Book excerpt: This NAO report examines the management of the eight Royal Parks in London (St James's Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park (with Primrose Hill), Greenwich Park, Richmond Park and Bushy Park) by the Royal Parks agency, an executive agency of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The parks attract millions of visitors each year and encompass over 5,000 acres of land with 280 buildings, statues and memorials, and over 100 miles of roads and paths. The report considers how the Agency is managing and developing the Parks and its resources, in order to meet the needs of current and future users. Findings include that, in order to build on recent progress made, the Agency should continue to develop its core plans for promoting greater access to the Parks and strengthening the way it manages income generating activities. It has improved its management capacity at senior levels by bringing in external expertise, and can learn more by benchmarking its performance against other parks, both at home and abroad, for example, by participating in the Green Flag Awards Scheme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London's royal parks are amongst its most beautiful and beloved spaces: just as much as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and Victoria Station, the mere mention of Hyde or Regent's Park is enough to evoke the capital in all its glory for residents and tourists alike. They have a grand history – some having been royally-owned as far back as the Norman conquest, and others having been acquired by Henry VIII during the Reformation – and since being opened to the public during the eighteenth century have hosted some of London's great events, including the Great Exhibition and innumerable jubilees and celebrations. This book tells the story of all nine of the parks from the point when they were acquired by the monarchy until the present day, including the major historic moments and events with which they are associated.

Book excerpt: Great City Parks is a celebration of some of the finest achievements of landscape architecture in the public realm. It is a comparative study of twenty significant public parks in fourteen major cities across Western Europe and North America. Collectively, they give a clear picture of why parks have been created, how they have been designed, how they are managed, and what plans are being made for them at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Based on unique research including extensive site visits and interviews with the managing organisations, this book is illustrated throughout with clear plans and professional photographs for each park. This book reflects a belief that well-planned, well-designed and well-managed parks remain invaluable components of liveable and hospitable cities.
