Download or read book An Evaluation of Asphalt-rubber Mixtures for Use in Pavement Systems written by Dale S. Decker and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of airfield pavements have not been developed sufficiently to provide pavements that will not crack. Cracking is a response to traffic and environmental conditions or to the construction material. For many years, rubber in several different forms has been added to asphalt with limited success in reducing pavement cracking. This report reviews the efforts to control cracking by incorporating rubber and asphalt for application as membrane interlayers, surface seal coats, crack fillers, and joint sealers. The extensive literature review indicates that conflicting conclusions have been reached regarding varied applications of the asphalt-rubber material. Of the asphalt-rubber products available, those with high percentages of rubber (20 to 30 percent by weight) appear to be the most promising for airfield pavements, although the effectiveness of asphalt-rubber in controlling or reducing pavement cracking has not been conclusively demonstrated. No superiority of one asphalt-rubber product was indicated in the literature. Because of the danger of loose aggregate chips, the literature indicates that chip seal applications should not be used on facilities where loose chips could be a problem. Therefore, the membrane interlayer is the only application of asphalt-rubber that should be considered for military runways at this time.

Download or read book Chip Seal Best Practices written by Douglas D. Gransberg and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 342: Chip Seal Best Practices examines ways to assist in the development and implementation of pavement preservation programs by identifying the benefits of using chip seal as part of a preventive maintenance program and by highlighting advanced chip seal programs in use around the world. The report includes approximately 40 best practices in the areas of chip seal design methods, contract administration, equipment practices, construction practices, and performance measures. According to the report, the increased use of chip seals for maintenance can be a successful, cost-effective way of using preventive maintenance to preserve both low-volume and higher-volume pavements.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Synopsis Eco-efficient Pavement Construction Materials by : Fernando Pacheco-Torgal
Download or read book Eco-efficient Pavement Construction Materials written by Fernando Pacheco-Torgal and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eco-efficient Pavement Construction Materials acquaints engineers with research findings on new eco-efficient pavement materials and how they can be incorporated into future pavements. Divided into three distinctive parts, the book emphasizes current research topics such as pavements with recycled waste, pavements for climate change mitigation, self-healing pavements, and pavements with energy harvesting potential. Part One considers techniques for recycling, Part Two reviews the contribution of pavements for climate change mitigation, including cool pavements, the development of new coatings for high albedo targets, and the design of pervious pavements. Finally, Part Three focuses on self-healing pavements, addressing novel materials and design and performance. Finally, the book discusses the case of pavements with energy harvesting potential, addressing different technologies on this field. Offers a clear and concise lifecycle assessment of asphalt pavement recycling for greenhouse gas emission with temporal aspects Applies key research trends to green the pavement industry Includes techniques for recycling waste materials, the design of cool pavements, self-healing mechanisms, and key steps in energy harvesting
