Nonso quickly immerses himself in university life, becomes acquainted with his roommatesTony, Max, and Tunde, and starts a sizzling love affair with Sandra, a fellow student. But when Nonso is attacked by two frat men one night, he begins a quest for protection that, with Tonys help, leads him to join a secret cult. After he is exposed to violent acts that threaten the university and his own life, Nonso journeys through evil where he learns what he is capable of as he becomes active in politics, finds self-confidence, and discovers that there are consequences for every choice in life. Book excerpt: When "Queasy" Morgan, a shady nightclub owner, tries to put the screws on an old people's home, he gets a lot more than he bargained for. Helped by Charlie and Tiny, two of his henchmen with misgivings, the residents retaliate. But Morgan's problems don't end there. When his parrot falls ill - he blames the residents - he's forced to travel overland to the central African republic of Madoqualand for a cure. En route he almost causes a diplomatic incident in Paris, risks a charge of indecent exposure in Turkey, and struggles with a water phobia. To cap it all, an over-sexed game ranger gets the hots for the poor man when he arrives at her isolated ranger station. Zany and fast moving, RUFFLED FEATHERS presents an alternative snapshot of residential care in the 21st century. But will Morgan return home safely? And what does his parrot think about it all?

Book excerpt: Meet the inspiring woman whose love of fashion led her to start a conservation movement and found the Massachusetts Audubon Society in this lively picture book biography. Harriet Lawrence Hemenway loved hats. She loved them with ribbons and flowers, embroidery and pearls. And feathers! What was better than a hat with grand, glorious feathers? But then Harriet discovered that millions of birds died so that she and her friends could soar at the height of style. A passion for fashion was one thing, but this was feather-brained! So Harriet led the charge to take feathers out of fashion, getting laws passed that made it illegal to buy or sell wild bird feathers. In 1896, she and her fellow bird protectors founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society, which grew into a national organization that still protects birds today! Additional information about conservation can be found in the backmatter of this engaging picture book.

In Broken Beak Woods, it is illegal to fly above your ability. In fact, it is a crime punishable by clipping, the grisly punishment of losing the ability to fly. Not only was Mallard flying higher than he should, but he was also flying faster than he was allowed. He was up showing his friend Rifleman the sunrise from 30,000 feet. And now, over the next two days he desperately needs the help of his lawyer Mr. Crow, who has never lost a case before. But Parliament and the courts have become more sinister and stricter against any infractions. And for just wanting to improve himself and to become greater than just the simple duck he is, Mallard will require more courage and more resolve than he has ever found within to stand up against Parliament and its archaic ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A symposium held in 1973 chaired and organized by William R. Dawson was the first major attempt to summarize and synthesize the existing information in the then emerging field of avian energetics. The symposium featured papers by James R. King, William A. Calder III, Vance A. Tucker, and Robert E. Ricklefs and com mentaries by George A. Bartholomew, S. Charles Kendeigh, and Eugene P. Odum. The proceedings of the symposium, Avian Energetics (Paynter 1974), played a critical role in stimulating interest and research in the field of avian energetics. Some twenty-odd years later, we are making another attempt to summarize the information in the field of avian energetics. Some obvious differences exist be tween its predecessor and this volume. Numerous improvements in methodology, such as the use of doubly labeled water to estimate metabolism in free-living birds, now allow researchers to ask questions that could not be addressed previ ously. Second, consideration of nutrition is now inseparable from that of energet ics. This merger is necessary not only because food intake is the source of both en ergy and nutrients but also because one or more nutrients, rather than energy, can be limiting for a given species in a particular instance. Finally, the study of ener getics and nutritional ecology, particularly in birds and mammals, has grown so dramatically that a single volume can now only partially cover the range of possi ble topics and can catalogue only a sampling of all the studies on the subject.
