Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 3.0, , course: Public Health, language: English, abstract: Information is inevitable in the health profession. The need to become informed and knowledgeable which leads to “information seeking behaviour processes” is important among qualified health workers who have vital roles in achieving health goals of a given country. The purpose of this study was to investigate the health information seeking behaviour of rural health workers in Karonga, Malawi. Specifically, the study determined the health information needs; awareness of health information sources; ascertained the health information sources consulted; the benefits of consulting health information sources; and establish the challenges faced by rural health workers in accessing. The study used a cross-sectional study design employing quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used to select a study sample of 50 health workers to participate in the study. The collected data was analysed descriptively using IBM SPSS version 20. Results showed that almost all study participants (96%) had an information need. Their needs included updates on new health issues, need to provide quality of service and need to upgrade knowledge. The study found that majority of rural health workers 46(92%) were aware of information sources. The study also revealed that the major information sources accessed by rural health workers were both print and electronic sources which included reference materials, text books, and online databases among others. The study also showed that the majority (52%) of respondent’s preferred accessing health information at their respective hospital offices. The sampled health workers cited lack of hospital libraries, funding, inadequate and poor ICT facilities, and outdated health information resources as major challenges. From the findings, it is evident that health information seeking behaviour is poor. Therefore, the study recommends that there should be supportive policies, improved ICT infrastructure, increased funding and advocacy for development of libraries in rural health facilities. .

Download or read book The State of World Rural Poverty written by Idriss Jazairy and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite almost four decades and billions of dollars in development activities, we are barely in a position to track the changing dynamics of poverty or to define with conviction the processes that entrap the poor in their misery. Accounting for about 90% of global poverty, rural poverty, through transmigration, is also a main contributor to urban poverty. It is in the rural areas of the world where poverty is most severe in human terms, where the hunger, hopelessness, hardship, and despair commonly associated with entrenched poverty are most pronounced, where basic health services, sanitation, educational opportunities, and other common amenities are most lacking. The alleviation of rural poverty is therefore tantamount to the alleviation of global poverty in its entirety. The State of World Rural Poverty offers the first comprehensive look at the economic conditions and prospects of the world's rural poor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Iliffe's 1998 book is a history of the African medical profession in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from the earliest training of modern medical staff in the 1870s to the present day. Based on extensive research, and dealing exclusively with African doctors, it offers an understanding of professionalisation in the Third World. It describes the recruitment and education of doctors, their understanding and practice of modern medicine, the struggle for international recognition of their qualifications and efforts to develop East African medical systems after independence, and their experiences during a period of political and economic difficulty. The book ends with an account of the significant work of East African doctors in the study and control of AIDS. This is a major contribution to the social history of Africa and to the social history of medicine more broadly.
Book Synopsis Labour and Poverty in Rural Tanzania by : Paul Collier
Download or read book Labour and Poverty in Rural Tanzania written by Paul Collier and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural Tanzania, one of the poorest areas of the world, has been the arena for bold social and economic official experiments which have commanded world attention. Yet, because of the lack of data, these experiments have never been properly assessed. This book, based upon large scale surveys designed and conducted by the authors, first describes how the representative houeshold is diversified over a range of economic activities including migration, then identifies and measures inequality using an advanced approach to the measurement of living standards and finally shows the extent to which inequality exists within as opposed to between villages. The study also investigates the impact of government initiative such as cooperative farms, land reform, education and health services and shows how some have had effects which run counter to their declared objectives. This book will be of particular interest to development economists.
