, and essential look at the complex, emerging Russian economy.

'we have arrived at one of the most critical turning-points in Russian history, but present events are the crisis of a long and dramatic story. Without an acquaintance with the beginning of the chapter which is now in progress, we cannot hope to understand the end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Putin's Labor Dilemma, Stephen Crowley investigates how the fear of labor protest has inhibited substantial economic transformation in Russia. Putin boasts he has the backing of workers in the country's industrial heartland, but as economic growth slows in Russia, reviving the economy will require restructuring the country's industrial landscape. At the same time, doing so threatens to generate protest and instability from a key regime constituency. However, continuing to prop up Russia's Soviet-era workplaces, writes Crowley, could lead to declining wages and economic stagnation, threatening protest and instability. Crowley explores the dynamics of a Russian labor market that generally avoids mass unemployment, the potentially explosive role of Russia's monotowns, conflicts generated by massive downsizing in "Russia's Detroit" (Tol'yatti), and the rapid politicization of the truck drivers movement. Labor protests currently show little sign of threatening Putin's hold on power, but the manner in which they are being conducted point to substantial chronic problems that will be difficult to resolve. Putin's Labor Dilemma demonstrates that the Russian economy must either find new sources of economic growth or face stagnation. Either scenario—market reforms or economic stagnation—raises the possibility, even probability, of destabilizing social unrest.

Book excerpt: The Marquis de Custine's unique perspective on a vast, fascinating country in the grip of oppressive tyranny In 1839, encouraged by his friend Balzac, Custine set out to explore Russia. His impressions turned into what is perhaps the greatest and most influential of all books about Russia under the Tsars. Rich in anecdotes as much about the court of Tsar Nicholas as the streets of St Petersburg, Custine is as brilliant writing about the Kremlin as he is about the great northern landscapes. An immediate bestseller on publication, Custine's book is also a central book for any discussion of 19th century history, as - like de Tocqueville's Democracy in America - it dramatizes far broader questions about the nature of government and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greater Russia the Continental Empire, of the Old World Many books have been written on Russia and its people. The reason that the number is again increased is due to the fact that Russia is developing more rapidly than any other nation, and that Siberia is very different from the inert, barren, dismal country conventionally described. The outward changes are numerous and easily recognised by one who remembers Russia as it was under the rule of Alexander II., the Great Tsar Liberator. Nor is it difficult to describe the altered conditions, and explain some of the processes by which the transformation has been effected. There has been a great awakening of Russia. The people, debarred generally from active participation in politics, have directed their energies towards the commercial and industrial exploitation of their native land. They are active, strenuous, and persevering; they have advanced in civilisation as well as increased their wealth and power. By territorial expansion Russia has taken a long stride forward towards the attainment of world supremacy, and boasts that the step is but the beginning of her progress towards the realisation of her manifest destiny. This is the greater Russia to which the attention of the reader is invited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
