Book excerpt: The collection of pedagogical maxims entitled Musikalische Haus-und Leben Regeln (Home and Life Rules for Musicians) is one of the most popular literary works of Robert Schumann. The rules were written in the last period of his life and contain Schumann's most important pedagogical ideas for young musicians. Initially, the author intended to place these notes between the pieces in his Album fur die Jugend (Album for the Young), op. 68. Later, however, this plan was abandoned and the work was published separately, in a special annex to Leipzig's Neue Musikmagazin (New Music Magazine). The educational value of Schumann's book consists not only in the practical advice on how to achieve technical mastery, but also in the idea, constantly emphasized throughout the book, that music must embody virtue and always serve a greater purpose. In English, Russian and French."

Book excerpt: The great composer’s “superb” advice on playing, practicing, composing, and being a musician, with additional comments by renowned cellist Steven Isserlis (Times Literary Supplement). If everybody were to play first violin, we could not have an orchestra. Originally published in1850, Advice to Young Musicians: Musical Rules for Home and in Life offered composer Robert Schumann’s combination of practical advice and poetic words of wisdom for young people beginning their musical education. Presented in aphorisms and short paragraphs, the book’s insights remain as valuable today as when they were written. Recognizing the continued resonance of Schumann’s words, world-renowned cellist Steven Isserlis, himself a writer of children’s books and many articles for young musicians, set out to rescue the work from history. Here, he revisits Schumann’s work and contributes his own contemporary counsel for musicians and music lovers. For this edition, Isserlis retranslated Schumann’s text and arranged it into four thematic sections: “On being a musician,” “Playing,” “Practicing,” and “Composing.” Each page is decoratively designed, and accompanying Schumann’s original quotations are Isserlis’s thoughtful and often humorous glosses. The book concludes with Isserlis’s own reflections on his life as a musician and performer: “My Own Bits of Advice (For What They’re Worth).” The result is a unique and thought-provoking book that will be treasured by aspiring musicians of any age.

This lively, accessible book helps young people cope with the difficulties involved in learning a new instrument and remaining dedicated to playing and practicing. Teens from renowned music programs - including the Juilliard School's Pre-College Program and Boston University's Tanglewood Institute - join pro musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Paula Robison, and James Galway in offering practical answers to questions from what instrument to play to where the musical road may lead. In this revised and expanded edition, Amy Nathan has updated the book to address today's more technologically-minded young musician. Expanded sections cover the various ways students can use technology to assist in mastering an instrument and in making practice time more productive, from using the Internet to download pieces to be learned and playing along with downloaded tunes to practicing with computer-based practice programs, CDs, and videos/DVDs of musical performances. She also addresses concerns of young composers and conductors, two groups not mentioned in the original edition. The book's updated Resource Guide suggests where to get additional help, both online and off.

Book excerpt: Presented here in English and the original German, here is the timeless, charming, crucial little book of wisdom, wonderful quotes and advice on what it really means to be a musician. The great Romantic composer Robert Schumann wrote this book as an inspiration to his own young children. The precepts in this book will inform, amuse, and inspire musicians of all ages.Robert Schumann, sometimes known as Robert Alexander Schumann, (8 June 1810 - 29 July 1856) was a German composer, aesthete and influential music critic. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most representative composers of the Romantic era. Schumann left the study of law to return to music, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He had been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury caused by a device he created to develop the strength and independence of his fingers ended this dream. One of the most promising careers as a pianist had thus come to an end. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing.Schumann's published compositions were written exclusively for the piano until 1840; he later composed works for piano and orchestra; many lieder (songs for voice and piano); four symphonies; an opera; and other orchestral, choral, and chamber works. His writings about music appeared mostly in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (New Journal for Music), a Leipzig-based publication which he jointly founded. In 1840, Schumann married pianist Clara Wieck, daughter of his former teacher, when she legally came of age at 21. They no longer needed her father's consent, which had been the subject of a long and acrimonious legal battle. Clara also composed music and had a considerable concert career.(cover photograph courtesy of Alessandra Lobo)

But it can be hard to get started...and sometimes even harder to know when to stop. "The Young Musician's Guide to Songwriting" is an ideal resource, designed specifically for guiding the young musician through the songwriting process-from idea generation to completed song. Whether you're a beginning or advanced musician, author and musician Lisa Donovan Lukas compiles her years of experience teaching and working in the music industry to provide exercises that help the songwriter get started quickly; lessons on structure, lyrics, melody, harmony, and rhythm; and perhaps most importantly-the discovery and development of a good song idea. So grab your instrument (and maybe your teacher), and crack open this book to unlock the gates to your own musical journey.
