Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The causes of the teacher shortage are complex; however, the retention of special education teachers is a significant contributor to this shortage. Some research has indicated that up to 9.3 % of special education teachers leave the field at the end of their first year of teaching and 7.4 % move to general education yearly. Therefore, school districts face a continuous cycle of recruitment, hiring, and induction. Because of the pivotal value of retention, school districts and site level education leaders must take proactive steps to reduce the retention rate. The research on teacher retention indicates factors such as salary, support; mentoring, responsive induction programs, deliberate role design, positive work conditions, and professional development positively affect retention. This mixed methods was an examination of data from the 2007-Georgia Teacher Survey (Department of Research and Evaluation at the Georgia Professional Standards Commission) to establish a link between mentoring, job satisfaction, and the retention of special education teachers. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the influence of mentoring and job satisfaction on the outcome variable of interest, teacher retention. A sociocultural frame work was used draw the following conclusions: mentoring is most effective when it provides opportunities in the learning community for mentors and mentees to meet and share ideas with colleagues in a similar content area; relationships and support is the ultimate determining factor regarding intent; mentoring and job satisfaction can impact the intent to remain in the profession based on race, gender, and number of years teaching, for special education teachers.

Major findings include factors that positively influence retention of special education teachers within the one rural Arkansas school district: small scale of district, administration support, student rapport, positive school culture, extended family living in the local area, and the supportive culture of the rural community.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study is to identify those factors contributing to special education teacher (SET) turnover that can be directly amendable to intervention by the improved policy and practice at school sites. This study examines the turnover behavior of SETs by including variables clustered as teacher demographics, employment factors, and teacher perceptions of organizational conditions. The responses of SET stayers (teachers who remain on their school from the base year to year two of the survey), movers (teachers who moved from one school to another), and leavers (teachers who left the teaching profession) were compared to general education teachers (GET) in the same groups to identify variables that separated the subgroups. The data for this research are the teacher reports contained in the Teacher Follow-up Survey (TFS) 2000-2001. This survey is the complement to the Public and Private School Teacher Questionnaire of the School and Staffing Survey (SASS, 1999-2000). These surveys are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and were conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. They were analyzed by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES). The teacher samples are weighted to produce national estimates. The sample of this study is 4,048 SETs and GETs (N = 4,080 weighted). This study is unique to others whose focus is SET turnover in that it examines the distinct roles of elementary and secondary SETs. The school levels differ in school organization, academic rigor, and special education law. This study found that these differences appear to have an impact on retention behavior. This study provides additional information to the current literature available to policymakers and administration regarding teacher retention to aid in the development of retention strategies that are SET specific.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine career and technical education teachers' perceptions of the factors that lead to the success of special education students who participate in career and technical programs in four schools in southeastern Pennsylvania. This study researched teachers' perceptions regarding the needs of special education students, the factors that influence student success and teachers' perceptions regarding ongoing training and professional development in special education. One-hundred and six participants were invited to participate in an online survey. Fifty-five participants began the survey, 54 responded to the first survey question by consenting to participate in the study, and 53 participants completed the demographic questions. Of the 55 participants that opened the study on SurveyMonkey, 51 completed the Likert scale questions and 48 completed the open-ended questions. Out of the 48 participants that completed the online survey, nine were interviewed. This study revealed that career and technical educators perceived that special education students need teachers to have access to their IEPs and be able to implement accommodations with appropriate and available resources, with paraprofessionals as one of the key resources. Data collected from the online survey and teacher interview support the perception that the factors that contribute to the success of special education students are the teachers' understanding of, and ability to make, accommodations listed in the students' IEPs, student motivation, and having a school philosophy that believes that all students can succeed. Teacher support for further professional development in special education was also indicated.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored teacher perceptions of disproportionality in special education referrals in relation to race and gender and teacher preparedness to make referrals to special education services. This study was conducted at three Pennsylvania school districts. Two districts were considered rural/suburban, while one district was identified as suburban. Participants were 36 elementary, middle, and high school general education teachers who responded to a researcher-designed electronic survey consisting of multiple-response, Likert scale, and open-ended questions. In addition, three respondents participated in individual interviews with the researcher. The findings of this study indicate that general education teachers have variable responses to how race, gender, and their own preparedness influence referrals of students to special education services. Data showed a need for training for both inservice and preservice teachers in bias in order to allow for an understanding of factors that can influence referral rates of students to special education services. Data also indicated a need for educating all professional instructional staff in disproportionality and whether or not it occurs within their district. Finally, findings revealed the need for teacher preparation and teacher inservice programs to have a heavier emphasis on training educators to work with students with disabilities.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined teachers' perceptions of self-efficacy and its effects upon job performance, job satisfaction, and variables that affect job retention. The study site was a special education center located in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. Participants included 32 special education teachers who were employed at the selected site. Participants completed three surveys, the Educators Demographic Data Sheet, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey, and the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale. In addition, 17 of the participants were individually interviewed and observations were conducted throughout the site during a two-week period. Results of this study indicate a relationship between perceived self-efficacy and job performance, job satisfaction, and variables that affect job retention. It was found that, although the participants felt themselves to be efficacious in classroom management, student engagement, and instruction strategies, they perceived an overall lack of efficacy in completing all the duties of their job due to an abundance of paperwork and lack of time. Results indicate that these low feelings of efficacy are perceived to have a negative impact upon job performance and satisfaction. Conversely, the participants perceived feelings of efficacy in areas that relate to job retention.
